2" more of rain today. Rain and low 80's in the 10 day forecast. 60% of our corn is currently pollinating. With any luck, we I-Staters may just push corn into the $2's by harvest.
Hey

, does this have enough value to leave boxed up or should I let the kids have it? I've had it since I was a kid, but have no real attachment since we ran red stuff.
This WD has sat here with a seized engine since 1983. Mom says the barn is coming down this summer. So the question is, do I sell it or stash it in another barn and tell another generation that someday we'll fix it up?
My business and the family farm are in no way financially connected. But it's getting harder to explain to my driver why he has a 25 year old former Wal-Mart truck when my cousin has this sitting at the farm lol.
Truck driver called because his truck is intermittently running rough and asked me to check with the mechanic. I call him, tell him the symptoms.
Mech: Add a gallon of coolant.
Me: Why?
Mech: You have an International, don't ask why.

Is there anything better than getting back to the house from the fields before the kids are in bed and there is a hot plate of food on the counter?

In 1925 the guy who lived in our house was arrested for making moonshine in the woods. This is currently my favorite story about our 180 year old house.
I'm beginning to think the family sweet corn patch is less about raising money for the kids college funds and more about having an excuse to hang out and drink beer with my cousins.

I learned to drive truck in this old Transtar that Grandpa bought new. I hate to see it rot away in the weeds, but at the same time, none of us ever want to drive it again.
It's been been great to learn so many people love our old house. So I thought I'd share a drawing of our house from 1879. Alfred White built not only his house from bricks fired on the farm, but many others in our area too.
Why do politicians always try to show that they're pro 2nd ammendment outdoorsmen with pictures of bird hunting in enough orange to glow in the dark, and never groundhogs from moving pickup with an AR-15?
It's bath night in the Marlatt household. Which means child

refuses to finish dinner because he doesn't want a bath and child
#2
refuses to eat dinner because she wants a bath NOW!
Upon review of the last year, I've come to 3 conclusions.
1. During riots I prefer the destruction of public property vs private.
2. I want to live in a Republic where frustrated citizens can storm the capitol.
3. Storming the capitol because Biden "stole" the election is stupid.
We thought it would be a good idea to raise our children without night lights. Now we play a fun game where Max shuts off every light in the house and stalks us in the dark. Parenting is wild.
I got a text from our minister today. He complemented me on my sprint across the sanctuary to catch Max before he grabbed a handbell during Easter worship. It feels nice to have my efforts noticed.
Congratulations to Mrs. Lisa Bare on her retirement after 18 years in education! She has done amazing work with our PHAF program! She plans to spend more time with her husband: Michael, her son: Ben, her daughter & son-in-law: Amy & Brian Marlatt, & her grandson: Max Marlatt!
The hydraulic oil leak/AC repair on my 255 has been deemed a "winter" project. So the cover crop seeder got upgraded to the 290 my cousin plants corn with. This is not good, crop budgets say I cannot afford get used to this lol.
@plotner_mike
I could get behind a constitutional amendment banning the all President's immediate family from nation office for at least a generation. Spouse, children, siblings, nieces, nephews.
Some family friends gave Max a Fisher-Price nativity scene. Last I saw, the baby Jesus, Mary, and an Angel were riding around the house in a dump truck.

1st Choice Seeds is excited to sponsor Hill Grove Pulling Sleds!
Nathan Delay, our Logistics Specialist, is pictured with his pulling sled at the 75th Annual Steam Engine Show in Rushville this past weekend.
Picked up this mill/drill this evening. Even though it's going to be mostly used as a drill press, I'm excited to try out some milling. This is probably the closest thing I have to a hobby.
Got this little 28 applicator to the field yesterday. Won't do many acres with it, but it will be great for plots, sweet corn, and using up extra starter. Plus it's oddly enjoyable to sidedress without a cab.
Before I voted today I went through my text messages to make a list of all the candidates that have been spamming my inbox. Just to be sure I didn't vote for any of those jerks.
My 36 year old bachelor cousin is in Gatlinburg for NYE with a girlfriend nobody knew about until Christmas. The family gossip calls/text are running wild. Happy New Years!
My 3 year old: Daddy, are you a farmer?
Me: Yes
Her: Then why don't you have any cows or pigs?
Me: Ummm, I'm not that kind of farmer.
Her: (scowling) Maybe you should be.
One week out from the field day. Our to do list is getting shorter.
The plot looks great. The ice cream truck is booked. The drone operator for the cover crop demo is booked. All I have left to do is clean the shop.
August & September are busy months with farm shows & field days. We hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!

My wife: "We should get the kids blocks so they can learn to build things"
Also my wife: "WHY ARE THERE BLOCKS ALL OVER THE GOD DAMN HOUSE?"

I think the best way to communicate that a change in ownership doesn't mean a major change in the business is to announce it a year after it happened. Amy and I are excited and blessed to be leading an employee owned and family focused team.
@drich82
Personally I hope so. I'd rather have a fleet of 2-3 row autonomous equipment than autonomous equipment of our current size. Less compaction, no overwidth when moving, less downtime because they won't all be down at once and less initial cost with smaller units.
In '06, I bought a brand new Chevy 2500 4x4, manual trans, manual windows/locks, rubber floors, long bed for $21,000 cash out the door. How times have changed.
Sitting in the ER watching Dad get his forehead get stitched up. He tripped and hit his head while getting the dryer going. Keep a watchful eye on your old folks this harvest season.

Mentally preparing myself to spend 30 minutes getting my kids dressed up warm so that they can spend 10 minutes in the snow and we can spend an hour undressing them, giving them showers and starting the laundry
