Microsoft has begun rolling out a major update to the Weather app. Don't worry, your favorite ads are still there! Better yet, you'll now get even more!

@archer_uwu @______imher eh. you can make long spammy normal messages too, so just treat it exactly as such in that case. what's probably more of an issue is if moderation bots (not automod -- not affected) can't pick up on poll messages due to it not even being available through the public api.

genuinely. this is like getting a very cheap android phone that sounds promising in specs but only because the oem is making a loss and so they compensate for that with ads throughout the os and/or a lot of bloatware from companies they signed agreements with.

note: there were already ads there. like auto-installing or placing (placeholder) apps with companies microsoft has agreements with, in hopes that users would use those promoted apps. it sounds like they're wanting to push it further.

@iicctwtysy officially, you'd have to pay for the license from microsoft or included in the price of a desktop or laptop with windows preinstalled. semi-officially, higher ups at microsoft support can run that one popular tool to activate windows. regardless, it's the same experience. 🙂

@ZacheryDew I noticed way back then. It’s just insanely worse since Windows 10 and especially 11. Heck, some of their own Edge & Bing nags have come and gone (i.e. searching a browser on windows search used to keep bringing up the Edge nag).

@xanzuls officially, it would be intended to buy the product key. even for windows 11. the upgrade was free because the ‘purchaser’ of the computer (like a laptop) essentially paid for windows as part of the price (windows 7 or later).

iirc this sort of issue started with one windows 8(.1?) update. there was a command that could be used to set the default bootloader back to the grub (efi file) one.. because yes, grub is still technically there. however...

@ZacheryDew Edge being a good or bad browser isn’t really relevant. Their nags have been heavily invasive (to the point where some were eventually removed). This goes for Bing too. And their shoving of Copilot.

in light of discord trying to make it more impractical to use their cdn as a file host: don't use discord's can as a file host. that aside, they historically deleted files even if the posts are up and link to the content (incl. images), and the cdn [sub-]domain tends to change.

@VitoGesualdi You are correct in regards to what the software does. It captures any login credentials it can find in Chrome and Firefox (using SQLite to access the cookie files), organises the data, sends them off and cleans up. Plus more.
