Fascinating article from Brendan O'Leary and John Garry on 'losers consent', focussing on potential future Irish unification referendums. There is some confusion and debate around this term and this article provides really valuable insight.
@PSA_IrishPol
This is a fantastically clear and concise unpacking of a complicated feature of the Windsor Framework by
@DPhinnemore
. The 'Stormont Brake' provisions are in play for the first time as of last week. Everyone in the UK and Ireland should take note.

📢 New report!
@alanjrenwick
and I have just released a new
@ConUnit_UCL
report: 'Perspectives on the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement: Examining Diverse Views, 1998–2023'. 📚
Thank you to everyone who has shared the report this morning. It is quite a hefty document (over 130 pages long). If anyone wants a quick lunchtime overview,
@alanjrenwick
and I also wrote a
@ConUnit_UCL
blog covering the main findings.
Counting is finished in
#GE2020
. It ends with:
Fianna Fáil - 38 (including ceann comhairle)
Sinn Féin - 37 (with a larger popular vote)
If (and it's still an 'if') they can agree to form a coalition, the debate over who will be Taoiseach is going to be front and centre.
Talks at Hillsborough continue but a restoration of the Assembly & Executive before Christmas is unlikely. If people want a refresher (particularly those watching from GB and further afield), my report with
@alanjrenwick
examines many of the key issues
Thanks to everyone who shared my article with

1) I have a new article out with my
@ConUnit_UCL
colleague
@AlanWhysallNI
in the latest edition of
@fortnight50
'The recent restoration of the institutions at Stormont is cause for cautious celebration but not for closing down the conversation on reform'
3) It is also my first journal publication! Thanks to
@alanjrenwick
, the Working Group, and the team at the
@ConUnit_UCL
for creating such an incredible working environment.
Great to see Prof Brendan O’Leary further outline the meaning of “losers consent” which has been fundamentally misunderstood on Twitter and elsewhere recently. It is not about threshold changes or unionist vetos.
Stormont returning is great news. NI needs a functioning Assembly & Executive. But it also needs *sustained* attention from London & Dublin. Restoration of Stormont cannot lead to NI being put on the backburner

I spent the morning looking through the raw results of our 'public consultation on unification referendums on the island of Ireland'. Fascinating to read the diversity of thought on how any future referendum would operate and people's hopes/fears around this topic
@ConUnit_UCL
“I don’t think you can divorce what the British government has been doing around the Protocol, around Brexit, around threatening to break international law – all of that feeds into the political rancour,” says
@ConorKellyLDN
This blog is 6 hours old and already being overtaken by events. It is a history piece of sorts though, and tries to run through each NI parties view on the
#EU
over the decades, and more recently on the
#protocol
"It is worth remembering that this story is much older than the 2016 referendum, and worth preparing for the likelihood it will dominate politics well beyond 2021."
@ConorKellyLDN
puts party positions towards the
#Protocol
in a broader context.
‘Coveney is right to insist that the matter is not closed..the commitment of the UK & RoI to work together on Northern Ireland, as a matter of fundamental principle rather than discretionary strategy, has long been at the very heart of the peace process’
It would be weird if a political sociologist in N.Ireland didn't have something to say about the
#NIcensus2021
results released today, wouldn't it?!
& a pity if there weren't slides to go along with those comments...
So, here we are, a thread of nine.
