It has been the honour of my life to serve the people of Bournemouth West for the last 14 years. I thank them for the huge privilege they gave me. Now is the time for a new chapter to open. I hope to contribute to benefit of my country in the future.
The removal of the statue of Lord Baden Powell from Poole is a huge error of judgement. Very concerned by the idea it is on advice from
@dorsetpolice
. Urgent clarity needed. Put it back.
The Cenotaph is being boarded up. Our national memorial to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom we enjoy - and many abuse - today. The statue of the greatest fighter for freedom who saved half Europe and the world - Winston Churchill - is boarded up. We need grip
I'm afraid the description by
@Nigel_Farage
of a Lab/Con Brexit deal as 'a coalition against the people' will resonate. Because it is fundamentally true. Anyone who thinks it is the answer hasn't been knocking on many doors in recent weeks.
Sadly the greatest mistake since June 2016 was charging people who didn't believe in Brexit with delivering Brexit. With great sadness I do not believe what is on offer is reconcilable with what people voted for. This is a bleak day for our country.
@PhilipHammondUK
@SamGyimah
Absolute crap. The party hasn't been taken oven - it elected a new leader by a huge margin. And it has rejected the years of miserable defeatism led by those who simply cannot accept the result of the referendum. To accuse this PM of being an extreme right winger is stupid
Dear
@BBCNews
, your organisation seems intent on alienating all your friends on the right of the political spectrum. If you want to lose your protected position and your licence fee crack on with the current agenda. You are so out of touch with the mainstream of the UK.
The near universal condemnation of Extinction Rebellion's blockade of hospitals and newspaper offices is welcome. But surely questions are where were the police? Why were they not cleared away? Why were they not arrested? Enforcement not condemnation is what the public expect.
Could not disagree more profoundly with Philip Hammond. The level of interest from other countries to trade with Britain post Brexit is enormous. Free trade is the route to prosperity, job creation and freedom. Thankfully the Govt now embraces the opportunities of Brexit.
I will vote to support Boris tonight. I watched how broken our politics became in 2019 and was convinced only he could fix it. Having won the biggest mandate of any Tory Leader since Lady T and got the big calls right he commands support. The people should be his judge.
The Government and
@BorisJohnson
will have my full support in the days ahead. We must protect all parts of our United Kingdom as we end the transition period and regain our sovereignty. I hope all my colleagues will do the same. United we stand the best chance of a FTA with EU.
The biggest problem we have faced since the referendum is that Government have approached the Leave vote as some disaster that needs to be mitigated against not as an amazing opportunity that should be embraced. That's how we have ended up where we are now. Sad.
Two Remainers debating how to compromise on something that really isn't even Brexit. This has moved beyond embarrassing to humiliating. No wonder the public are angry
I voted for MV3 with a heavy heart as it offered the chance of a new approach and fresh start with a new PM. Having listened to PM today I will not vote for this Bill. A Customs Union and 2nd referendum defy the manifesto promises I made. The Bill should not be tabled at all.
On this day one of our greatest Prime Ministers left office. Brought down by nonentities . Her place in history is assured and she remains an inspiration to so many. I was honoured to have her friendship.
Seven years ago today we lost the longest serving Prime Minister of the 20th century, the winner of three general elections and the first woman Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Some of us also lost a dear friend. We miss you Lady T.
Speaker is sadly now openly siding with a House of Commons which never really accepted the verdict of 17.4 people. It is clear that when the Leave vote won the Remain campaign only really started.
BREAKING: Speaker will allow MPs to vote on FOUR soft Brexit/Remain options. No hard Brexit options.
Customs Union
Common Market 2.0
Second referendum
Revoke Article 50
Very poor decision by the BBC to axe
@afneil
programmes. He is the top interviewer of the age. So much of the news output is negative and partial. Neil is in a different league. It is almost as if they want to provoke ending the license fee.
The error those of us who supported Brexit made was to assume the EU would behave rationally in seeking a FTA with a large trading partner like the UK. After years where the EU was effectively negotiating on both sides of the table they now see we are serious about our
For reasons I don't understand Mr Cameron didn't put Ann Widdecombe in the Lords. For reasons I sadly do understand nor did Mrs May. Now we have lost one of the most loyal and hardworking Conservatives from the Party. But not from the Conservative family. So sad. And avoidable
Really pleased my friend and former Labour MP
@CatharineHoey
came to Bournemouth West to advise Labour voters who support getting Brexit done to vote for me on Thursday in this constituency.
I'm genuinely sorry to see colleagues who have told me in person that this is a dreadful deal with the EU tweeting out the supportive line to take. That must eat at the soul.
I've enjoyed a fantastic year as PPS to
@BorisJohnson
and six years as PPS to five different Ministers.
I've decided it's time to have greater freedom. I want to see the referendum result respected. And there are others areas of policy I want to speak more openly on.
The
@GavinWilliamson
affair makes me uncomfortable. Sacked over denied allegations which seem criminal. Yet no police investigation. We don't live under a junta. Surely we still believe in due process and the rule of law? Against Chinese involvement in the UK comms infastructure
The murder of a young man on the streets of Bournemouth with a knife is truly shocking. That the murderer had previous convictions for violent behaviour and lied about his age to enter the UK pose serious questions. Asylum process needs to be made swift and the checks robust.
Do you think this is acceptable?
“The Jews are behind large groups who are organising the import of Muslims from the Third World.”
This bigoted, anti-Semitic bile is the words of the Reform candidate in Bournemouth West.
The Reform Chairman’s response? “Apologies, our
@JoeBiden
Hey
@joebiden
would you like to discuss the Good Friday agreement? It is also called the Belfast Agreement so it doesn't offend both traditions. Did you actually know that? I was born in NI and I'm a Catholic and a Unionist. Here if you need help.
On this day in 1975 Margaret Thatcher became Leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party. She went on to be the UK’s first woman PM, win 3 general elections and become the longest serving PM of the 20th century. I was proud to count her as a friend. She remains an inspiration.
With some distance now it is clear what happened in Parliament last week. The Speaker came under pressure to change procedure because Labour were worried about the safety of their MPs if they had to vote a particular way. The Speaker says he responded to that concern. 1/4
#LeicesterCityFC
listen to how they mourn for a man who was a foreigner, cosmopolitan, 'person of nowhere' in Theresa May's words. What do your white natvist influencers have to say about that??
Tonight I will vote against the absurd idea that we remove 'no deal' as an option. For the simple reason that it undermines - perhaps fatally - the Govt's negotiating position. Wouldn't happen in business so shouldn't happen here.
This is genuinely what depresses me about Twitter. I campaigned and voted to Leave. Have used my votes in Parliament to deliver the result. I resigned when I disagreed with PM's direction of travel. Can't people look at facts before calling someone an 'arrogant sneering bastard'?
Congratulations,
@Keir_Starmer
. Britain is a European country & belongs at the heart of our continent's destiny. Our challenges are shared, 🇪🇺 & 🇬🇧 must face them together!
Delighted for my friend and colleague
@BorisJohnson
Great result in the third ballot. We can unite our party and unite our country. Happy 55th birthday boss!
#BackBoris
The absolute priority of the UK Government is protecting the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement and the institutions that spring from it. As
@SpeakerPelosi
knows we seek an ambitious FTA with the US. But there can be no connection between that and doing the right thing for NI. None.
@ConorBurnsUK
there has been around a 6% swing towards Remaining in the EU in your constituency. What are you doing to represent the interests of your constituents who work in exportable services which will be threatened by loss of SM access under the Chequers plan or no deal?
I am very pleased that both
#Merkel
and Macron are now fully behind a European army. We fought for this for many years. In the world of tomorrow, we have to take our destiny into our own hands! 🇪🇺 Watch my
#EPlenary
speech here:
Very hard to stay cool when you’re sitting next to
@NadineDorries
and she is talking absolute total nonsense about the Irish border and just won’t stop talking ... head in hands. SHE IS AN MP WITH A SAY IN OUR FUTURE AAAAAAAAARGH
@Peston
Embarrassed to call myself a Conservative listening to mendacious nonsense from
@DavidDavisMP
a senior MP & ex DExEu SoS
@BBCr4today
He claims we can negotiate a FTA in under 3 months. He knows that’s not true. And a FTA would create a hard border & screw our economy
Welcome news EU have agreed to intensify talks based on legal texts. Clear vindication of negotiating strategy of
@DavidGHFrost
Pity we spent so much time since 2016 with the EU effectively on both sides of the table. Some of us still believe no deal is better than a bad deal
I have been a member of the Conservative Party for 32 years. I have never been more worried in all that time than I am today. We exist to serve our great country. And we are in grave danger of failing to do that.
incredibly evil ideology we cannot even begin to seek to confront it adequately. There is an obligation to use a firm but moderate tone. There is an equal obligation to speak honestly about a reality that we have a moral and practical obligation to tackle as a society. 4/4
My memory may be letting me down but I don't recall too many of those piling in to attack
@BorisJohnson
lining up to help him promote the international education of women and girls which was one of his major priorities when
@FCO
#maybeanotheragenda
Irish PM Leo Varadkar: 'I do believe there’s a majority that the UK should not be plunged into a no-deal scenario and it is in their hands at any point in time to take the threat of no-deal off the table either by revoking Article 50 or if that’s a step too far, by extending it.'
With deep regret I have decided to resign as Minister of State for International Trade.
@BorisJohnson
will continue to have my wholehearted support from the backbenches.
If Ministers want to argue against the consequences of legislation they voted for (even if they didn't understand it) they should do so from outside Govt and from the back benches. Not seek to tie the PM's hand through articles in Sunday newspapers
Very sorry to see
@Conservatives
using precious money raised by volunteers and donors to produce these leaflets. The so-called 'deal' is not uniting the Party and we should not pretend all Conservatives support it.
You cannot announce that you intend to vote for another party and retain the Conservative Whip. What remains of discipline needs to be enforced and Heseltine needs to have the Whip removed. Not that it will make any difference in the Lords.
On this day in 1983 Mrs Thatcher won a landslide majority. Today the only Conservative leader to do likewise leaves Parliament. Boris stood up for the people against the Remain establishment and delivered Brexit. He was a significant PM. I fancy this isn’t the end. Good luck boss
Don’t despair. Don’t give up. Brexit is going to happen... and when it does, we must finally begin the positive narrative of Brexit Britain: tackling crime, investing in our health service and our schools, and fixing the housing market to help young people own their own homes👇
I am very sorry to see
@DavidGHFrost
leave Government. Having known him since we worked with
@BorisJohnson
in the FCO I know his determination well. I was pleased to see PM refer to the ‘Territorial integrity of this country’ re Protocol in his letter. We stand with NI.
This is the essence of why Boris delivered victory. He loves this country and wants the best for every citizen. Excited to be part of the Government he leads and look forward to playing my part in delivering for the whole UK.
This is so right. In 35 years of being a member of the Conservative party I never thought some of the seats
@BorisJohnson
delivered would ever be won. Fair minded people will wait for full facts before reaching judgement. Alternative consequences unimaginable
Boris has apologised and the prudent thing to do now is wait for Sue Gray to report
We must all remember that it’s this Prime Minister who won us our seats
We all need to pull together now to get on with the job, instead of doing Sir Keir Starmer’ job for him
Having spent the last 11 days in Bournemouth and been out every day except Good Friday and Easter Sunday canvassing and delivering for our Council candidates there is a lot to think about as I prepare to return to Westminster tomorrow. Things can't go on as they are.
Whilst that may be understandable the issues it raises are being lost in a kind of displacement debate. That threat to MPs comes from violent Islamic extremists. Instead of confronting that reality we are hearing about being careful with language in the chamber and being nice 2/4
After a very testing period I want to express my profound gratitude to my family, friends and colleagues for their support. And above all to my constituents who have been immensely loyal, protective and encouraging. I rededicate myself to their service.
Governed by an external power. Therefore I fully support the PM and the Government in their precautionary approach in the event there is no FTA. Yet I still hope the UK and EU can find a way to an agreement that is self-evidently in the interests of both sides.
this platform. For debate in Parliament to be curtailed through fear, or our procedures altered by threat, is the start of a slide to mob rule. Until we are willing to talk openly about the real problem we have with a tiny minority of Islamic extremists motivated by an 3/4
The illegal parking near the beach today was deeply irresponsible and dangerous. Emergency vehicles would struggle to get through. We need tougher enforcement like clamping. Then look at the beach. Zero social distancing. This isn't over yet folks. It is in all our hands.
Very powerful and optimistic speech by
@BorisJohnson
fizzing with ideas for Britain's future. As I made the case in Parliament this week we must not only deliver Brexit but tackle the causes of Brexit. This speech, away from Westminster, is a big contribution to that debate.
This should be watched by everyone who cares about the impact of the last few days and wants to understand the provoke it is to every member of NATO.
@afneil
is clear, focused, rooted in history and just plain honest
Honest and country first response from
@PhilipHammondUK
- a confirmatory referendum remains the most democratic solution to the Brexit impasse. Parliament can propose, but the country must decide. Sign up and help us
#ChangePolitics
"This is a disgraceful move."
@Anna_Soubry
says it would be "entirely wrong" to change our prime minister but the PM must change her course on Brexit.
Here's everything you need to know about the vote of confidence:
When I left Government in May I decided I needed some person goals. It has now been over 3 months since I quit smoking. And I have lost over one and a half stone through healthier cooking and exercise. After encouragement from friends I'm going to compile some of the recipes.
So one of my MEPs is my old friend Ann Widdecombe. Delighted for her. But gutted we have mishandled things so badly that she felt the need to leave the party.
The 🇺🇸 is absolutely a great ally. And played an important role in helping bring Northern Ireland to a better place. But it is factually incorrect to say they are a ‘Co-guarantor’ of the Agreement which is an ‘Agreement between the Govt of the United Kingdom of Great Britain
The United States is co-guarantor of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement and a great ally.
For
@Keir_Starmer
and I it was important to meet Consul General Paul Narain to discuss protocol and legacy concerns and reiterate Labour’s commitment to the letter and spirit of the B/GFA.
If you want a meeting email his office. Totally irresponsible to tweet the PM’s travel plans. If you have no regard for him at least respect those whose job it is to protect our Prime Minister.
I understand the PM will visit Scotland later this week. Since this would be our first opportunity to meet in person for a while, I’ve invited him to Bute House to discuss Covid/recovery. We differ politically, but our governments must work together where we can.
This lady on
@SkyNews
says we need a 2nd referendum because Trump is now President not Obama so we won't get a trade deal. Trump wants a deal. Obama said we would be back of the queue. Where do they find these people?
Mid term by-elections are frequently difficult for any Government. If we had followed the polls and by-elections we would have sacked Margaret Thatcher in 1981 and 1986. She went on to win majorities over 100 both times. Big lesson is division equals inevitable defeat.
Free speech is the corner stone of a free society. That and exchange of ideas should thrive on any University campus. What was done to
@Jacob_Rees_Mogg
today by masked moronic hoodlums was an attempt to silence free speech and should be condemned by all in politics
Embarrassing behaviour by Chris Chope this afternoon. Not for the first time. I share a constituency boundary with him. But clearly not a century. Pleased Govt will now work to bring legislation in after his wrecking of the Private Members Bill
What about Northern Ireland? Does that count as ‘domestic’ as far as Labour are concerned? And how classic of BBC/Marr only to ask about Manchester or Birmingham not Belfast.
Hi
@ConorBurnsUK
You may have seen our grassroots
#StandUp4Brexit
campaign where we are asking MPs to to support rejection of the
#ChequersPlan
It would be great if you joined the growing number of MPs who have pledged to back our campaign
We’d love a video from you too 🙏
Delighted to have been asked by
@BorisJohnson
to continue as Minister of State
@tradegovuk
. After six months I'm proud to be laying foundations for global Britain's future trading relationships around the world. There is so much to do and this is a role I love.
As MPs we have a duty to lead. The greatest tribute to our fallen colleague is to continue to do our jobs. The risks we face are minuscule compared to those who police our streets, respond to 999 calls or serve at the front line in A&E. Accessibility is vital to our democracy.
The Prime Minister pledged to listen and to refocus the operation in No10 to deliver on the manifesto on which he won an 80 seat majority. He is delivering.
@SteveBarclay
is a talented and serious Minister and
@Guto_Harri
is a professional operator. Both great appointments.
President Macron draws the right conclusions from Trump’s ‘America-First’ policy. If we want to guarantee our European security, we need to take our destiny into our own hands by progressively integrating European defence forces into a European army 💪🇪🇺
Well said Steve. The biggest gap in politics today is between the courage and confidence of the public and the craven cowardice of the political establishment in Britain and our future outside the EU.
These hysterics are a tragic failure of leadership.
The British public had the courage to vote Leave despite just such warnings - warnings which were proven to be wrong.
The task before every minister today is to find the guts to get on with it, not the excuse to capitulate.
Lady T got elected and then re-elected twice. First woman PM of UK and longest serving PM of the 20th century. I fancy her reputation will survive non inclusion in a book by some mother and daughter duo.
Hillary and Chelsea Clinton haven’t included Margaret Thatcher in their book of “gutsy” women
@HillaryClinton
tells
@EmmaBarnett
that Thatcher didn’t try to “make a positive difference” for other women

#EmmaBarnettGetsAnswers
1/2 The comments of the Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland are confused and worrying. The Belfast/Good Friday Agreement makes clear the aspirations of both traditions are to be given equal respect. It does not compel neutrality on NI’s place in the United Kingdom.
