Before starting, set pricing expectations with your clients. For video editors specifically, I recommend having an hourly rate, and then converting that into "estimated cost" per the type of project ("This will take me 3-4 hours") so you don't lose time on potential scope creep.

If you wait until the work is finished to charge your clients, WATERMARK EVERYTHING NO MATTER WHAT UNTIL THEY'VE PAID IN FULL. Even if your clients seem nice and trustworthy, it's not worth the risk when it just takes a second to slap a watermark on there.

In the last year or two, I've come into the mindset that "a consistent release schedule" is a trap.
Spend as much time working on your videos as they need.
Make your whole page *bingeable.*
Spend even longer thinking about your titles and thumbnails.

I think there's a general misconception that "good editing" is all about how slick your effects and transitions are, and while knowing how to do motion graphics is important, I feel a lot of editors are missing the foundational groundwork on how to FORM a video or segment (9/12)

- YOUR TOS -
Make sure you write and post a comprehensive TOS (Terms of Service) that has all relevant info about pricing, refunds, turnaround time, etc. If your workflow allows it, have them sign something confirming they've read and understood it.

If you're good with visual editing but don't feel like you have a grasp on *how to tell an effective story with editing,* I'd HIGHLY suggest you take a step back and re-learn the basics. As an exercise, you can edit a segment without any inserts, using only the raw footage(10/12)

I also suggest under-promising and over-delivering here, as if you say something'll take a week and you get it done in 3 days, everyone's happy! But if you tell them it'll take 3 days and suddenly LIFE ATTACKS, slowing you down, now you maybe have an unhappy client on your hands.

Get an expected turnaround time *upfront.* If you haven't heard from them in that time, message them right away asking for an update.
Of course be polite, but this is a business transaction, it's absolutely normal and correct to check in, you're not "rushing" anyone
Maybe an unpopular opinion?? but I feel like you should never ever rush an artist you are commissioning even if they take months or even a year on your commissions.
Like artists are people too and life happens. It really means a lot to them if you just tell them “no rush!”
