I really miss this period Disney cartoons had in the late 80's/90's. I love the loose, expressive, personality-driven character animation. I'd love to see more material like this today.

EASTER EGG: In "The Prince and the Pauper," a chicken is seen being stolen by some weasel guards.
Later, we see the same chicken in the guards' room, cooked and partially eaten by Captain Pete.
I love this short, and this is the first time I've noticed this!
Bet you didn't know there was a Platoon reference in
#SesameStreet
! According to the screenplay to "Elmo in Grouchland," the shot of
#Elmo
chasing Huxley's copter is meant to be a direct parallel to the iconic Defo shot.
Sad piece of
#Dumbo
concept art where he cannot find acceptance even among fellow freaks.
I'm mostly posting this so I can draw attention to "Ralph the What Is It."
I missed this detail for years. In
#WhoFramedRogerRabbit
, Smart Ass (the lead weasel) kicks Eddie in the crotch during the bar fight. This leads to the memorable payoff near the end of the movie where Eddie returns the favor.
"Nose? That don't rhyme with walls!"
Another
#WhoFramedRogerRabbit
discovery! Before Toontown was conceived for Disneyland, there was talk of converting the Autopia attraction into "Toontopia" and having it be part of Fantasyland instead of Tomorrowland.

of the ubuilt Pooh Corner land for the Magic Kingdom. I initially thought it was meant for Disneyland, but a commenter (embermoto) pointed out that it was more likely for WDW. I'm guessing it was made before Pooh replaced Toad.
A little preview for my upcoming
#OliverAndCompany
villains video: Early drafts of the movie involved Fagin's gang trying to steal a panda from the Bronx zoo. It was eventually deemed too complicated a story angle and the plot was restructured to be more about Oliver himself.
A detail from
#TheGreatMouseDetective
storyboards I wish had made it into the final cut: The heroes' shocked reactions at Ratigan throwing Fidget overboard.
ME: I wish Youtubers would just get to the point and not ramble about unnecessary details or get overly-wordy.
ALSO ME: I have a full three minutes of my video dedicated to a character who's onscreen for eight seconds.
#TheBraveLittleToaster
One last little
#WhoFramedRogerRabbit
discovery before the video goes up. According to Andreas Deja (a brilliant animator!), Smart Ass originally swore instead of saying "bull schtick," and his lip movements match the original take.
It's pretty hard to picture Goofy as Jacob Marley in life as a cruel miser, but two images from
#MickeysChristmasCarol
books show him in his corruptible mortal state. Gwarsh.
(Oddly, the second image accidentally appears to show him as being translucent--check out his legs!)
Built in June of 1954, Yorick is one of the earliest Muppets created by Jim Henson. In 1970, he made a very brief cameo on Sesame Street doing what he does best.
#TheFoxAndTheHound
originally had a musical number featuring two cranes voiced by Phil Harris and Charo, which was cut for being superfluous. Here's a bit of rare concept art for the birds I stumbled upon.
You can see them labelled as "Phil" and "Charo" in the first pic.
IRRATIONAL CHILDHOOD FEAR
#560
:
Do not sit by the clown statue on the bench. If you do choose to do so anyway, do not make physical contact with in any way. It will crush you to death in its powerful arms, its vacant smile never leaving its painted face.
More breathtaking concept art for
#SnowWhiteAndTheSevenDwarfs
. The Evil Queen's door handle even has a little crown!
An early idea for the movie was to give the Queen some pet panthers. I think you can see one to her left in the first piece.
Curious screenshot from "Four Tales For a Mouse." Note the bottom right corner. Not only is it a rare animated appearance of Morty and Ferdie, but there's an unknown third mouse nephew. Maybe it's Phooey Duck in a costume?
#Disney
New video coming soon! A deep dive into the production of the Aristocats and Edgar the butler. (Yes, a deep dive. The rabbit hole goes for a surprising while on this one.)
Concept art for
#DuckTales
labels Magica De Spell's hideout as Mt Vesuvius. However, the actual show seems to imply that she lives near Duckburg, not Italy.
Here's something of interest to fans of the
#CountryBearJamboree
! Apparently, Teddi Barra had a costumed variant. To my knowledge, she was only in an ice show, and never appeared at the theme parks.
Interesting tidbits from a 1992 comic promoting the opening of
#DisneylandParis
, AKA Euro Disney. The story follows the Disney Ducks, but several costumed characters appear throughout. It's very funny to see how the artists differentiated the "real" cartoons from the others.
I love the sad look on the Horned King's face we get for exactly one second in
#TheBlackCauldron
. It's the closest he gets to actually seeming human.
(Let's face it, though, that's a real stretch)
Storyboards for
#Fantasia
. These ones are particularly interesting, since I don't often see ones that explicitly spell out the exact sheet music beats for each moment.
Also, in the final version, we never get to see the exterior of the castle where the Sorcerer and Mickey live.
That's all kinds of foreboding.
On the bright side, I'll say the same thing I said about Pinocchio, Peter Pan, Snow White, etc: These remakes ultimately make the originals seem even stronger than they already are (and that's saying something!).
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) concept art, with a funnier-than-probably-intended tree.
"We should take Bikini Bottom and PUSH IT SOMEWHERE ELSE!"
One impressive aspect of
#TheMuppetChristmasCarol
that doesn't get discussed enough is the economic set design of London. A good deal of the scenes are filmed in one general "town square" area, but the camera angles generally keep you from realizing this unless you look closely.
@yakkopinky
We live in a world where more people know Bubsy Bobcat than they do Squishington. That makes me sad. You and
@Jimcummingsacme
really killed it in "Bump in the Night"!
#Maleficent
video is in the editing process, and it's looking like it's going to run at a little under an hour.
In the meantime, here's some concept art of our favorite evil fairy, where she looked like she was meant to be Evil Queen 2.0.
My recent Pooh video got marked as "for kids" byYouTube. Despite the subject matter, I think most children would be bored by it. Working on fixing the issue.
This is the tacky birthday cake castle of my childhood. It's the first one I saw in person. I will treasure it always.
I do feel bad for whoever had the vandalized toilet paper Stitch castle as their benchmark, though.
The only time the Castle Cake looked impressive was in this spectacular composition by Charles Wissig.
(And yes, there are 25 Hidden Mickeys in this painting 😊)
USELESS TRIVIA OF THE DAY: The gargoyle once featured in the dungeons of
#SnowWhitesScaryAdventures
is officially called the "Dripping Demon Head."
I love this model sheet for guard dog seen in
#TheBlackCauldron
. "A Mean Dog Named Burny" is most likely named after Burny Mattinson, who directed "Mickey's Christmas Carol" and "The Great Mouse Detective."
#Disney
I think Tiana's Palace is a great idea for Disneyland, but the name caused me to have a minor Mandella effect. I kept thinking "but wasn't it called Tiana's PLACE in the movie?"
Lo and behold, it was. Place or Palace, I just hope the food's good.
I think there's an unspoken rule in modern media that every movie/episode needs at least one character to say "Wait, what?" at some point. It's like they have to reach a quota or something.
@laughing_place
Interesting ideas, but with complete respect, I think the best "fix" Disney could do at this point would be to make less remakes, or even stop making them altogether and focus on original stories. I've found maybe only 1 or 2 of them have hit the mark.
I don't comment on
#NintendoDirect
much, but I really like how the new Mario and Luigi game seems. New characters and locations? Expressive animation? An abundance of personality? It would appear that they're listening to what the fans want!
(Or at least what *I* want.)
I have watched
#TheMuppetChristmasCarol
more times than I can count, but this is the first time I've noticed the guy on the right nervously ducking out the way when he sees Scrooge.
RIP Broadway Legend
#SheldonHarnick
TRIVIA Harnick's only film acting credit was in Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure as a beanbag and sock puppet. Harnick would later collaborate with the movie's songwriter, Joe Raposo, on a musical of It's a Wonderful Life.
RIP Burny Mattinson. He leaves behind a brilliant legacy of animation, story art, and direction.
Here's a BG character from the Black Cauldron most likely named after him. I wonder how many other incidentals in different movies were named in his honor?
Fragment from an early draft of the 1993
#SuperMarioBrosMovie
. I wish they'd left this line in, if only so we could cite the first appearance of Daisy's iconic catchphrase.
Video analyzing the '93 movie's development coming soon!
Does anyone recall ever meeting or seeing Madame Medusa at the theme parks? I'm wondering if this costume was only used for a promotional photo.
(Nero and Brutus appear to be repurposed Tick Tock Crocs from Peter Pan.)
#TheRescuers
The last bits from the promotional Disneyland Paris comic. When Donald and Magica visit Phantom Manor, it seems to all be based on promos for the Disneyland
#HauntedMansion
. The exterior is pulled from this one piece of concept art, complete with the skeleton.
I went to WDW on my honeymoon last November. We decided to experience
#Dinosaur
and
#ItsToughToBeABug
twice for fun, and because the lines were so short.
I am very happy with that decision in lieu of D23's announcements.
In case you thought you were safe because you never visited DCA 1.0, you might have encountered this... Film Thing at the opening of the AMC theater in Downtown Disney that same year.
