The 2024 update of this review included 4 studies (464 infants); all studies evaluated acupuncture versus no treatment. Limited evidence on acupuncture for HIE in neonates. Link: #NeonatalCare #HIEResearch

Cochrane update NCPAP may be more effective than no CPAP in preventing extubation failure in preterm infants if applied immediately after extubation We consider there is no need for further research on this intervention, which has become standard practice

Donor human milk reduces the risk of NEC in very preterm infants: RR 0.53, 95% CI 0.37 to 0.76; RD −0.03, 95% CI −0.05 to −0.01; 11 trials, 2261 infants Probably little or no effect on late‐onset invasive infection or mortality before hospital discharge

This review included 3 types of intervention: 1) intervention at the unit level, 2) at the section or room level, or 3) at the individual level. The included study compared the use of silicone earplugs versus no earplugs in very low birth weight infants.

Transcutaneous bilirubin screening: - may reduce readmission for hyperbilirubinemia and increase need for phototherapy before discharge - probably has little or no effect on exchange transfusion and acute bilirubin encephalopathy (1 RCT; 1858 newborns)

Exposure to the smell and taste of milk with tube feeds may have little to no effect on time to reach full sucking feeds and full enteral feeds. No clear difference between exposure and no exposure to the smell or taste of milk on safety outcomes.

Despite the increasing use of dexmedetomidine, there is insufficient evidence supporting its routine use for analgesia and sedation in newborn infants on mechanical ventilation. Furthermore, there are no data available on its long‐term effects. Link ⤵️

Late systemic administration of dexam. is considered an effective intervention to reduce the risk of BPD in infants with a high risk profile for BPD. Endotracheal instillation of budesonide with surfactant as a carrier is a promising intervention.
