All of our friends that support The Coaching Ladder, this one is for you… A short story to share from 1 yr ago.
I recently received an email from a college basketball coach. He let me know that a student manager would be reaching out to collect some film on one of my players.
Job update:
At the end of the school year, I’ll be moving out of the Dean’s office at Wilbraham & Monson and into our Alumni/Advancement office. I’ll be taking on the role of Leadership Giving Officer. I’ll continue to be the Head Coach of Prep Basketball and Assistant AD.
Today was a powerful reminder of why it is so important to be willing to help others in any way you can. I'm not sure that I helped his son, but his father helped me and I will never forget that.
"As you climb, you should lift." - Coach John Chaney
WHAT ARE WE DOING?!This is basketball/youth sports insanity. This isn’t “kids having fun”. This is taunting and self pride at an unhealthy level. Play the game, make a HARD/TOUGH play, high five a teammate who makes a play, but don’t pound your chest for your highlight film.
I love what we are doing here
@WilbrahamMonson
. I'm excited to start in my new role (I will continue to be the Head Basketball Coach) as Assistant Director of Athletics with a focus on student recruitment, professional development for our coaches and college placement. Go Titans!
I’m excited to have
@coachFMartin
at my alma mater. It’s apparent that he understands the importance of
@UMassMBB
in our state. A leader by example. He’s impactful in players’ lives on and off court.
Matt, Kyle, Dev and Sean- As special of a group and heart of a team as there has ever been. Legends. You will be remembered
@WilbrahamMonson
for a special era of
@WMA_Basketball
! Love you guys. It’s been my pleasure to be your coach.
Back at one of my favorite places on Earth
@UMassMBB
Watching October college basketball practice is my favorite thing to do. Building blocks of everything a team does. I know Coach
@franfraschilla
loves this time of year.
Certainly not the outcome we wanted. I’m disappointed we couldn’t do more for UMass.
I’m very thankful to be a part of
@CommonwealthTBT
and hope we can make another run at it next year.
Thank you to Pat for making this possible. His work and commitment can’t be topped.
Another great year with the greatest commissioner of all time! His passion, the stories, his dedication, the stories, his knowledge and … the stories.
@SASRIBoysHoops
I watched a CYO game today w/ parents coaching from stands & talking to coaches about the game during game. Parents, this is a disservice to the kids. Coaches, just coach team & don’t open the door to letting parents think it’s okay to talk to you during game.
It’s back and reframed! My all time favorite office decoration (not counting family photos, of course). Given to me as a gift from longtime Basketball office secretary Bonnie M.

Thank you to the
@TheCBBAcademy
and
@NABC1927
for a great opportunity. This event is 1st class and provided 100’s of players with a great opportunity. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the world’s best camp roommate- Coach Hart
@SASRIBoysHoops
A great year for our program! 24-3. Kyle Filipowski wins POY and Matt, Dev and J make ALL NEPSAC. And… a huge ‘Thank You’ to Assistant Coach Chris Iversen for all of his work this year!
2009 a freshman ➡️ 2022 Div 1 asst coach! A kid with a ❤️ of gold and great work ethic. Now a man ready to be a mentor and a leader. I’m very happy for you
@Kbaptiste11
Our 16 year old son just broke the course record in his 1st cross country race. DM’s are open for all NIL opportunities.
Kidding. Unless those exist, then we will totally take them. He loves Big Macs. Looking at you
@McDonalds
…
I love the game and when you combine the game 🏀 and my
@UMassMBB
- there is nothing better to talk about. Go UMass! 🚩
Thanks
@TheMassCo
and
@NathanPStrauss
for thinking of me.
GAME DAY! 🏀

Watching a college game with my sons. I ask, “boys, you start your own college and need a basketball coach to start a team. Who you got?” My 6 yr old immediately yells, “
@coachFMartin
!”
Smart and knows his roots.
This year marks
#23
for me in coaching & yr
#15
on the sidelines w/
@WMA_Basketball
.
The joy, excitement, sometimes relief and, of course, agony have not been lessened by time. My love for the 🏀 has never been greater.
The 23-24 schedule is loaded with
@NEPSAC
Class AA games!
College coaches get out on the road later this week to evaluate. Players, if you have not started, get in the gym and play against DEFENSE. No cones, chairs or other toys. Coaches want to see you make shots against other players not props.
Sitting on couch watching college game. Wife says something and … I didn’t completely hear what she said. There was a block charge play. I pointed the “other way” for a charge. She thought I pointed at her, apparently that was a good answer to her question. That was a close one.
A tremendous Coaching Ladder tonight. This idea of helping coaches and this platform was made for
@coachFMartin
. A coach’s coach. Genuinely cares about the young people (players and coaches) in the game.
#TheCoachingLadder
Incredibly happy for this man. I didn't have a place to stay or an opportunity after my internship came to an end in '04. He opened his house and gave me a job at NBA summer league. Great coach. Elite person! Congrats, Coach!
@SacramentoKings
Our program,
@WMA_Basketball
, is looking for an assistant coach for our top team for next year. This position would be a great opportunity for young coaches aiming to join a college coaching staff in the next 1-2 years.

To our 4 sr. Jerry, Jon, Simon and Charlie - we are proud of you & have loved watching you grow. Our PGs Tate,
Ryan and Jamo, thank you for making the choice to do 1 more yr us. You 7 have made
@WMA_Basketball
better and stronger. We love you and will always be here for you!
My stance on 2nd time transfers having immediate eligibility is like my stance on low calorie salad dressing. Makes 0 sense. I can't begin to understand the reasoning of those that think it is a good idea.
If NCAA would reconsider, it would be quick fix to circus they created.
The Long Beach State AD wants credit for…firing a head coach? With all due respect, sir, but you shouldn’t be allowed to watch this team live at the tournament. Joke show.
Lines parents should have as their “go to’s” when talking to their children - “We enjoyed watching you play”, “Keep working hard”, “Listen to your coach”, “Do everything you can to help your team”.
@UOrangemen
Hit the weight room with unmatched intensity. Makes body closer to college ready. Make game speed 3’s of all kinds. A strong, athletic shooter gets noticed.
I gotta get my kids to branch out after tourney ends. One reason: watching Ten Commandments w/ middle son. We are talking about Moses. Other son runs in to see and is immediately disappointed- “That is not Moses Malone”. 🤦♂️

@RepMTG
Not here to judge her style but she did not represent her constituents with class or integrity. Shouldn’t our standard for behavior be at a high level for elected officials? Do what others did years before you were elected. Don’t stand & don’t clap if you don’t agree with the man
Wilbraham & Monson Academy is hiring a Head Coach of the Varsity Boys Basketball team (2nd team).
This is a part time, stipend position. Great opportunity for new/young coaches looking to gain experience at prep level.
DM me to learn more.
I knew signs were pointing in one direction, but wasn’t quite prepared for the family bringing this guy home on Saturday. He’s a lot like the rest of the family… even to the point of not going near the dishwasher.
Seems like a keeper.
Meet Mugsy…
We fell short of the goal, but the chance to learn and coach in the
@thetournament
with
@YGC_TBT
was incredible. The opportunity to coach pros and guys with great work ethic was tremendous. The leadership of GM Will Lyons and Asst GM Brandon West got it all started.
Tough end to
@WMA_Basketball
year. Lost to good Cushing team in quarterfinals. I appreciate every min of the yr. 10 guys battled. Seniors- great kids w/ bright futures. Post grads- workers & great teammates. Lucky to get to coach ‘em. Time for some peanut m&m’s & cold Diet Coke.
Two new decorations for the office. Thanks to
@arneduncan
Secretary Duncan for the commemorative ball and thanks to
@CoachMikeBrey
for the inspiration and wisdom for the quote.
We are on the golf cart, hustling to the bus stop so we don’t miss it, and look who we see …
Not a total surprise. Duke basketball coaches were at our early morning practice. They little guys were psyched!

I'm so proud of this kid. He's smart. He sees the big picture. On the floor... monster effort. He'll have a chance to grab every board in and outside of his area.

Former Wilbraham & Monson (MA) big man Djery Baptiste is heading back to western Mass for his graduate year. The former Vanderbilt center has committed to UMass.

Coach
@CoachJPastner
makes it clear during our conversation that he lives by, "You never work a day in your life, if you love what you do". Coach Pastner is a real coach's coach. Loves the game and loves helping others. Thank you, Coach, for joining The Coaching Ladder!
We have started Christmas break and in our first few days off, I get to do one of my favorite things. Tomorrow I’ll bring my sons to watch

Tough loss to end our NEPSAC run. This year’s team has lots to be proud of at 22-2. Now we continue the season in the National Prep Championship.

My son’s 1st 2nd-3rd grade 🏀 game of yr starts with a player making 1st bucket of game and running to the coach for a hug.
Maybe we have a new
@WMA_Basketball
tradition? 🤔
Another wknd of AAU & I’m thankful that my 11 y/o son plays for a coach that stresses team ball. The kids learn what they need. Shout out to all the “trainers” that are telling middle schoolers that dribbling 7-8x in place to get to a step back J is something they need. Terrible.
Looking forward to attending my first
@UMassBasketball
game in over two years tomorrow. Nothing like seeing a game in Mullins on a Saturday afternoon. Brings back great memories.
