Doing the right thing isn’t always the easiest path - but it always pays off in the end. Even if it’s years until the reward comes.
When you’re in those gray areas, you have to trust your gut. Make the choice to do the right thing even if it’s difficult at the current time.
More coaches need to realize that they don’t have all the answers. When players buy-in and want to learn, and coaches are continuously learning and trying to get better by learning more about the game to better teach their players, that leads to success.
It is with great excitement that I announce I have been named the new Head Varsity Baseball Coach at Ann Arbor Skyline HS! I’m blessed for the opportunity and I’m looking forward to building relationships with all my new guys! Let’s get to work!
☝️ WEEK UNTIL
#ABCA2022
!
If you’re planning to attend in-person or virtually & aren’t signed up, we highly encourage you to pre-register at !
We can’t wait to gather as a coaching community once again!
PLAYING CATCH is the most important fundamental skill of the game. The teams that play catch the best are generally the one's who win the most because they simply take care of the baseball.
#STdrills
*player goes out 100 ft
*2 throws later
“I’m good coach!”
Long Toss means throwing a far distance. Push yourself to get stronger. Push yourself to be better. Don’t just settle and rush through the “warm up”. A game of catch is so much more than a warm up, yet most take it as one
“Be better than My Bad” is one of the best things I’ve seen. All too often I say and hear people say “my bad” without even a thought.
Definitely something to think about, not just on a baseball team, but with every area of our lives. Show that you truly care.
All position guys AND pitchers: your catch play is the best time to improve your throwing/footwork/delivery whatever it is. If you can’t do it while simply playing catch, it won’t happen in drills or in games.
PITCHERS: it’s not only on a mound when you work on your delivery. Every time you throw the ball is a chance for you develop as a pitcher, especially when you are playing catch. Take pride in HOW you play catch and you’ll become a better pitcher.
#STdrills
Some summer ball thoughts:
1 No college is going to ask for the team’s record or how many tournaments you won
2 Join a team that is best for your development as a ballplayer (especially off-season development). A 6-week summer season won’t dramatically change your level of play
Our Skyline guys had a great time as buddies at the Miracle League of Plymouth this morning!
They did an outstanding job bonding with these great, young kids this morning. So glad we could be a part of it.
As proud as I am for our seniors signing to play in college, I’m just as proud of our whole varsity team coming out to support their teammates at their signing today!
Little things like this go a long way.
Huge congratulations to one of our Skyline and MSA guys Alex Gerdenich on his commitment to the College of Wooster in Ohio! Great D3 program getting a great two way player and even better young man!
GC baseball flirted with perfection today against Clarenceville! Senior Kevin Widmer took a perfect game into the final inning before a leadoff error ended perfection and a 2-out single took away the no-no. Still a spectacular outing with 10K and 0BB for Kevin!
@kevwid
Heard a story once from a D1 college coach who said he went to watch a kid, didn’t like his attitude and was about to leave. Saw a kid sprint onto the field and he stayed to watch that kid cause of that. Ended up giving the kid a scholarship. This really does happen!
Scouts are watching your every move. Remember this when you step on the field. Sometimes the tiebreaker between you and another guy is the fact that the other guy sprints on and off the field between innings. Bust your butt, be a teammate, and everything will fall into place.
We have arrived in Florida! Little recap so far:
2am Buc-ee’s stop
Team breakfast at Golden Corral
Basketball & Wiffle Ball Games
Yankees Spring Training Game (including a foul ball catch)
Excited for the next 5 days full of baseball training and scrimmaging this week.
Efforts takes zero talent! It does take you swallowing your pride and ego and not “looking pissed off” that you popped a ball up.
Finish the play and hustle!
Last practice i was not happy at all with our defensive focus during BP. So today, we changed BP into a BP scrimmage with an odd scoring system:
+1 Hard Hit Ball
+1 Run Scored
+5 Defensive Web Gem
+5 Win the Inning
Boy was it fun watching them play defense today
Players be LOUD with your communication! Don’t be afraid to say the wrong thing, or to embarrass yourself by yelling.
You have to get over the noise of the crowd, other players, and noises away from the field to make sure your teammate hears you.
COMMUNICATION: the most underrated aspect of team fundamentals.
Whether you are getting the out on a bunt, executing a rundown, or throwing the ball back in on a relay, you should always be talking on the field. The diamond isn’t a library!
#STdrills
Everything you do is a choice. Your day, your game, your life is just a series of choices.
Win each decision. We CHOOSE how we act, how we focus, what we pay attention to, what we prioritize.
Yes, things happen, but we choose how to respond.
Control what we can control.

First Basemen: PLEASE watch and LISTEN to this! Great video that really explains some of the little things most overlook at first base. Really listen to the fundaments taught here and see the player really work to do it correctly

Back Fri 1:30 at Chelsea HS Varsity.
Most important thing in coaching is building a relationship with your guys. You won’t get anything out of them until they trust you.
That trust can go a long way. It does not matter what you know until you have that trust from them.

I could not be more proud of this guy right here! A true student of the game. A leader of our program. A great person to be around. A tremendous hitter.
Congrats Owen! So happy you found the right fit a great school and great program.
I am excited to announce that I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at Wayne State University. I would like to thank my family and all my coaches for helping me get to this point.

was great tonight! As a HS varsity head coach, the thing that stuck with me the most tonight was to make sure everyone feels like their 20 sq ft matters and to let the coaches be the superstar of their 20 sq ft. Thanks

Had a great weekend down in Nashville at ABCA!
-Great re-charger for myself as we hit the preseason stretch
-Made more connections with some great people
-Learned some great stuff for the team and for myself personally
-Have some great memories to look back on
Very happy for my guy here! Seeing you grow up into the young man and ball player you are now since 6th grade (I think) has been awesome to watch. So glad to be a part of your journey.
Hope is getting a team leader, good ball player, and great teammate! Congrats Ry!

“Make me play you” I love that line. Make me play you cause of your work ethic. Make me play you cause of your positive attitude, you’re attention to detail, your drive to improve every day. Then take advantage of those opportunities on the field!
So happy for one of our Skyline seniors, Dayton Stamper, on his commitment to Colorado State Pueblo, a D2 school to pitch and continue his studies! Dayton works as hard as anyone, competes everyday, and I couldn’t be more happy for him!
16u Champs! 6-0 on the weekend in 6 close games. Proud of these young men.
W 5-3

12-3 on the summer
Playing the OF is not a punishment in upper levels of baseball. Kids are taught in Little League and youth ball that best guys play infield and if you’re bad you’re stuck in the outfield.
Good teams HAVE to have good outfield play. The reads to make & athleticism to make plays
“Teams teach their players as if they know nothing so they can all get on the same page and move forward as a team”
Yet at the HS level, we’re often “too good” to go back to basics. HS kids, if the pros aren’t too good for it, you aren’t either!
One of the coolest things about
#SpringTraining
is how
@MLB
clubs’ workouts look a lot like summer baseball camp. In many ways, teams teach their players as if they know nothing so they can all get on the same page and move forward as a team.
#STdrills
Day 2 in Florida was a success! Two-a-day practice at 7:45 and 4:30 with a ton accomplished. Boys handled the long day well.
Head over to Eckerd College tomorrow for another practice and our first Intersquad of the week!
Scrimmage this morning followed by an afternoon at the beach for the team. Great day and perfect weather.
Back at it in the morning for a quick practice & Intersquad

MSA has our 2023 tryouts on Saturday, August 6th, at 10am at Saline HS for our 16u and 18u teams.
If you are interested or have questions about our program, feel free to reach out to me!
MSA will also be moving our facility to a brand new building this fall, in Saline!
Great game for MSA 18u tonight, 7-2 win. Great offensive approach tonight with some timely defensive plays.
Jakob May (Henry Ford) and Nick Koski combined for 6 scoreless after a 2 run first.
Koski, Matt Groat (Wayne State), Jordon Szabo, and Zach Socha all w/multi hit games.
Proud of our guys today! We played a team that our school has not beat since 2014 (we play every year in conference). We got mercied game 1 and it was ugly.
We came out game 2 & battled our butts off to a 4-3 W! Big time outs in pressure spots, and battled all game at the plate!
Some of the best, most impactful conversations with players come away from the field or with an unexpected question, and with no distractions or time constraints to the conversation.
Just sit down, flush it all out, and work through it. Love those moments when kids open up 💡
MSA 18u splits on Sat. to move to 2-2 this weekend. Love how we responded in game two against a strong ECM team.
G1: L 8-0
G2: W 5-1
‘24 Brandon Wise 7 IP, 4H, 0ER, 8K, 1BB
‘23 Ryan Gensheimer 1-2, 2 RBI, BB
‘23 Lewis McCammon 1-3, RBI
‘23 Sebastian Casillas-Lopez 1-3, RBI
Great opening day win for the Eagles, 9-3. Saw a good lefty who struck out 10 of our guys over the first 3 2/3, but we stuck with it and kept battling and the offense came alive.
Things to work on for sure, but a great first game to build from! Proud of our guys!
What a game!
Come from behind 7-5 W with 6 in the 7th today to move to 2-0 on the weekend.
‘25 Brendan Warwinsky 2 Run Walk Off Home Run!
‘25 Talen Pilz 2-2, 3B, RBI
‘25 Fran Love 2-4, RBI
‘24 Brandon Wise 5 IP, 1ER, 3K
Two games Saturday at Jackson College - 12pm & 4pm
I love my guys! All of our Varsity & JV. Doesn’t matter if you play for me currently at MSA or Skyline, previously at GC, an opponent of us, or a combination of MSA & HS Ball. If I work with you in lessons or coach you on a team it doesnt matter when. I love ALL my guys the same!
I told the boys before practice tonight to embrace and enjoy every opportunity we have together as a team. Didn’t think we wouldn’t be able to see them tomorrow, despite knowing where this was headed in Michigan.
Get to > Have to.
Don’t ever take it for granted.
If you are interested in joining our MSA High School Summer baseball program:
Tryouts:
Saturday, August 3rd, 10am at Saline HS

This may have been almost 3 hours, but it was an afternoon off well spent! Going through the live example was really a nice touch to give us a feel on how to utilize these trainings! Feel much more refreshed after it. Thanks

There’s a clear difference between teams who want to play baseball, and teams who thrive off competition and enjoy battling.
There’s a difference between learning the game and thinking you know the game.
There’s a difference between playing baseball and being a baseball player
MSA 16u moves to 3-0 on the weekend with a win at Spring Arbor U today
W 7-4
‘25 Cole Kreuzer W, 4 IP, 3H, 2ER, 6K

‘26 John Townsend 2-3, RBI
‘26 Lucas Fidh 2B, 2 RBI
‘25 Jeremiah Bowman 2 RBI
‘25 Palmer Ziemer RBI
Love 2-3
When you skip a rep or take a break behind the coach’s back, don’t think of it as getting away with something. You’re only hurting yourself. You’re cheating yourself by “getting away with it”.
Coaches notice everything. We may not hand out a punishment, but we notice.
100%. This is great Paul.
Spend time really teaching the game in practice and challenge players in an environment where they are encouraged to be unafraid to fail, knowing mistakes will be there.
Then, step back and actually let the guys enjoy playing the game on game day
Could not be more proud of my guy! The tireless work you continue to put in will serve you well!
Kansas St is getting a great pitcher, great teammate, and even better person! Congrats Robert!
When you’re facing a tough pitcher:
1. Get on the fastball with your timing. You need to be smooth with your load to get there on time/in control. You can make adjustments on offspeed if you aren’t rushing.
2. Stay mentally tough and compete, even when your team is struggling.
All I can say after day 3 of ABCA is WOW! From learning, to some networking, to conversations challenging our thoughts and how to give our guys an even better experience… I’m absolutely fired up for this year! 🔥
One more morning of clinics before the drive back to the mitten
Proud of my boys right now. 7-0 start to the season so far. Great pitching/defense has been carrying us, with only 9 runs allowed through 7 games. Bats are starting to come around too and the team is really jelling together! Good time for WWAC league play to begin on Monday!
MSA 18u with a split on Saturday to move to 3-1 on the weekend.
L 9-5
‘23 Lewis McCammon 2-2
‘24 Brandon Wise 2B, RBI
‘23 Sebastian Casillas-Lopez 2-2, 2B, 2 RBI
W 6-4
Wise 6 IP, 2ER, 13K; 3B
Casillas-Lopez 2B, 2 RBI
‘23 Ryan Gensheimer 2B, RBI
We had a GREAT practice tonight after a team lift. Lots of energy and the boys competed really well. Especially when stuck inside, it’s important to be creative and still have productive days!
Hopefully the fields dry out and we can get another game in tomorrow! 🤞
MSA 18u gets even at 1-1 on the weekend with a win this afternoon.
W 7-5
‘23 Josh Nagle 6.2 IP, 2ER, 6K, W
‘24 Jackson Armstrong 0.1 IP, 1K, SV
‘24 Caleb Helmer 3-4, 2 RBI
‘23 Ryan Gensheimer 3-4, 2 RBI, 2B
‘23 Sebastian Casillas-Lopez 1-3, 2 RBI
Great reset day today
Drove 2.5 hours each way today on a rare Saturday off day to go watch my brother’s team sweep a conference rival this morning.
Also spent most of the drive both ways thinking, listening, and challenging my thoughts. Highly recommend these podcast episodes
All I want for my athletes academically is that they do their very best. 4.0 or 2.0, I just want to see you give it your very best EFFORT.
-no missing assignments
-get to class on time
-ask questions when you have them
-pay attention to the teacher (not your phone)
-study
Proud of our program today! Varsity swept a doubleheader 16-0 and 6-1 and JV picked up a 6-4 win in their only game of the day!
Especially loved everyone’s attitude and support for their teammates! And thanks to the families for sitting through the cold to support the kids!
MSA 18u takes the 2nd game 6-2 to move to 2-0 on the day!
‘23 Josh Nagle 3 IP, 0H, 5K
‘24 Andrew Walworth 4 IP, 2ER, 4K

I’m convinced of the only right answer to this question after our tournament this weekend:
Which is faster?
a) watching grass grow
b) watching paint dry
c) watching a semi-truck pass another semi-truck on I-94 while in between construction zones
