Kids have a very finite window of time to play HS sports and to accomplish goals they’ve worked towards their entire lives. Flattening the curve and allowing the least at-risk age group to have a slice of normalcy through athletics do not have to be mutually exclusive things.
We had a Covid positivity rate above 10% when basketball was allowed to begin in November. Today’s Covid positivity rate data has us at 4.9%, yet winter sports were pushed back 3 more weeks at least. When we talk with our athletes are we supposed to pretend this makes sense?
If you have Covid symptoms, don’t go to school. If you have Covid symptoms, don’t go to practice. If you have Covid symptoms, don’t play in games. This is not rocket science. Think about people other than yourself.
My parents had attended 95 straight
@EGR_GirlsBBall
games coming into tonight. Due to my dad getting Covid, that streak came to an end tonight. So what do they do? Buy two NFHS subscriptions so that they can each watch while my dad isolates upstairs at home. So grateful for them.
Unbelievably proud of this kid. She is so deserving of this incredible honor and it’s been such a blessing getting to coach
@macybrown_7
for the last four years.
Rule of thumb: If a student section drops the “overrated” chant repeatedly at a player…and that player hangs 33 points on the night. There’s a pretty good chance the player isn’t overrated.
Feels like a cheap shot for the Kent County Health Department to release new, stricter guidelines that only apply to basketball as we finish our fifth week of a six week regular season. As if kids hadn’t been through enough.
On a night that’s scheduled to be a boys/girls doubleheader, moving the varsity boys game to a college arena while leaving the girls game behind at the high school is pretty messed up. If you need to change venues, change the venue for both games.
Very cool to highlight a big night from a kid. But truly bizarre for a media person to claim that a JV player “needs to be on varsity” ever, much less after an opener. Coaches spend considerable time evaluating what’s best for their team and athletes. This isn’t constructive.
Holland Christian sophomore Titus Spencer put on a show during a JV game tonight. He scored 31 points and had an impressive blocked shot for a 5-foot-9 kid. He needs to be on varsity.
How is it even possible that only one journalist asked the governor about contact sports today? One question and nobody followed up. Seems like the opposite of reading the room.
Got an excellent summary of the state of HS coaching right now from a hoops mind I have great respect for. This is spot on.
To be clear, I love coaching at EGR and feel supported by admins, parents and players alike. This isn’t about my program, but HS hoops overall. Alarming.
Really proud of what our kids did tonight. Led the 12th best team in America for a quarter with two starters out. Kids gave everything they had. Special group of girls. We’ll bounce back.
Two massive free throws towards the end of regulation from
@Jillianbrown_4
in
@nuwbball
’s win over top 5 Michigan. Huge game from Jillian, finishing with 18 points and 8 rebounds.
How many administrators would drive 50+ minutes to watch one of their teachers coach for a different school district? Really appreciate
@dougammeraal
and
@WillBurrel
coming out to support tonight, totally above and beyond. Proud to be a part of
@msms_sailors
.
Montage of late game deep ball, double-pass inbounds from this year. Kids were 3 for 3 with it and loved the aggressive, unorthodox approach to late game situations. Thanks to
@pchapman17
, since we stole it from him after seeing his team run it at
@HopeCollegeWBB
team camp.
Very on-brand of
@allicarlson_3
to opt for the assist instead of the basket we’d originally arranged for. Glad our point guard was able to suit up one last time and improve upon her school-record assist to turnover ratio for her career.
Happy Father’s Day to the best stat-keeper around. Microsoft Excel wizard, basketball enthusiast, and attendee of 87 consecutive
@EGR_GirlsBBall
games (along with my Mom of course).
Was 100% confident I had some comfortable shoes in my car that I could change into once I got to school. I was wrong. Now I’m stuck like this on Pajama Day getting roasted by 13 year olds calling these the “George Washington Lows.”
I’ve got kids that spent a week out of town playing AAU tournaments, only to come back home to four days of team camp. I hope like hell that they’re a part of the 95% that take today off. Rest, relax, hang out with friends. Give yourself a day and give your body a break.
95% of D1 hoopers will take today off. 4% will go in and do something. 1% of them will attack today full steam because their fear of failure won’t allow them to let a day go by that they don’t get better
Be the 5%🔥⬆️
Another AAU season in the books with
@M_B_A_Bball
. Super thankful for a fantastic group of kids and parents to work with, the best coaching staff around, and the overall culture of the program.
Privileged to coach this season with an awesome group of kids. Got moved up to the GUAA circuit two weeks ago and finished the year winning 11 of our last 15 games against circuit teams. Excited to see what the future holds for this group.
@M_B_A_Bball
@GirlsUAA
Thanks for all the birthday wishes! And a big thank you to
@M_B_A_Bball
and all the players, parents, coaches that made my 30th special. Another birthday spent in the gym, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Student asked me two months ago what my favorite Crumbl cookie was (NY Cheesecake obviously). Then proceeds to look up how to make one just like it and gives it to me on the last day of school (10/10 btw). Teaching is a neat profession.
Congrats to
@Jillianbrown_4
on the unprecedented honor of being GR Player of the Year in back to back years! Hell of a season and career, a truly special player and person.
-1468 career pts
-76-11 career record
-4x All Conference
-3x District champion
-2x Conference champion
I nominate Kate Sheridan as the top pocket passer in the 2022 NFL Draft. What an absolute dime. A gorgeous ball. This play is stolen from

I send my condolences to my Ottawa County teaching friends who don’t get the opportunity to impact the youth today. Will be teaching twice as hard for you all today 🔥🔥🔥
@Jillianbrown_4
has had some big games in her 4 yrs
@EGR_GirlsBBall
but I think this was her best considering situation/opponent. 27 pts-scored in the lane, mid-range, 6/9 from 3. Quite the statement on a day where she was announced as a finalist for Miss Basketball
#MakeShots14
We remember Steve Kaminski with an honorary seat on press row at our first women’s basketball game since his death this week. He provided exceptional coverage of our teams, in particular women’s hoops. We pray for God’s comfort and grace for his family and friends.
#d3hoops
There is not a more enjoyable time of year than when the postseason begins for high school hoops. Preparing for tournament opponents, surviving and advancing, earning each additional practice and game with your kids…it’s unmatched.
Shoutout to
@M_B_A_Bball
’s
@Braxballer20
for finishing the UAA season with the most points per game (19.6) on the entire circuit, regardless of class. And with efficiency that ranked in the 95th percentile of all UAA players.
Two primary goals for tomorrow’s student vs staff basketball game.
1) No airballs (students would be ruthless)
2) No catastrophic injuries caused by old age and/or a lack of fitness.
Our kids played their tails off tonight. Hell of an effort from our group and I couldn’t be more proud of them. It has been a privilege to work with these girls every day. They stuck together through an awful lot of adversity this year and stayed bought in the entire way.
#GoEast
Our season comes to an end with a loss to an impressive Byron Center team in the District Semifinals. We finish 12-10 after a 2-6 start to the season. Thank you to our seniors for the legacy they leave and for the huge investment that they made to our program. You will be missed!
Congrats to
@Jillianbrown_4
on this honor! It is well deserved, nobody works harder. I think she’s the best player in the state of Michigan, it’s been a privilege to coach her.
The finalists for the 2021
@MickMcCabe1
Miss Basketball award are: Jillian Brown, East Grand Rapids; Damiya Hagemann, Detroit Edison; Bree Salenbien, Lenawee Christian; Alanna Micheaux, Wayne and Morasha Wiggins, Kalamazoo Central.
The people that take 10 minutes to pick out different scratch-offs at the gas station with a line behind them are among my least favorite kind of people.

Gave some cash to a panhandler at a gas station and he subsequently knighted me. I don’t know what authority he had to do so, but I think I’m a knight now. Not a bad Tuesday.
.
@allicarlson_3
has had such a great approach to this whole situation. She’ll attack her rehab and be an awesome addition to our sideline this winter.
A special player and person. A one of a kind leader and a joy to coach these last four years.
@macybrown_7
is the state’s best player and elevates everyone around her. She brings it every single night against as good of a schedule as you’ll find.

@macybrown_7
for Miss Basketball! Nobody does more for their team and nobody receives more attention from opposing defenses. She’s the state’s best player. Macy is an incredible talent on the floor but an even more impressive person and teammate.

A big thank you to
@Coach_BGuyton
@ReedTrey
and
@MTagGR
for putting on a great event today. I appreciate the platform you provided for high school girls basketball in the state of Michigan. Great teams and a well run event. Hope to be back next year.
Absolutely gutted. Steve was as good as it gets, not just as a writer but as a man. A tremendous person who loved shining a spotlight on local athletes and teams. I’m incredibly grateful to have gotten to know Steve during the last ten years. My condolences to his family.
Strong showing from
@M_B_A_Bball
2024 in our first weekend on the GUAA circuit! This group is really fun to watch. One week off and then it’s off to GUAA Finals in Spooky Nook.
Outstanding season from
@macybrown_7
. Hard worker, super coachable, great teammate. She’s as good as it gets in the c/o 2023. Excited to see her growth continue.
“I don’t think in my 25 years in coaching I’ve been around a player who cares less about individual stats & more about winning than Alli Carlson”
Perfectly said by

talking about
@allicarlson_3
. A special kid and leader that continues to lead our team while injured.
