It took him 4 years, 1000s of miles, several failed attempts,and a lot of frustration, but today Nathan Saltzman finally broke 5 for the 1600. And when he did, his teammates erupted in cheers. It was one of those great coaching moments. Nathan really earned this.

HC finishes 4th in state, our best finish since before WW2! We all know that we would have left with a trophy if not for events outside our control, but in the end IT JUST DOESN’T MATTER! What matters is that we showed up for each other. In the end, that’s all that ever matters.

Here is an example of love of sport: 3 days after earning a state title in the 4*8, Grace McCabe ran a 3200 time trial in front of empty stands at her high school track, simply to see how fast she could run. I was privileged to help pace. She ran...10:45! A PR & school record!

The top 4 in the U20 800 were all high-schoolers. Look at their jerseys. Only one is wearing his high school singlet. Winning as an individual is great, but nothing beats winning with your team. To go further: there is no better motivation than running FOR your teammates.

Our 4*800 last night broke a school record that had stood FOR FORTY YEARS. Up until last year, we'd never had a kid break 1:54 since I began coaching in 2005. This year, we have THREE guys - Aden Bandukwala, Colby Revord, and Dan Watcke - under that mark. Onward to Charleston.

The WSC is just so tough. Conference champs today for only the 2nd time in 65 years! Dan and Colby lead the way with a 1-3 finish, Aden 7th, Jesse 12th and Michael 17th. Abhi Reddy won the JV and led us to victory on that level, too. It’s a great day to be a Red Devil.

In the 1600 tonight, Michael Skora dropped his 1600 PR from 4:38.4 to 4:18.05 (thank Roy, Declan, and Dan for pulling everyone to fast times)! Michael's PR as a freshman was 5:50.2. He never ran a 1600 last track season, or any race, due to injury. He continues to amaze us.

What does TEAM mean? Fundamentally, it means being there for each other. This team: we had a different order every meet. Guys took turns carrying the load all season long. Henry Gruber had been no better than 7th for us…until today. ‘Henry, you’re a hero!’ State Runner-up team!

Our hearts go out to all CPS runners who were not permitted to compete today. Like the 1980 US summer Olympic qualifiers you were dealt a cruel and undeserving fate. Few outside of the running community truly understand how much this must hurt, but we do-and we’re so so sorry.

Yesterday was a truly historic day for Hinsdale Central Boys Track & Field. In the span of a few hours, we doubled the number of state champions in our school's long history. The 4*400 squad set a school record of 3:19.48 and became our 1st ever relay to win state.

Over the past 2 years only 1 student has taken all 3 courses I teach. That student is James Gruber, and I’ve been a fan of his since I 1st got to know him during his freshmen year. Today I got to celebrate with him after he broke 5 for the 1st time. The joy was pure and genuine!

What a magical night under the lights at our home track. We had 187 athletes from 7 schools compete in 11 heats of the 1600, with 156 coming home with lifetime bests and 23 guys breaking 5:00 for the first time ever! This is what track can be when it is at its best.
