Donovan Clingan has:
-stayed in Bristol for high school when he could've played anywhere
-stayed in-state and chose
#UConn
-won a national championship his freshman year
-was the most outstanding player in this Big East Tournament championship victory
Connecticut legend.
Dan Hurley subbed out his 40% three-point shooter with a 20% three-point shooter.....who then went on to hit 3 of the biggest threes of his life. The Connecticut Huskies are a WAGON
Something that people don’t talk about enough is the UConn Huskies men’s basketball team won its second consecutive national championship just four days ago
"Kansas is now 150-6 against nonconference foes at Allen Fieldhouse since Self took over the program 21 seasons ago."
Dude....that is an otherworldly record
Hassan Diarra last season: 30% FG, 19% from three, roughly 1.8 assist to turnover ratio
So far this season: 47% FG, 32% from three, 2.7 assist to turnover ratio. That'll play.
UConn Off-Season: Hassan Diarra
Strengths:
-quick bursts can get him to the rim
-confident w/ ball, wants to make plays
-willingness to dig in on defense
Off-season:
-tighter ball handling --> utilize quickness on offense
-shooting from every area
-defending w/o fouling as much
The fans’ reactions to this play in my section in Houston was something I’ll never forget. It felt like time froze for a few seconds. Here’s my favorite in-game
@UConnMBB
moment of 2023:
You gotta respect
@John_Fanta
for tweeting something like this. He covers the national college basketball landscape and is still picking up on this UConn Twitter inside joke. Man deserved to be on the UConn MBB pre-game intro video with this one
UConn men's basketball's starting lineup currently has two potential NBA lottery picks, a 45% and 40% three-point shooter, and a first team All American
UConn Twitter: “Let’s stop throwing alley oops.”
Dan Hurley out of a timeout: “Let’s throw an alley oop where the receiver actually knows it’s coming.”
Dan Hurley on
@SportsCenter
with
@notthefakeSVP
:
"We play more like a cult than we do like a team."
The casual college basketball fans around the country are starting to learn that
@UConnMBB
has a different dude in charge.
A lot gets made of Dan Hurley’s media comments, sideline antics, facial expressions, superstitions….but real UConn fans know he’s actually a great representative of the state of Connecticut
Dan Hurley with Jim Rome on UK job: "No. I think being who you say you are at your core. I know how much UConn and the state of Connecticut and the university, how much they value me and my staff and the program staying where they are. I know all those things are in place for us
I am rewatching the second half of UConn vs. Illinois in the NCAA Tournament. For Donovan Clingan to dominate that much....and then Samson Johnson blocks a shot and scores the first minute he gets subbed in in the second half....
I mean, this 2023-24 team was a cheat code.
Under-the-radar shout out: Alex Karaban with 13 points and 3/4 from three. Held his ground on defense without committing fouls.
Not sure there's a single game this season where I can question his effort, and he does something positive for this team seemingly every game.
UConn fans: If you see me out in Houston this weekend, please feel free to introduce yourself. I’m social and friendly in person, but am not good at initiating conversations with people I don’t know. I think I’m one of very very few Chinese Americans in this space so 😂😂
There were certainly a few times when I wondered whether transferring to UConn was the right move for me
Once you hear/do this for the first time though, you’ll never want to be anywhere else
Among players under 6'6, UConn Huskies transfer Tristen Newton led the country in efficiency at the rim (min. 100 possessions) scoring a remarkable 1.51 PPP. Great touch with a versatile finishing package. Newton averaged 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists last season at ECU.
The next coaching staff that gets Jalen Gaffney has one job and one job only, and that's to get his confidence going. I have no doubt he already has the offensive skills and athletic ability to contribute at high DI
(1/cont) Reflection on UConn men's season...waited at least 24 hours to write this. You can prob imagine why. We'll go with the good first and then the bad"
-let's be super clear: Hurley should absolutely keep his job. He has brought this program back to respectable level (cont)
I’ll tell ya what: when this shot went down, we were going absolutely bananas in Section 121. It was seriously one of the top moments of my life as a UConn fan
@andrejackson111
@JoeyCalcaterra2
@JCaliMama3
Obviously I hope Alex Karaban ultimately ends up with what's best for his future. I just hope he understands that him deciding to return to UConn next season has a direct correlation with my ability to easily breathe oxygen
Good time to bring this quote back from October via
@GavinKeefe
:
"We don't win a lot of popularity contests at UConn. We just win championships." -Dan Hurley
Karaban has credited Cam Spencer with being the best shooter on the team in a past interview. And then he calls Samson and Hassan the MVPs of a game where he scored 20 points, including 9 points (4 shots) with the shot clock under 3 seconds.
Yeah he's pretty easy to root for.
Alex Karaban on the performance of Samson Johnson and Hassan Diarra off the bench: “Those two guys were the most valuable players in this game. Without them we don’t win.”
Shoutout to
@jalengaffney
for coming in and knocking down a three. We’re a better team when he takes open threes and knocks them down. Stay the course!!!
I am glad UConn is in a game like this. You want to win championships? Well your offense sucks, everyone in the building is cheering against you, and you have to protect a narrow lead. Winners will finish the job.
The Connecticut Huskies men’s basketball team looks to start another run in March Madness today
Let us honor those who are no longer with us, but will never be forgotten
Andre Jackson with ANOTHER three. Looks confident taking them too
One of the great things about going from college to the NBA is basketball becomes your full-time job. You have all the time and resources to improve your game. I’m sure he’s been spending a lot of time on his shot
Anyone else sitting here on a Friday afternoon just praying that Rob Pelinka says something stupid like "I hate Jersey City" in his meeting with Dan Hurley today?
I am officially concerned about UConn’s chances in March. We’ll be fine in the regular season. Plenty of time to turn it around obviously, but if your star players can’t score or hit open shots with the game on the line, you’re done.
Just had a nice chat with Dan Hurley at Hoop Group. Both times I’ve met him he’s been kind and willing to actually have a conversation. Happy to have a coach like that at UConn
"Hurley and his staff placed a top priority on landing Donovan Clingan, a 7-2 center from nearby Bristol Central. “If you don’t get an in-state kid like that, you’re horrible,” Hurley said. “He was a life-or-death recruit for us.”
This man is cut out differently. Obsessed.
The rise of
@UConnMBB
is no fluke.
Nor has it happened as suddenly as it may appear,
@SethDavisHoops
writes.
Rather, it is the result of a patient and thoughtful rebuilding process.
Some thoughts on how UConn could improve its offense from last night. A thread:
1. Tristen Newton needs to take more than 6 shots. This guy is a stud and him having the green light from three helps us
2. Play Calcaterra more. Not just to catch and shoot. Play make too (cont.)
Coach Gil will be starting his road trip to Arizona tomorrow morning, and I am geared up
Looking forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new Twitter people! LFG Huskies!!!!
In the calendar month of March + the
#FinalFour
,
@JoeyCalcaterra2
shot 16/36 from three. That's an insane 44%. He shot 45% from three on the year
Joey, if you're reading this, you are absolutely electric and I will never forget that Georgetown game. Thank you for your service
Pre-Game Hype Up: Joey C has to start letting it fly again. If he gets 8-10 shot attempts in the next three games, that’s a win. No question UConn could desperately need his three point shooting + passing if the O gets cold in March, but it starts by building his confidence again
Under-the-radar observations from UConn MBB's win yesterday:
-Solo Ball seems to get his confidence going w/ layups
-Karaban impressive on both sides: keeps getting to rim. Did a great job of contesting w/ ZERO PF
-Cam Spencer is great in 2 on 1 offense
-Jaylin Stewart loading?
It's mindblowing when you really slow the tape down and see how much goes into these UConn offensive sets🤯🤯
As a basketball coach, I can confidently say it is not easy to teach, learn, and execute all of these plays. It's a big credit to the coaching staff and players
For the 2nd game in a row, a UConn opponent chose to switch all screens 1 thru 4. It worked for Kansas, but not so much for UNC
NEW video breaking down how UConn attacked UNC switches for open cuts and threes -- scoring 1.23 PPP
(sound on 🔊)
NEWS: Coach Gil is......well, actually coaching basketball again this season. I will be an assistant coach for a varsity boys basketball team in Colorado.
I am very excited to help some young men improve themselves on and off the court. I am LOCKED in this season
Sometimes I get annoyed that UConn MBB runs long, complicated halfcourt sets every play. But then I see how poor some college teams look on offense when they try to freestyle it and am more thankful for what we have going
