If you’re calling for Matheson to be benched, then what about Slafkovský, Laine, Caufield, Suzuki, Savard, Xhekaj, Dobes, and Armia? They were all passengers and made mistakes yesterday. Singling out one player isn’t the answer—accountability should apply to everyone. Hutson played 22:05 third most TOI as a defensemen....

⭐️Three Takeaways from the Canadiens' 5-3 Loss to the Lightning⭐️ 1⃣. Gallagher Plays for the Logo on His Jersey Brendan Gallagher has faced challenges in recent seasons, but over the past year and a half, he has truly embodied his nickname, "WARRIOR." Game after game, shift after shift, Gallagher has shown unwavering commitment to the team. He has embraced his role in the Canadiens' rebuild, leading by example and providing consistency even when others have struggled. Against the Lightning, he scored two more goals, bringing his season total to 13 or 14. While he may never return to his 30-goal seasons, Gallagher brings invaluable intangibles to this young team. His leadership, work ethic, and determination are exactly what the Canadiens need during this transitional phase. Yes, his salary has been a point of contention among fans, but when you consider his performance and leadership, it’s hard to complain. The young Habs players have much to learn from the "WARRIOR." 2⃣. The Break Comes at the Right Time The Canadiens are set to have a 14-day break due to the 4 Nations tournament, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. The team is in a dire stretch, going 1-7-1 in their last nine games, and they are quickly falling out of playoff contention in the NHL standings. This break will provide an opportunity for players to reset, recover from injuries, and recharge both physically and mentally. However, this is not an excuse for their recent lackluster performances. The issues are widespread: an inability to score, defensive lapses, poor decision-making, and a lack of effort from some players. Additionally, the team’s lack of depth has been exposed. Hopefully, this break will allow the Canadiens to regroup and finish the season stronger in their final 26 games. 3⃣. The Canadiens Are Officially "Sellers" There’s no doubt in my mind that General Manager Kent Hughes is ready to be a "seller" at the trade deadline. With five pending free agents (Jake Evans, Joel Armia) and potentially others (such as Mike Matheson or Josh Anderson) available, Hughes has plenty of assets to work with. This year, he may focus not only on acquiring draft picks but also on bringing in established NHL players or high-potential prospects to accelerate the rebuild. After the game, Jake Evans spoke like someone who knows his time in Montreal may be coming to an end. Over the next two weeks, while the 4 Nations tournament takes center stage, all eyes will be on Hughes and his moves leading up to the March 7th trade deadline. Side Notes: - Josh Anderson was the Canadiens' best player over the weekend, despite not recording a point. He generated 10 shots on net in the last two games, showing his relentless effort. - Owen Beck proved he deserves to stay in the NHL for the remainder of the season. Although he was sent back to Laval with Logan Mailloux, I believe the Canadiens will recall him once play resumes, especially if Hughes makes some trades. #GoHabsGo #Habs @CanadiensMTL

I could be wrong, but I think he stays one more year with the Pioneers. They’re a strong team, and with some older players leaving, he’ll take on a bigger role, get more ice time, and continue developing. That said, if he decides to sign with the Habs, I wouldn’t be surprised either.

My 3 Takeaways from Canadiens 0 vs Devils 4: Playoff Hopes Fading, Beck Shines, Anderson Bounces Back 1. Canadiens’ Playoff Chances Are Slim While the Canadiens aren’t mathematically eliminated yet, their 4-0 loss to the Devils makes their playoff hopes increasingly unlikely. With a 1-6-1 record in their last 8 games and now 6 points behind the wild card, the odds are stacked against them. The team’s lack of scoring—no forward has scored in the last 124:04 minutes—and defensive breakdowns have been consistent issues. Too many players are underperforming, and with multiple teams ahead of them in the standings, the Habs would need a miraculous turnaround to get back into contention. Realistically, it’s time to focus on player development and building for the future. 2. Owen Beck’s Strong Case to Stay with the Team Owen Beck continues to impress, delivering another solid performance despite the team’s struggles. The 21-year-old center has shown remarkable poise and consistency, earning trust from the coaching staff and fans alike. While he missed a penalty shot late in the game, his overall play—particularly his defensive awareness, physicality, and ability to create chances—has been a bright spot. Beck’s chemistry with veterans like Christian Dvorak and Brendan Gallagher is evident, and his confidence is growing with each game. Sending him to Laval at this point would be a mistake; he’s proving he belongs in the NHL and could be a key piece of the Canadiens’ future. His development is a silver lining in an otherwise disappointing season. 3. Josh Anderson’s Resurgence Continues Josh Anderson is quietly having a bounce-back season after a rough 2023-24 campaign. Playing on the second line, Anderson has been a driving force alongside Dach and Newhook, using his speed, physicality, and shot to create opportunities. In this game, he led the team with 5 shots on goal and was one of the few players who consistently generated offense. If he can maintain this level of play, Anderson could become a valuable trade asset or a key veteran presence as the Canadiens continue their rebuild. The Canadiens return to action tomorrow at 1:00 PM against the Tampa Bay Lightning in their final game before the 4 Nations tournament and a 12-day break. #GoHabsGo
