This Woodcock on Cley beach this morning was taking a well-earned rest, having just been seen arriving from across the North Sea. Why would anyone in their right mind want to kill such a fantastic bird? It's a declining species too so it's high time shooting them was banned.

It was wintry & bitterly cold at Cley this a.m. but, at 2.34pm precisely, the sky cleared and it became summer: warm and sunny at last – at the exact moment these 2 Bee-eaters came in from the east & briefly circled over the East Bank. Thanks for the alert from Overstrand Simon!

Wednesday's Alpine Swift was repeatedly giving superb views, almost clipping its admirers on the top of Beeston Bump. So fast and jinking, it was a real challenge to photograph and with the OM1 set to 25fps, it was easy to fill 128GB. (Many more pics at !)

This rare gorgeous bronze 'hepatic' female Cuckoo is shy & elusive, but has been between Gramboro & Weybourne Camp for a few days, gorging with up to 4 normal Cuckoos on the infestations of Brown-tail moth caterpillars there. Remarkably, on Thursday there were 2 hepatics together

The superb Red-breasted Goose spent all day feeding with Brents in Cley's Eye Field today. The nearest birds in the flock were just 10 yards from the birders on the road (nearly all watching from their cars so as not to disturb them).

The Desert Wheatear at Gramborough Hill is a particularly fine-looking male, but it's very mobile and nowhere near as confiding for close photography as some – perhaps because it's an adult? The 6th record for the Cley square.

This delightful Little Auk lingered quite close inshore off Cley beach carpark yesterday for most of the day, although apparently a second bird appeared later in the afternoon and was promptly killed by a gull. (More pics at .)

Although the Orcas didn't play ball for us, we just enjoyed 2 terrific weeks on Shetland. Apart from the usual seabirds etc etc, there were Two-barred Crossbills everywhere - I saw 24!
