Hi friends! We have ongoing operational costs that are essential to keeping our free library of air purifiers open to Chicago's arts community. Please donate a bit so we can stay afloat!!
I take covid precautions because I am wildly in love with life, because I've had to claw my way out of really dark places to inhabit this love, and because I will not let it get ripped from me by people who will never understand the preciousness of what I will have lost
These universities refuse to go hybrid for covid, they make it nearly impossible to get a hybrid accommodation for a disability... but as soon as they're trying to shut down protests for a free palestine they're on zoom so damn fast
When I started Clean Air Club, I didn't know of a single air-purified or mask-required event in Chicago.
Now there are 19 upcoming events to choose from in just the next week and a half.
It's amazing what can change when you decide you've had enough 🤍
At this point I'm convinced that the lack of air purification in venues is NOT due to owners' ignorance.
When I educate them on it, AND on how it could save them money long term, they still refuse.
There's an active *hostility* to safety measures that must be reckoned with.
In my observations, people in the trades are not wearing masks even for situations where they would have worn them pre-pandemic (like drywall demo).
The destruction of public health and the misinformation around masking has destroyed the practice of PPE in general.
The high rates of masking at university encampments is so inspiring! It's also a great opportunity to help people connect the dots between the liberation of Palestine and disability justice.

With the declining accuracy of rapid antigen tests for covid, we need other solutions. Here's a roundup of some at-home molecular tests that offer extremely high accuracy 🧵
How to hide a pandemic:
1. Cut off access to free tests
2. Cease developing rapid tests that reliably pick up new variants
3. Let covid positivity rates decline due to (1) and (2)
(cot'd)
Awesome. I miss live music terribly but won't roll the dice on my health for it. If a venue offered clean air concerts, many of us have pent up demand.
🧪Here's an updated roundup of highly reliable, easy-to-use molecular covid tests on the market today!
Accuracy stats, cost per test, and citations throughout. 🧵
I will never forget in early 2020 when the US government told us that N95 masks were less effective than cloth masks because we "weren't trained to put them on right." I had already purchased N95's in January because of Wuhan and knew at that moment that we were on our own.
If you're feeling despair about the covid emergency declaration ending in the US, I really encourage you to join mutual aid efforts in your area -- mask distribution, purifier distribution... SOMETHING! I promise it will lift your spirits
North Carolina's mask ban is so interesting to me because it directly demonstrates the interconnection between the genocide in Palestine and the mass death and disablement of Covid 🧵
PSA: You should have a plan written down for exactly what you'll do if you test positive for covid.
What medications will you use for the acute infection, how will you reduce symptoms, how will you rest as much as possible, who will you call, etc.
Feedback I get from a lot of venues is that attendance rates are low and have still not recovered since pre-pandemic.
Almost all of the Clean Air Club mask-required events sell out.
And yet, venue owners won't connect the dots.
CDC releases updated recommendations for how people can protect themselves & communities from respiratory viruses. New guidance brings unified approach to addressing risks from range of common illnesses, such as COVID-19, flu, and RSV.

Mask misinformation is SO bad. A repairman just refused to wear a mask when coming inside my home, so he left without doing the job.
On follow up, here were the reasons given:
- Masks are unhealthy because you breathe your own air
- Covid is over
- Vaccines are enough
📓 Preparing for Covid! 📓
It's important to plan for the possibility of getting Covid, even if we're really careful. Here's a guide to make that easier. It includes info on managing the acute infection, supplies to gather ahead of time, and templates.
The attempted mask-bans continue, this time right here in Chicago. And it looks like they're using the same language from the North Carolina mask ban. 😡
Below is the ordinance introduced in City Council today by Alderman Raymond Lopez:
It should be more of a scandal that we allowed for such high transmission of covid, and therefore so many new variants, that EVERY SINGLE MONOCLONAL ANTIBODY is now obsolete. We did it to ourselves.
"We have the tools" 🤡
❌ Vaccines: Bridge Access Program ending
❌ Tests: Sensitivity as low as 30%
❌ McAbs: Obsolete w/ new variants
❌ Paxlovid: No longer free via Test to Treat
❌ Hospital data: No longer required
❌ Wastewater data: Biobot over
❌ Masks: Being banned in NC
4 more free covid tests are available through starting today!! I signed up my entire family as well as my entire apartment building lol. All you need is someone's name and address.
Nasal sprays are an amazing *additional layer of protection* to consider using in combination with masks.
They are not replacements for masks, which are way more effective.
Until we have a viable intranasal VACCINE, wear your mask.
If you’re going on a tour that involves flying, we can loan you a mini portable purifier to use at your seat 💺 and purifiers that fit in a checked suitcase! Flexible solutions are required and possible for continued covid safety on tour ☁️
Nearly a quarter of Americans are still avoiding events with large crowds, and even more are still masking. There’s a selection bias at crowded events: if you do attend and choose to mask, you feel like the only one. You’re not.
☁️ MASTER THREAD of all the new Clean Air organizations starting around the U.S. and world!! ☁️
These are all variations on what we do here at Clean Air Club (Chicago): provide free air purifiers to artists so their events are covid-safer 🌬️
Some questions that usually stump people who have "moved on":
-What prevalence of covid would get you to mask again?
-If there were a new pandemic, how bad would it have to be for you to adopt precautions?
-What data convinced you to stop masking?
When the success of your business requires fewer people dying and having their successors file a claim on their life insurance policy, you're going to have very detailed reports on how many excess deaths there really are.
"I was the first person I knew to get COVID and I haven’t actually recovered completely. I have yet to finish a song four years later. I’ve been to a neurologist, I’ve had all sorts of tests." - Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields
🫂 Starting today, we will be redirecting 10% of all Clean Air Club donations to Long Covid and ME/CFS mutual aid.
Tens of millions of people are currently living and suffering with these disabling conditions, and we all have a collective responsibility to support them.
Every time I talk to a venue about installing air purifiers, they ghost me when they realize they might have to spend money on it. 🤡
EVEN when I show them the stats on how it saves them money on employee absenteeism. And makes them money on sold out shows. 🤡🤡
So many covid-cautious artists struggle to find other covid-cautious artists to work with. We've created Clean Air Club: Artist Connect to help with that!!
Sign up here and link up with like-minded artists to create with!

We're actually updating that policy to a requirement and will have air purifiers in both presentation rooms thanks to our friends at
@Clean_Air_Club_
!
Communicating about covid needs and boundaries can be really hard. Here are some strategies that have helped me navigate this with less conflict and more success. 🧵
Now y’all got no excuse for not requiring masks at ur raves Cowards it’s time to boss up and actually care about that community u claim to be doing this for
A third of all Americans are being excluded from indoor crowded events due to the inaccessibility of the spaces. And the inaccessibility of those spaces makes us believe that there’s no demand for them to be different, since we don’t see any covid-cautious people there.
Clean air shows in Chicago for the next 2 weeks!!
For those who don't know us, we loan free air purifiers to artists so their events are cóvid-safer. It's so easy when we all work together 🤍
With the weather cooling down in much of the U.S., things can get harder for covid-cautious people who avoid indoor gatherings.
Here are some tips I've learned during the pandemic for staying warm outdoors and thereby extending the season in which I can safely socialize!
I finally found the time to update the Covid Plan document with post-covid labwork to seek out. Link below!
And for those who missed it, it's a comprehensive doc to prepare for a possible covid infection *before* it happens.
The NC proposed mask ban makes me want to know more about the history of who can be seen in public, who can decide which parts of their bodies to show or hide. I'm starting with Susan Schweik's book "The Ugly Laws: Disability in Public" 📘

goal for Clean Air Club is to create the conditions in which it is no longer necessary. Literally the best day for the organization will be its last day because of what that will mean
It's honestly such a red flag when audiences won't mask for an artist who has explicitly requested it.
Is it because you view them as superhuman and immune? Or you view them as "the help" and "the entertainment" and not worthy of having needs?
Either way you're erasing them

The likelihood that these reflection papers will be used in lawsuits and charges against the students is so high wtf. Rule

I really want to find a dentist who will do a whole day of outdoor appointments!!!! I'm sure there are enough of us to fill their schedule. My teeth are begging me lmao
Some of these sprays are manufactured in Israel. There is conflicting information online, and apparent disagreement within the movement itself, regarding whether purchasing medical goods produced in Israel (and nowhere else) is in violation of the BDS boycott.
Can everyone please brainstorm the richest covid-cautious person they can think of, and let me know? I want a massive grant and I don't want to go through the hoops of nonprofit status. Just wanna have a convo with a rich person who gets it.
@GeauxGabrielle
Nasal sprays are amazing but they're not as effective as masks. We shouldn't be suggesting that they are a viable alternative, when in reality they are an additional layer.
How to use: each spray has slightly different instructions. In general, though, you spray before and after a potential covid exposure in order to reduce the chances of infection. You can also use it repeatedly throughout the day(s) after a potential exposure.
I will not spend my precious time on earth convincing people that they should care about others. I focus exclusively on building community with and co-empowering those who already care, deeply.
HUGE thanks to
@wellbeforehq
for donating 800 high quality masks to Clean Air Club!! Now we have an abundance of free masks to distribute at arts events. Masks + purifiers = safer spaces for all.
No. 3: Nitric Oxide Nasal Spray (NONS) - this one is widely-used with a 75% relative risk reduction. With the higher price, though, you're probably better off with Carrageenan or Hypromellose sprays!
My post on nasal sprays was wildly popular, and I have so much to share about herbal interventions for covid as well (ALL backed up by peer reviewed science) but honestly I don't think I can deal with what will absolutely be fuckery in the comments
Last comment on this: she's not even correct that Covixyl works via changing the pH of the nasal cavity.
From the website: "Covixyl creates a physical barrier in the nasopharynx which prevents airborne respiratory viruses from attaching to the cell walls."
🧪 Not all covid tests are made the same!!
Would you rely on a smoke detector that only beeped during 28% of fires?
If not, then don't rely on one regular rapid test that picks up on covid only 28% of the time. 🥴
Stats below!!
@fridahalo
Anecdotally almost all of the mask-required events we provide purifiers for sell out completely. There's huge demand for this and people are WAITING for artists and venues to require masks. For every person who looks at you "crazy," there are so many who are grateful.
4. Cite the new low test-positivity rates as reason to move on from covid
5. Convince people that due to "low covid rates" they don't have to test when sick.
Success!
We just had such a successful day filled with volunteers cleaning our purifiers and replacing the HEPA filters in them!! They're all set for another year of cleaning the air
Do you really need to be maskless in the Trader Joe's aisle? Mask up and make it easier for disabled and immunocompromised people to get groceries, too. It's easy.
For those deciding between Metrix and Pluslife, the Pluslife becomes way cheaper *per test* after the 10th test.
The upfront cost sucks, but after 10 you're working towards getting a per test cost of ~$8 (same as a rapid test!)
Highly recommend going in on it with friends!

Here's our checklist for covid-safer flying:
-Flomask
-Mini purifier
-Enovid Nitric Oxide Nasal Spray (during flight and for 2 days after)
-Mouthwash w/ cetylpyridinium chloride (for 2 days after)
Everything is backed up by rigorous studies and has kept us covid safe so far :)
Who's gonna do this story?? There's a major current of artists protecting themselves from covid, and a large untapped market of fans who want covid-safer shows. I've pitched this story everywhere to no avail. Someone with the connections pls come through!!
So much of people's desire to "return to normal" after the pandemic hit was because they missed their servants: all the waiters, uber drivers, entertainers, and chefs whose livelihood depends on the contentment of the leisure class
As I dive deeper into learning about far-UV, I've noticed something: every company whose exorbitant profits depend on the performance of irreplaceable single individuals has already invested *heavily* in this tech. Capitalists are the clearest-eyed among us in many ways 🤑
