Amazing win by Team India at Lord’s. In a week’s time it will be 50 years for India’s 1971 Test series win in England. Anything planned to mark the occasion and honour those players

40 years ago on this day Prakash Padukone won the All England Championship in London’s Wembley Arena. I’m sure

would love to read this eye witness account by Shirish Nadkarni in

An appeal. The father of Mohsin Shaikh, a cricketer who was left paralysed after falling off a train while returning from a junior camp in 2004, needs a job to meet his son’s medical expenses. They live in Ulhasnagar, Maharashtra. DM me if you wish to help.
Birth anniversary of the man who had the final say on
@sachin_rt
being picked for the 1989 tour of Pakistan as a 16-year-old... Naren Tamhane. Wicketkeeper par excellence, national selector, chief selector and a true servant of Mumbai cricket.
Exactly 40 years ago in 1983, we tried to collect
@ThumsUpOfficial
crowns to ultimately get these flickers. Not many of us succeeded, but some of us were fortunate to buy them later on. Truly priceless now.
August 24, 1971 - a red letter day in Indian cricket history - first Test win in England. A priceless Sportsweek issue which has Abid Ali scoring the winning runs.
In the wake of their decision to reward the T20 World Cup-winning team Rs 125 crore, Sandeep Patil wants the BCCI to extend a big, warm helping hand to his friend and former teammate, Aunshuman Gaekwad in his cancer battle. Piece in today’s

On Lataji’s birthday, a valuable piece of cricket memorabilia... a record of the concert which raised Rs one lakh for each member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team.
One of India’s finest cricket and music writers Raju Bharatan, 86, is no more. Those cricket Illustrated Weekly of India issues which he edited were nothing short of brilliant. Covered India’s 1952 tour of England as a teenager. Rest in peace, sir.
Lovely action picture that appeared in the Dec 19, 1981 issue of The Sportstar. I wonder if
@KrisSrikkanth
recalls where this hook landed. The South Zone v England XI match was held in Hyderabad.
Happy birthday Balvinder Singh Sandhu, the man who took the first wicket for India in the 1983 World Cup final. His passion for coaching is extraordinary.
Wrote my first story for
@mid_day
on this day 33 years ago, thanks to
@cricketwallah
and the late Javed Akhtar. Sadly, the subject is not around - my dear friend Kiran Ashar.
Rest in peace, BS Bedi. None fence-sitter if there was one! He wanted all cricketers to be good students of the game and administrators good servants of the game.
Wonder whether this hospital in Chowpatty, Mumbai, will put up a board today — “Sunil Gavaskar was born here on this day 75 years ago.” It could help some parents in name-deciding too.
Many happy returns to Nari Contractor, the first India captain to have team meetings in which even the youngest member of the team was encouraged to speak.
Lest we forget India’s first day-night ‘international’ at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at New Delhi in 1983.
@BishanBedi
was part of the organising team and
@KirtiAzaad
was in top form.
Many happy returns of the day,

It feels great to be appreciated even as you wonder whether one has done enough to deserve an award. We are all servants of this great game. If I’m allowed to dedicate this, it’s for my dear friend Kiran Ashar, who passed away six years ago. 🥲
Birth anniversary of the man who had the final say in

’s selection for the 1989-90 tour of Pakistan, when he uttered: “Tendulkar never fails.” Naren Tamhane - classy behind the stumps and one who served the game well.
A couple of scenes from Masaan, where
@RichaChadha
ate a bit of kheer from Pankaj Tripathi’s tiffin and prepared some for her dad, played by Sanjay Mishra, inspired me to make kheer for the first time. Quite simple to prepare. 8 out of 10 for the debutant!
No Indian team has won a Test in Wellington except the 1967-68 one led by MAK Pataudi. That contributed to India’s first overseas series win. Yet, this team has not been honoured. The BCCI cannot say they were not informed about the 50th anniversary of this 3-1 triumph.
Dilip Sardesai would have been 80 today. Fine batsman, rare character and a generous human being. This is my Esso card which cricket fans collected in the 1960s.
Trivia by CJM: Birthday boy Kenia Jayantilal was worried over whether he will get vegetarian food on India’s 1971 tour of Windies. Rohan Kanhai realising his problem arranged for roti, veg (shak) and puranpolis to Jayantilal’s room many a night.
39-40 years ago cricket-crazy kids and adults were excited over these

flickers. Not many could collect enuf tops to get these in exchange. I was in that category, but fortunately got them years later at a stiff price, pinching my own pocket and not my parents’
Goodbye Vivek Bendre, photojournalist par excellence. More importantly, a genuine, caring and kind soul. We’ll utter the words Corn Palak (our old joke) when we meet in heaven.
Rest in peace, pal.
Rahul Dravid (head coach), Paras Mhambrey (bowling coach) and Vikram Rathour (batting coach) made their Test debut on the 1996 tour of England. Hoping to see a pic of three of them celebrating on Sunday morning.
A collage of newspaper coverage in the UK when Sunil Gavaskar scored his epic 221 at the Oval exactly 40 years ago in 1979.

On this day in 1986, Dilip Vengsarkar completed his historic hat-trick of Test tons at Lord’s. Three days later, Kapil Dev’s side claimed India’s maiden Test win at the then headquarters of cricket. This is a Sportsworld cover during that series.
Karsan Ghavri is back home from hospital and feeling good after being admitted to undergo angiography SOS angioplasty. Kadubhai is grateful to all those who have wished him well.
Walter D’Souza, one of India’s oldest living first-class cricketers (Gujarat and ACC) until yesterday morning, returned to the pavilion with 93 against his name. He died in his sleep. Well played, Sir. You were truly a good man to know!

Saddened by the death of former TOI editor and fellow East Indian Darryl D’Monte. I believe he was instrumental in putting

Rest well, Sir!
Dhoni has perfected the art of not talking. Rare interviews, silence during spot fixing and now incident doesn’t come up in post-match chat. Incident-ignoring exercise just not cricket too. Explanation for last night only fair. Big ex-players must slam such behaviour
There will be a plethora of tributes to Dilip Kumar and if you use a pic with your text, kindly do your best to credit the photographer or publication because at the end of the day, it’s not your father’s property.
Ian Chappell is 75 today. What a fine player, captain, commentator and man. His late mother told me he’s soft as butter under that tough exterior. Have a good one, Chappelli.
Did you know by CJM: 30 years and one day ago,
@sardesairajdeep
carried his bat through the innings for Jolly Cricketers, scoring 19 in his side’s total of 40 during a 1990 Kanga League ‘B’ division against New Hindu CC. His effort went in vain.
We’ve grown up hearing stories about SMG turning up for Kanga Leagues games on his return from overseas tours. Here’s one by me in

long after he retired in 1994. Dadar Union SC were short of players so he turned up.
