This is insane. Cuomo said he does not believe any NYPD officer has hit any peaceful protester with a baton. I know several journalists who have been hit by batons this week, much less peaceful protesters.

@ValaAfshar Tunnels are the solution to traffic. You can have as many levels as you want. Usable tunnel depth far exceeds tallest buildings, so would work even for New York or Beijing.

Cuomo demanded the subway be disinfected daily, and the MTA had to hire private contractors to get the job done. The company hired to clean Flatbush Ave station last night pays its employees like crap (~$18/hr). Six of the 12-person crew at the terminal walked off the job.

Amtrak is fine and dandy but the train trip between NYC and Chicago takes 19 hours. It took 20 hours in 1902. There's just one daily train each way. China runs 32 trains each way between Beijing and Shanghai with trips as short as 4.5 hours. Distance is ~140 miles shorter.

The workers were mostly immigrants who are not eligible for federal assistance or unemployment insurance. For the first 2.5 hours of their shift, they were only given a mask and a pair of gloves. They were supposed to have full coveralls and robust PPE.

My MetroCard ran out today and the machine at a station wasn't accepting cards. I didn't have cash. A couple of cops were standing right there. I asked them if they'd give me shit if I jumped the turnstile. "Did you rob a bank? Shoot someone? Then no.".

It took me 20 mins to get to LGA today via the M60 select bus. I asked Cuomo why anyone would use and AirTrain that takes longer and costs more. He asks me my trip would be that fast in normal traffic. I said probably, but only if there was a bus lane. "If, if, if," he says.

Thinking about this today: . I spent a good chunk of my morning yesterday standing right here at 14th St. behind the police line speaking with transit workers about about the derailed A train. An MTA flack asked an NYPD cop to remove me from the station. I was in a public area.

Something I think about all the time: . In 2020 the Army Corps of Engineers and contractors dredged four feet of depth in the Hudson River to make room for the USNS Comfort hospital ship in the darkest days of the pandemic. The job was done in two weeks.

I’ve been on the subway daily (minus a 14-day quarantine when MTA chairman got COVID) since the pandemic hit New York. Proper mask usage on my train cars has gone ~way~ up since Trump went public with his positive case. Was never the 95% the MTA claimed. until this week.

I offered one of my masks to this fella on my 6 train. Told him it was the law “just for a bit longer.”. He declined, so I moved to the other end of the car. At least he’s scared away enough people to be able to put his feet up, a violation that often leads to homeless tickets.

Mayor Adams drove to one of the largest transit deserts in Queens, announced a plan to convert a part of the Rockaway branch into a new High Line, got in a car and took off. His spox said the plan could change if the MTA comes forward with an EIS to reactivate the train line.

If the MTA is so desperate for cash, why not reopen the subway overnight and start collecting fares between 1 and 5 a.m. again?. Agency is spending the same money either way because they're running the exact same train schedules as they did before the closure, just without riders.
