Multiple factors really: size and type of vessels and complements of crew. Types of lifesaving equipment onboard; and different types of regulations (flag). Plus, I think this is being discussed at IMO, and is this ration approach right? My opinion is no. I would feel more comfortable with that fact. I know I could supervise and ensure their safety in an emergency with a ration of 5:1.

As 2024 draws to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect and share my gratitude with all my connections, friends, and the incredible Isle of Man maritime community. This year has been nothing short of extraordinary: •We celebrated 10 Manx youth participating in our Tall Ship initiative and welcomed 3 magnificent Tall Ships to the island. •Our inaugural conference set a strong foundation for the future, and we were honored to be nominated for the MMIA Awards. •The Women in Maritime and EDI members’ meetings highlighted the importance of diversity and inclusion in our industry. On a personal note, I am deeply honored to have been: •Granted the Freedom of London and accepted as a Craft Freeman of the Watermen and Lightermen, with the ceremony ahead in January. •Appointed Chair of Pride in Maritime, HSCC, and Interim Chair of the Isle of Man Constabulary Scrutiny Committee. •Chosen as an Ambassador for I EXIST TOO and Seas Your Future. But above all, it’s been a privilege to be part of this vibrant maritime community and to have the support of so many wonderful people. Here’s to 2025—a year filled with new challenges, opportunities, and the same shared passion for the sea and its people. Wishing you all a joyful Christmas and a prosperous New Year!
