Mother, wife, daughter. Fueled by Cuban coffee and bike rides that go nowhere. Proud product of the 305. Senior editor and storyteller for the
@miamihurricanes
.
If there’s one thing I learned over the last six years while covering the Canes it’s this: there’s no shortage of great stories at The U.
Beyond excited to start helping the
@MiamiHurricanes
tell even more of them as their new senior editor.
Who says you can’t go home again?
The Miami Hurricanes have a Cuban-American coach.
Somewhere in heaven, I’m pretty sure my Abuelo is toasting this. He loved his Canes. This might have made him cry.
Manny Diaz says he plans to make sure former UM players are involved in the program.
"It’s a must. They’re the ones that did it. They’re the ones that built it, they’re the ones that established the tradition."
Congrats to Jose Borregales, Bubba Bolden, Amari Carter, DJ Ivey, Clay James, D'Eriq King, Jaelan Phillips, Quincy Roche and Jarrid Williams who were named to the All-ACC Academic Football team today.
Having nine players on the team is a new record for Miami.
Well done, gents!
Manny Diaz on Jarren Williams: “You probably can’t put a guy in more adverse situations...and Jarren never blinked. ... I think you can see why we picked him to be our guy.”
ESPN announces retired Miami coach Mark Richt will be part of its National Signing Day coverage.
Network doesn’t give any specifics as to when he’ll be on, but, he’ll be in studio with their crew and their coverage begins at noon.
Picked to finish 12th in the ACC.
Beat Duke. Carolina. Comeback wins over Syracuse and others.
Now headed to the Sweet 16.
Special bunch this
@CanesHoops
squad. Special bunch.
Gerald Willis says that yes, some NFL players have told him he should be preserving his health at this point in the season. It’s not a consideration for him, he says. “I’m playing for my brothers. I’m going to chase every opportunity I have in a Miami uniform.”
Norchad Omier, the first Nicaraguan-born player to earn a D1 scholarship, speaks on how he hopes children in Nicaragua dream big when it comes to basketball — or any other sport — they see his Miami journey.
It was his father who introduced him to the game, first coached him and urged him to finish his college career at Miami.
Last month, he lost his father.
Now,
@DeriqKing_
is determined to make Eric King proud every day, on and off the field.
Canes CB Michael Jackson today, with quite the tribute to Ahmmon Richards.
"Wherever I get drafted, Ahmmon is going to be the reason why...because I competed against him every day in practice."
Mike Harley, on getting emotional in the locker room after tonight's win: "It's been a long journey. A long road. I came to a point where I wanted to quit, but I've been working hard ever since...my coaches kept me on my feet. My brothers kept me on my feet."
Richt then said that Ahmmon Richards will stay with team, will stay on scholarship, and will "probably help us coach."
Then he said, "We'll help him get a great job. If anyone's looking for one of the finest kids in America ... he should have job offers coming left and right."
The scene in Coral Gables as the 25th-ranked Hurricanes upset No. 4 Notre Dame 72-65.
First time in program history the Canes have beaten a defending national champion.
DeeJay Dallas shared in post-game that he met with UM’s new sports psychologist, Dr. Eric Goldstein, as he went through that tough stretch. Said he swallowed his pride to get help when he needed it. Absolute credit to that young man...for getting that help & talking about it.
Don Chaney says that before Emory Williams left the field, he was encouraging the offense.
“He’s a really great leader and a really great friend,” Chaney said.
Chaney added that Williams told his teammates to go win the game.
Spent some time today with new Canes OC Rhett Lashlee.
He shared his thoughts on all kinds of topics, from his offensive philosophy to what he wants to see from Miami's QBs and what it likes to raise not one, but two, sets of twins.
Dig in...
Miami AD Dan Radakovich, on the possibility of adding softball, a huge sport here in South Florida, to the list of sports played at Miami: “It’s something we have to look at…”
Canes LB Francisco Mauigoa on QB Emory Williams:
“I love that kid, man…sad that we couldn’t play for him. We’re just proud of that kid and everything he brings to the table…we love the heart that he brings.”
So, on this Sunday afternoon, Chris Herndon, David Njoku, Greg Olsen and Erik Swoope have all scored for their respective NFL teams.
Somewhere, Todd Hartley, Brevin Jordan and Will Mallory are smiling.
Jim Larrañaga: "I told the players afterward, and I really mean it, they accomplished so much...they ignited a community. We had so much support...We think we're heading in the right direction."
D'Eriq King on facing Louisville this weekend: "This is one of the reasons you come to Miami, to play in big games like this...Saturday night, college football."
Absolutely love this: Canes redshirt senior Jimmy Murphy has been nominated for the Burlsworth Trophy, which is given annually to a player who began his career as a walk-on and has shown outstanding performance on the field.
D'Eriq King on why he gave the Touchdown Rings to his offensive linemen: "They work really hard and don't get a lot of praise...every time we score, I think the skill guys should give them the rings. They deserve it."
Kam McGusty: "I told all the younger guys in the locker room -- after I told them I loved them -- I told them to take care of this place...It's good to be able to, like Coach L said, get the community, all the school involved...it's just amazing what we did."
Ed Reed: "Make no mistake ... I played football, but I'm a coach. I'm excited about this gig."
Notes he won't be on the field coaching, but he's determined to mentor the Canes.
On working with Manny Diaz: "I'm going to be his right hand."
Miami announces its athletic department has received the pledge for “a seven-figure estate gift” that will establish a women’s basketball scholarship endowment.
The scholarship will be named in honor of Canes women’s hoops coach Katie Meier, at the request of donor BJ Abolt.
Canes OC Shannon Dawson, on that last touchdown pass from Tyler Van Dyke to Jacolby George with 2:36 left Saturday:
"I'm going to keep attacking...When you get conservative, you get beat..."
Good morning from Coral Gables, where on a rainy Tuesday morning, the Miami Hurricanes have started spring practice, their first under coach Manny Diaz.
This...things like this, right here...are why South Florida welcomed Dwyane Wade back with open arms. The basketball is great, of course. This? Visiting Douglas on the first full day of classes since that horrible day? This is amazing.
When
@Brevinjordan
scored against Florida State, he didn't just help cap Miami's remarkable comeback. He gave his mom Beverly, a Stage 3 breast cancer survivor, another reason to smile during what was Miami's annual "Pink Game."
One last thought before shutting down for the night…
One of the things that made me smile today? Mario Cristobal taking a few minutes amidst the interviews, the pictures, the congratulations, the…everything…to toss a football around with his boys.
Dad stuff. It was neat.
This offseason, UM's Mike Rumph sought to improve his recruiting skills. He spoke to Manny Diaz about it . Met with UM's sports psychologist about it.
Yesterday, Rumph and Miami flipped Christian Williams from Alabama. And the coach couldn't stop smiling.
Jordan Miller: “I love this group. I love this coaching staff. They poured so much into me…I made the right choice to come here. I’m disappointed, but so proud.”
Manny Diaz and the Hurricanes have done it again.
Bubba Bolden. K.J. Osborn. Tate Martell. And now, Chigozie Nnoruka.
That transfer portal sure has been kind to Miami in recent weeks...
Four years ago, Miami defensive line coach Todd Stroud was told he likely had just 12-36 months to live.
But he fought hard and earlier this year,
@coachstroud
finished chemotherapy.
On Thanksgiving Eve, a story of gratitude, family, love and football.
For
@marshall_few
, being a Hurricane has been the stuff of dreams.
He's now stepping away from football to pursue another longtime goal: becoming a special tactics officer in the U.S. Air Force.
The Canes, understandably, are beyond proud of him.
Manny Diaz on Ed Reed's role: "Between series, I'll come find him...the vantage point, his perspective, the things he can see...all those things, Ed has really done a nice job during the game."
So, some news...
Missed Canes practice today so I could focus on writing my last story for the
@SunSentinel
.
Wanted to say thank you to all the incredible people who have let me tell their stories, the editors who’ve believed in me & everyone who’s been a part of the journey.
For Miami's trio of senior linebackers, leaving the Hurricanes program in better shape than they found it was a priority.
That's why
@OgBoobie_Shaq
,
@chief__20
and
@56_nightmares
wanted "one last ride" as Hurricanes.
So, um, a cat...fell from the upper level to the club level. And some fans just caught the cat with an American flag.
The cat seems scared as heck, but, um, okay?
D'Eriq King: "We didn't come in and celebrate at halftime...I think we took a big step in learning how to win."
Says the Canes looked like a mature team tonight.
Miami's Demetrius Jackson, joined by teammates Kendrick Norton, Pat Bethel, Trent Harris and Chris Herndon are getting ready to hand out turkeys at Overtown's Phyllis Wheatley Elementary.
Discussion I was told happened in my home today:
Gator Husband, to the 7-year-old: "Look, the Gators have six turnovers. That would mean six Turnover Chains if they..."
7-year-old: "No, daddy. You don't have a Turnover Chain."
Kids. They know things.
To recap:
--3 of 4 QBs suspended
--A four-game losing streak
--A starting LB suspended
--Some drama with a video and a large amount of cash
--More drama with players unhappy about a potential grad transfer
--Top receiver dismissed
Not the season many expected at Miami this fall
