Just 24 hours before the deadly crash at Reagan National Airport, another passenger jet had to perform a "go-around" maneuver to avoid a military helicopter in the same area. Here's the audio of the air traffic controller warning the pilot of the helicopter, then moments later the pilot says he "had to RA."

Pilots reported at least 16 incidents with helicopters at Reagan National Airport in the last 25 years, according to data I reviewed from NASA's Aviation Safety Reporting System. In 2022, one pilot said he estimates his plane came within "300 feet or less" from a helicopter.
