This week Vancouver Council will vote on a proposal for a new parking permit program & pollution charge, which would help fund equity-focused climate & transportation improvements across the city.
It’s stirred up a lot of conversation & misinformation. Here’s some more info👇🧵
ABC promised a permanent bike lane in Stanley Park.
Then they spent a lot of money ripping out the existing bike lane, knowing it would be wildly expensive to rebuild, and that there wasn’t money budgeted for it.
“Overpromised” is one word for that, I guess. 😩

Spoke with councillor Klassen on his 2022 (and 2023) pledge, after the park board confirmed on Monday there would be no bike lane for 2024.
“You should never overpromise on things, and in this case, I clearly overpromised.”

The only accountability the City has is that Holborn won't get Occupancy Permits for condos on site until the social housing is built. Now they want that removed.

Sim: "No no. Look. It's not my job to crunch numbers."
The vast majority of traffic deaths & serious injuries are preventable.
So people have every right to be upset when an 80yo is killed while crossing the street.
And channelling that fear & anger into advocacy for safer streets for everyone is GOOD. We should all want that.
Much of the backlash online from this decision was violent and hateful. It was a reminder of how important it is to ensure trans people are safe and that their humanity is affirmed.
I am a feminist. My feminism includes trans people. My liberation is linked to theirs.
I propose the following order of land use priorities:
1. Housing people who don't have homes.
2 - 99+. Parks, public spaces, splash pads, childcare, public transit, overdose prevention sites, employment spaces, arts spaces, so many other things.
100. Extra space to store cars.
Director of Vancouver’s NPA municipal party encourages people to “start harassing” homeless “low-lifes”:
“Tell them to leave, tell them they aren’t welcome to degrade our neighbourhoods.”

to prioritize two-way vehicle traffic on Beach Ave (west of Denman).
And punt the best parts of the plan (public washrooms, well lit public spaces, accessible pathways to the water) down the road.
That's the opposite of what ppl asked for. 😩
Boyle speaking eloquently about the poor governance of bringing such a huge amendment without notice to other councilors (presumably ABC councilors saw this though), how this is inconsistent with the city's climate and active transpo goals.
