Hi everyone,
Please use my charts. I don't ask for money or anything - they're public and free. But please do not snip off the credits at the bottom. That's where I include the name/handle of the data creators. They deserve credit for the data I use to make vizzes.
I'm pleased to announce I've accepted the Director of Hockey Services role w/
@Sportlogiq
. It's a new, exciting challenge and I can't wait to get started.
Thanks to
@BulldogsOHL
for the chance to work with incredible people and thanks to all of you for supporting my work so far!
In high school, my math teacher gave us an assignment. We started with 100% and lost 2% for every mistake we made. One student made 53 mistakes, earning a grade of -6%. He'd have improved his results by doing nothing at all.
Anyway, just thinking about Lou's Isles a bit today.
Every time Lou orchestrates another low-ceiling, long-term, depth forward signing, I think about how hard Dubas must've been working to make sure things like this didn't happen in Toronto.
The prevailing narrative has been something like, "Can the youngster GM Kyle Dubas hack it now that he's on his own?"
Maybe we should be saying, "Look how much easier it is for Dubas to operate with Lamoriello and Hunter removed from the mgmt table."
Kypreos tying TOR to trade rumours around Pietrangelo. Kypreos mentioned Zaitsev going the other way (along with picks and some young/talented).
This would be, uh, a big win for TOR.
I'm all for piling on the Sens for their terrible play, poor front office decisions, and their meddling owner. But I have no interest at all in chastising the players for a conversation in an Uber, whether the recording or legal or isn't. People are allowed to blow off steam.
*BREAKING*
Oilers set to sign sturdy, dependable, stay-at-home defender from Swiss League. Chiarelli: "We think he's a guy who can really carry water for us on the back end. Capable of soaking up big minutes."
Josh Donaldson is my five-year-old son's favourite player so my son's about to learn a lesson about windows of competition, asset management, and the MLB trade waiver system.
CAR acquires Hamilton for a good price. Then doesn't get enough for Skinner.
BUF acquires Skinner for a good price. Didn't get enough for ROR.
It's the circle of who-knows-which-GMs-are-actually-good-except-for-probably-Dubas life.
Off-season additions
Here's a look at which teams have added the most this off-season through signings and trades.
*Fun note: all of NYI's additions have carried negative values (i.e. below replacement level)*
Hi everyone,
There's something positive to be said for all of the teams that sign absolutely no one this weekend and simply promote from within.
Thanks for your time.
A lesson in poor breakouts under zero pressure:
- skate onto your partner's side
- your partner is Gardiner but you ignore him
- wait until a forechecker gets a stick into yours
- chip an inaccurate pass the length of the ice
- create an icing with <2 mins in a tied game
Lamoriello on Ho-Sang: “Thought he worked hard, gave us everything he had... He just needs to go to the minors, he’s got ability, go there and get over all these issues that I haven’t seen, that transpired in the past. He’s been excellent in camp. Just go grow and get better.”
I know it's tempting to feel upset with Nylander for his part in the contract impasse with the Leafs. But I just keep reminding myself that players have short careers and are paid by billionaire owners and, if there's a side to get on, it should usually be the player's side.
Good morning,
Marc-Andre Fleury has prevented ~18 goals more than an average goalie would have in his spot.
That's about 14 goals better than Braden Holtby, who is third-best in the playoffs.
Hi everyone,
The letter P (and all of the surrounding keys) died on my laptop in January. I've been working by copy-and-paste for six months. Today, my laptop was fixed. I'd like to celebrate:
Puck Pacioretty pads player Parayko apply pass position
Thank you for your time.
In another era, Phil Kessel would've 10/10 flown down the wing, helmet-free, smoking a cigarette while snapping a shot top-corner.
You know, we might even see him do it in this era.
I have free agency thoughts:
- Tavares is worth it, Carlson isn't
- Pateryn, Roussel could be nice, cheap adds for depth
- there will be no offer sheets
Thank you for your time.
Off-season +/-
A look at the value added and lost by teams so far in this off-season (including signings and trades)
Buf, Car, Phi, and Cgy have made the most net gains.
Ott, Bos, Wpg, and Nyi have suffered the greatest net losses.
Well this is super neat.

Most UFA signings don't really work out. The following is a list of free agents a team should be excited to sign tomorrow:
- Tavares, John
