📌 a must read, candid piece that reveals why some boards aren't effective.
Alright, let’s talk about how board members are really selected—because, honestly, it’s not always about merit. People often ask me: How do you get on a board? The real answer? Luck, personal connections, shareholder preferences, and sometimes—just sometimes—actual merit. But let’s be real, merit is usually the last thing that matters. Think about it—highly skilled professionals go their whole careers without ever being considered for a board position, while others land board seats just because they know the right people. Now, let’s bust a big myth: Are board members always more knowledgeable than management? Nope. Far from it. Some board members got there by chance, not because they’re the best. They sit in meetings, nod along, say very little, and pretend to be in charge—meanwhile, companies struggle under their watch. In fact, some businesses might actually perform better without a board because instead of driving progress, some boards just slow everything down. And here’s something even stranger… Why do we appoint board members first and then train them on integrity? Shouldn’t we just pick people with integrity from the start? No amount of governance training will suddenly make someone ethical. What really matters? Boards should be filled with people who: ✅ Have real expertise in the business and industry ✅ Think critically and ask the tough questions ✅ Aren’t afraid to challenge the status quo ✅ Actually add value, not just warm seats At the end of the day, a board is only as good as the people on it. If selection keeps being based on connections rather than competence, we’ll keep seeing the same ineffective governance—and businesses will suffer for it. So, what do you think? Have you seen boards that actually make a difference, or are they just “boarding”? @ipcconsultants
