Professor, 4 year Executive VP & COO, Thoracic Surgeon, over 19,000operations, 2700 robotic operations, Academic All American in baseball, Tweets are my own.
Videos serve as a pathway for surgeons to learn Thoracic Robotic Surgery. We hope your patients get excellent outcomes with these proven techniques, which can be viewed here in sequential order.
Important new finding for covid patients - some seem to form late pneumatoceles with pneumo and / or empyema - we have had to operate on 4 - if U do, important to open and drain pneumatocele some r infected - results r too early but it seems to help pts- video shows technique
On Mother’s Day i think of my wife Lorraine.. Who like so many moms out there dedicated her entire life to her 3 boys .. gave up her career ..to drive her children to multiple activities and to love them unconditionally every day..
Happy Mother’s Day to all the dedicated moms ..
The greatest honor of my professional career has been serving the staff , doctors and nurses of New York Hospital (NYU) Langone Health this past 5 weeks- amazing story book effort of professionalism humility and outstanding care of thousand of Covid 19 patients - I thank them
Perhaps a greater honor then serving our pts is the opportunity to serve and mentor our medical students, residents and fellows - it’s easy to forget with 15 hrs day- but don’t
Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers and to the many mothers who serves as fathers as well.. there is no more important role or higher honor than serving as a parent and modeling excellence to our children ..congrats
Honored to have served as a visiting professor at the National Institute of Oncology in Budapest Hungary this week - a team of outstanding surgeons and leaders who provide their patients and healthcare workers exemplary care and concern
Surgeons r like an athlete .. our outcomes r based on proper preparation.. ability to inspire our operative team and our performance under pressure is guided by a mindset that can be taught
Does any Olympic athlete eat half a banana and a cup of coffee prior to performing ... why do surgeons underestimate the importance of their diet, sleep, and nutrition .. can’t super perform without optimizing these arenas
How can we help end this systemic racism that exists? It is not talking but rather listening- active listening more closely now than ever before to the many unheard voices that cry from our streets - if we listen carefully perhaps we can then act thoughtfully, in unity
NYU Langone Hospital is proud to announce their 3 star STS database ranking for lung cancer surgery - only one of 7 out of 199 hospitals in US and Canada to achieve this highest score- congrats to the NYU Langone Cancer Center and the Thoracic and Pulmonary Teams
NYU Langone Health is proud to offer a 1 yr robotic fellowship - we are only 1 of 2 NYC 3 star STS lobectomy- have two of the most experienced thoracic robotic surgeons in the world - starts July 2020- sleeves, distal tracheal resections etc. are all done robotically here
As their are different love languages - there are different coachability languages - some respond best to words of praise some to a challenge - our paper on this is coming out soon
The most accomplished champion is one whose path was most marred by failures .. the only road to success is one of failure.. High painful obstacles .. wrong Turns..
The key is our response to the adversity and return to the journey
we just posted another right robotic tracheal resection for a mid- tracheal tumor - this one at the level of the innominate artery - on our you tube channel - shows technique to reduce tension - pt is on VV ECMO- has no chest tube, goes home in 23 hours and no chin suture used
will be posting on our YouTube channel - cerfolio surgery - our 4 arm Xi robotic lung resection subcostal technique - seems to reduce postop pain by avoiding the intercostal nerves entirely - and we have been removing chest tubes before patient awakes for over a year now
When crisis hits - in board room or operating room - remember the 3 p’s: poise- purpose- partner. Video coming to our you tube channel showing the p’s in the OR with PA injury : poise, pressure, Call partner, proximal control of PA, PRBC’s, prayers, peacefulness
Posted a left intrapericardial pneumonectomy performed robotically on YouTube channel. Though rarely indicated, if necessary can be done robotically and safely during the Covid crisis if have to- technical details shown - T4N1M0, s/p rad/chemo/immuno done with Mike Zervos
Congrats to ESTS and to all the high quality surgeons and talks in Ljubljana Slovenia .. for a high quality program .. an inspiring and emotional presidential address from Konstantinos and grace and humility from the many speakers.. my honor to play a small role till next year
We know our work metrics to the decimal point .. but do we measure or record the true metrics that matter ..how we r performing as spouse, children, parents .. do we measure record and improve that process ?
Culture of an organization is projected by what it rewards and where it spends its money, not just their collective shared attitudes ideas values and behaviors
We have championed a right upper lobe done posteriorly by taking the bronchus first - the same can be done with a difficult right lower lobectomy - We r privileged to post another instructional video on our YouTube channel - Cerfolio robotics - and a link on Twitter later
it’s incumbent on all of us to share all of our medical data in order to elevate the care of all Americans who deserve to have the highest quality healthcare as a basic right regardless of race gender religion

Video shows the techniques of how to quickly control a PA injury and ensure outstanding outcomes for patients
Another tracheal resection on ECMO coming to our you tube channel- note technique of tension release - and where and how start and end anastomoses - patient goes home in 23 hours- was told elsewhere needed thoracotomy and chin needed to be sewn to the chest- both ludicrous
Robotic RUL after immunotherapy, with proximal control of the main PA via
@YouTube
shows how to divide airway first to make PA artery dissection easier, how to fix an opening in the RMSB robotically, and how to obtain R main PA control robotically- Cerf
We just posted on our YouTube channel - a left robotic thymectomy for an invasive B-2 thymoma that required resection of the pericardium, part of the left upper lobe and then clipping of the left atrial appendage to allow the patient can come off blood thinners because of a fib
For all going to the AATS- sessions are on how we can care better for our patients- please make time to attend a session that is about how you can care better for you- the AATS wellness session - Saturday May 14 at 10 am
This video shows another one of our tracheal resections performed robotically on VV-ECMO with a one day length of stay and shows our mobilization technique to avoid any guardian chin suture
Nice interview son.. I’m proud of the teams ability to fight back .. a never quit attitude will serve them all well in life . Great leadership and coaching has led to this Columbia baseball culture ..
Later tonight should be posting on my you tube channel .. Cerfolio robotic - robotic resection of a 6 1/2 cm tumor around the descending aorta with large collateral vessels- pt deferred embolization preop
This video - link above - on our you tube channel - Cerfolio Surgery - shows the technical steps in a robotic segmentectomy of S6 and S10 in the left lower lobe
Surgery has nothing to do with the Naval seals.. they prepare 50 times for one operation a month ... we perform 50 operations a month and only get to prepare once
we added a video to our you tube channel - that depicts how to perform a right lower lobectomy with sleeve anastomosis of the bronchus intermedius to the right middle lobe bronchus and adjust sutures placement given the significant lumenal difference of the two bronchi
When performing an S6 superior segmentectomy take the V6 vein from the back prior - PRIOR - to the B6 bronchus and even the arterial A6 branch - it’s safer, leads to better N1 Lymph node dissection - and now theoretic oncologist advantage of vein before artery
innovation continues. we remove chest tubes in 70% of our robotic lobectomy in the OR “chest tube less surgery” This video shows a “chest less incisional lung surgery” using the Xi robot since the SP robot will have many pecuniary and logistic challenges to be scaled globally
This video shows the step-by-step process for how to respond in the OR when a robotic stapler misfires and freezes on the PA -

The main import is there was low hanging fruit if I surgeons coming together and eliminate 80% of the unnecessary equipment on their tray.. less to count, clean s d carry ..
And less equipment
We as providers of the best health care In the world at the Lowest cost and thus Best values.. r not interested in your comfort level .. if you are not comfortable evolving and getting rid of non-valued steps -best you get out of medicine and surgery all together - as we improve
First you get the dean and the CEO to see the cost savings .. meetings take few month .... then u engage divisional and department chairs in profit sharing 10% of the hospital savings .. that leads to quick engagement
Thank u.. it’s most
@important
article I have written .. its shows surgeon’s true value to institution.. not silly RVU’s ..
We r much more.. leaders.. cultural architectures and educators ..

This video shows how to take adhesions down with a robotic camera, obtain control of the SVC and R main PA and resect recurrent B-2 Thymoma on SVC and pericardium.
The SP has limited availability. Subcostal and subxiphoid incisions avoid the intercostal nerves and provide optimal view of the thymus and phrenic nerves. A video on our YOU TUBE channel (Cerfolio Surgery) demonstrates a subcostal/subxiphoid thymectomy using an XI robot.
