“The Story” remains one of the most beautiful songs ever. And Brandi Carlile is incredible. #SNL

Leaving everything behind & moving to a new country takes a lot of courage—regardless of how old you may be. Tonight, my friend and I walked and laughed together as we watched our kids link arms and skip to the S-Bahn station. It feels good to have a community.

Feeling emotional today as these two boys move up to the 7th grade (which is high school at their school!). A year in Berlin. A year of growing and of meeting new people. A year of acceptance and love. A year of belonging. These two definitely feel at home.

They ordered their own döner and felt pretty proud of themselves. All four kids are currently discussing whether you could live entirely off of döner. 😜 (And yes, that’s just bread with beef and a ton of fries. No sauce. No salad. Only €3.99!)

Since moving to Berlin, I’ve used public transit (and ridden in an occasional rental car). I drove yesterday for the first time in 14 months. I thought I would feel free; I’ve always loved driving! Instead, I was anxious. I missed the convenience of taking the bus or the train.

@jamarperry I showed my two 11 year olds your tweet about the book signing, & they both said, “Mom, make sure he knows we loved him! We would have gone!” I hope you know how much those author visits mean to kids. So grateful for people like you who willingly share their time and talents. 💗

Wanderer above the Sea of Fog by Caspar David Friedrich is one of my favorite pieces of Romanticism. While many of Friedrich’s paintings are currently on display in Berlin, this one (understandably) remained in Hamburg. I got to see it this morning. Totally cried. 🩵

Me, telling a new doctor in NY I have Celiac’s, alopecia, Ehlers-Danlos, Hashimoto’s, lupus, and hemophilia: “Wow, you have a complicated medical history.” True. Me, telling my new doctor in Berlin the same thing: “Wow, you have many problems and very bad genes.” Also true.

@adamingersoll What an amazing person you are!🩷 This was April 2011. We were flying from SLC to Columbia, SC, but we definitely had a connecting flight (which was often MSP or ORD). This photo was taken during that trip to South Carolina. (And you can see, my daughter was the cutest handful.)
