We learned about a (simplified) version of the standard model in high school. I'm not a fan of teaching people about complicated things in such a simplified manner that it is essentially useless though. People can visualize electrons and nucleons. But good luck wrapping your head around the weak force, color charge, lepton number or the Higgs if you have never heard of gauge invariance.

It really baffles me where all of the money goes in decent American universities. You have a bunch of terribly paid PhD students and postdocs and a couple of decently paid professors teach classes that each student pays tens of thousands of dollars a year for, and they still need to apply for research grants for postdoc positions and equipment, which the university also takes a cut off.

@brymko The link in the article 404s unfortunately. But the $1.2 million is on an Amex card, so very likely personal debt

@brymko Looking at his financial statements, seems like he's just blowing all of his book money before even earning it

I refuse to believe this is common. If you actually have money, you can get loans significantly cheaper. You'd have to live paycheck-to-paycheck on a high 6 figure income for this to make any sense, and even then this just shows terrible financial decision making at a level that would make me never want to loan you money
