Samwell: My dog, Pongo?
Daenerys: Run over by a carriage.
Samwell: My goldfish, Goldie?
Daenerys: Eaten by the cat.
Samwell: My cat?
Daenerys: Choked on the goldfish.
IDK. “Daenerys’ cold reaction to the murder of her abusive brother foreshadowed her turn to madness” is weird analysis of a show where Tyrion strangled his girlfriend to death and we’re supposed to see him as a lovable hero.
Have there ever been worse blockbuster characters than Owen Grady and Claire Dearing? Not an ounce of chemistry or a single likable personality trait between them.
Whenever a "which bad movie do you secretly love?" post goes around, at least half of the answers are legitimately great movies we've been taught to devalue because they're aimed at women.
One thing I really appreciate about Hawkeye is that it's treating Black Widow's death like it mattered, in a way that neither Endgame nor her own literal solo film managed to do.
I appreciate Seth Rogen calling out the crowded indoor setting of the Emmys, both because I was thinking it and because it’s now funny to watch the show scramble to course correct the narrative.
I’m also genuinely very worried about this “everyone is outraged by an out-of-context idea summed up in a snappy but slightly misleading headline” cycle we keep finding ourselves in on Twitter.
In our rush to categorize everything as either “perfect” or “the worst,” we’re losing the ability to discuss the complicated nuances of reality. A lot of things — most in fact — are both good and bad!
ME: Tessa and Scott clearly have a Ginny/Harry thing going on. She used to have this massive one-sided crush on him, but now she's matured into this incredible woman and he's completely in love with her.
WAITER: Umm, I said "Can I take your order?"
But I’m also not sure that Indra Nooyi as an individual deserves to be thrown under the bus for acknowledging/discussing the realities of her industry in an interview about her job?
I genuinely think 90% of the reason people turned on Chris Pratt is because of how ill-conceived/acted his Jurassic World performances are. To the point where I’m always shocked by how charming he still is in Marvel movies because this franchise tainted his image so much.
Other things Nooyi discusses in the interview: Growing up in India, being CEO in the middle of the financial crisis, the importance of young people sticking with STEM, and the way she drastically retooled the company to add a nutritional component to the brand.
Yes, it’s super shitty that we live in a society that socializes men and women to act differently and that giant companies then utilize and encourage that in their marketing schemes.
Tessa and Scott in a spotlight, skating to “This Is Me” while all the other Olympic figure skaters surround them is like a fever dream I had that somehow wound up on primetime TV.
I love that the Game of Thrones dragons are either named like vikings (Vhagar, Balerion), mythic Greek war heroes (Caraxes, Syrax) or My Little Ponies (Seasmoke, Dreamfyre, Silverwing).
Hi. No one is making a “Lady Dorito.” Freakonimics interviewed Pepsi CEO Indra Nooyi —one of the few women to run such a massive company—and specifically asked how her company approaches male and female consumers.
Can’t wait for another Wonder Woman movie that makes zero reference to Diana’s beloved aunt and mentor who’s death introduced her to the very concept of mortality! Thank god she has this dude to motivate her instead.
I try never to participate in the ~discourse~ around here, but this does seem like the right time to plug the fact that I spent four years writing a column about 100+ rom-coms across 80+ years of filmmaking history.
Do other vaccinated people feel like they have absolutely no idea how they're supposed to be living right now? Maybe more so than any other moment in the pandemic, I have no idea what even constitutes "safe" and "risky" behavior anymore.
In retrospect, I really think the main throughline of
#FalconAndTheWinterSoldier
should've been about Sam and Bucky investigating the history of Isaiah Bradley. It was the most compelling part of the show, and also a really natural thing to tie the two title characters together.
I opened my 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU retrospective by talking about Heath's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" scene, but I want to expand on that a little further because I think it's one of the best rom-com grand gestures ever.
Spin-off series where Jonathan Groff from Mindhunter and Andrew Garfield from Under the Banner of Heaven go around soft-spokenly solving crimes together.
Disney CEO Bob Iger, who makes $27 million a year, went to TV to say that writers and actors aren't being realistic with their demands.
When asked why these workers are being unrealistic he says, "I can't, I can't answer that."
FRESH: I don’t know if this totally added up for me, but what a Sebastian Stan showcase! How did the MCU manage to misuse him so badly when he’s been pretty uniformly fantastic in everything else I’ve ever seen him in?
#Sundance2022
This is the prime example of a Game of Thrones character who has been on the show for years, and who I’m equally sure I’ve never seen before in my life. But I’m grateful that musical cue let me know I should feel sad when he dies next week.
Varys: There’s a 50/50 chance that any Targaryen will just randomly go mad.
Also Varys: The only person fit to rule Westeros is Jon Snow a.k.a. Aegon Targaryen. There is absolutely zero chance that guy will ever mess up or make any irrational, impulsive decisions.
Star Wars is by far the most depressing big budget movie franchise. On a long enough time scale, evil always wins and everyone lives terrible lives before dying tragic deaths.
Finally watched the Euphoria finale and, dang, talk about an all-time great rom-com line: "Is one of us gonna get hurt? Yeah. Probably. But I’ll do my best to make sure that it’s me." I hope Sam Levinson took the day off after that one.
Have now seen Endgame twice and don’t really know what to do with all my thoughts on it (have me on your podcast?), but let me just say that the work Karen Gillan has done to elevate Nebula into one of the MCU’s most compelling characters is *incredibly* impressive.
It was one thing to watch the Cats trailer when I knew what I was clicking on, but the thought of it playing for innocent movie goers without any warning is too much to handle.
Some weird and wonderful news: If you fly Southwest this month, check out the in-flight magazine because I wrote a piece for it all about the return of the romantic comedy!
