Please take a moment to read this important story. It is a great example of why I’ve been so vocal about the need to do more to prevent fraud and abuse of tax dollars. In addition to the amendments I’ve offered, another option we should look into is a report card indicating each agency’s corrective actions on findings by the legislative auditor. I’m working on this now and plan to introduce legislation next session.

On Minnesota Municipal Utilities Day I had the opportunity to connect with Tim McCollough for a helpful update on Rochester Public Utilities (RPU). We discussed RPU’s innovative advanced metering initiative, which aims to lower electricity costs and promote more efficient energy use through smart technology. I also shared information about my legislation to provide a sales tax exemption for the construction of this initiative—helping to reduce costs for consumers and support RPU's forward-thinking approach to energy management.

Healthcare costs are a growing concern for families across Minnesota. One way we can provide some relief is to exempt more essential medical items from sales taxes. I presented a bill to the taxes committee this week that does just that!
