Invasion USA - in 4K! This is one heck of a set, with six new interviews and more from the archives, plus three commentaries, including one from me, where I dive into the film's wildest production stories. Now available from Vinegar Syndrome:
For a period in the mid-1980s, Cassandra Peterson (Elvira) lived in a house between Paul Reubens' (Pee-wee) and John Paragon's (Jambi the Genie), and across the street from Vincent Price.
There was probably never a better road on which to trick-or-treat.
RIP, Mr. Reubens.

Been a while since I posted one of these lists, but Tubi & Pluto currently have the biggest selection of Golan-Globus classics I've ever seen up all at once.
Here are more than 50 (!) Cannon movies you can stream NOW, for FREE, in the US:
Oh, nothing, just Natasha Lyonne making an inauspicious, early-career appearance in a Cannon movie, playing a little girl who gets KTFO'd by the star of the Beastmaster trilogy:
Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steve Seagal offer differing opinions on the merits of male nudity, from a May 1988 profile of Hollywood's new crop of action stars:
In 1986, Mattel advertised a contest with the grand prize being a role in Cannon's Masters of the Universe movie. This wasn't just a background role -- the little boy who won was covered in makeup and prosthetics and became Skeletor's pint-size servant, "Pigboy."
Jean-Claude Van Damme, promoting Cyborg in the pages of Prevue magazine, being asked to share his thoughts on several of his fellow martial arts movie stars:
Charles Bronson's Take Pride in America endorsement wasn't just one of the best TV commercials ever made, but a print campaign that intimidated litterers from newspapers all over the United States. Happy Earth Day!

A new year, and a new list of Golan-Globus goodness that you can stream, right now, for FREE, if you're in the United States. Now featuring Roku! (Tubi is still king, but there are some exclusive titles on each of these platforms.)
Albert Pyun was an artist who could conjure magic from the most limited of resources -- whose imagination couldn't be constrained by the boundaries of budget.
Rest in peace to a singular cinematic visionary.
In 1984, Cannon acquired the movie rights to the most patriotic of superheroes, Captain America. How did they approach the material? By hiring the British director of the Death Wish series, who'd never read the comic before.
Michael Winner's Captain America, a thread. (1)
Cannon+ may not be a thing, but here is a list of movies you CAN currently stream on US platforms, many of them for free.
Streaming Cannon, March 2021 Edition:
Masters of the Universe (1987) hadn't started filming yet, but Cannon needed something to show off at AFM in 1986... so they cut together some He-Man toy commercials with Dolph Lundgren publicity photos and set it to the Neverending Story soundtrack.

For Lifeforce (1985), Nick Maley's team created the most complex animatronic ever seen on the silver screen, requiring 23 puppeteers and three computers to operate. The movie's makeup/SFX should've earned an Oscar nom, but Cannon didn't bother to campaign after the movie flopped.
Action fans grab your sweethearts, because Cannon unleashed their most romantic of movies on Valentine's Day in 1986: The Delta Force, starring Chuck Norris and Lee Marvin.
Here's a vintage TV spot for the film:
Rest in peace, painter Enzo Sciotti. His Italian horror posters are probably his most famous works, but he also made many, many glorious VHS covers for European releases of Cannon films.
For Lee Marvin's 100th birthday, here is his impression of Menahem Golan pitching him Cannon's unmade "Pinocchio the Robot" over dinner with Placido Domingo.
After years of missed connections, I finally welcomed this little fella into my family. (Countertop store display for the VHS of American Ninja 2: The Confrontation.)
Breakin' turns 40 (!) this week, so join me in celebrating as I break out some goodies from the archive. Here's a video store mobile celebrating the movie's MGM/UA VHS release:
Happy 95th birthday to the wildly prolific James Hong, who, among his hundreds of screen appearances, once tried unsuccessfully to exorcise the spirit of an evil ninja out of Lucinda Dickey.
I want to live in whatever multiverse where Pixar was a low-budget direct-to-video production company and Robert Z'Dar got to play a live-action Buzz Lightyear.
It's Christmas Eve, 1987. You're at the mall doing last-minute Christmas shopping and all they have left at K·B Toys are these heavily-discounted Over the Top action figures. Which one do you buy for your kid?
This is exciting restoration news: a rare leading role for Steve James, which I’ve only seen as a digital rip of a 34-year-old VHS release. So happy that efforts were made to preserve this one.
RIVERBEND starring the late Steve James and directed by Sam Firstenberg will be screened next Saturday January 27th at the Denton Black Film Festival in north Texas. It’s sourced from a digital restoration of the only known film print and Firstenberg is scheduled to attend.
These early sketches made use of some cool Earth settings. While, yes, it was a cost-cutting move, the idea to set the movie on Earth rather than Eternia was part of the plan from very early on...
Now watching A Christmas Carol (1984) and, I’ll tell you what, not a single one of my family members even pretended to be interested when I explained how Frank Finlay filmed his roles in both this and Lifeforce within just a few weeks of each other.
This two-sided pin-up poster came in an issue of the German teenybopper magazine, Bravo. A tough choice needed to be made. Which side are you hanging on your wall?
When Menahem first tried to get into movies, he called Roger Corman, who took him under his wing — he started as Roger’s driver, while his wife assisted with makeup. (1)
Happy 35th anniversary to Cannon’s Masters of the Universe! Here are some early concept sketches from William Stout and Moebius, including one for She-Ra — who wound up not being used in the movie.
RIP Mark Margolis, who once tried to blow up Chuck Norris in either Delta Force 2: The Colombian Connection or Delta Force 2: Operation Stranglehold, depending on who you ask.
Concept art for Skeletor's invasion of Earth -- which, despite a smaller army being involved, kind of resembles what we ultimately saw in the final movie a few years later.
This is horrifying and heartbreaking. Albert Pyun, the incredibly talented filmmaker who's suffered from dementia for years, left his home on foot today without a phone or water. He's apparently been reported missing to Las Vegas police. I hope he's found safe.
Cannon, circa 1986: "No Masters of the Universe footage to show prospective buyers? No problem! Here's some clips from the toy commercials cut together with a couple Dolph Lundgren headshots."
Mickey Rourke had these sunglasses custom-made for his Barfly character and insisted that he wear them throughout the film. Director Barbet Schroeder put his foot down and, after an argument, compromised to ask Bukowski to write in a line so he could briefly put them on.
For Invasion USA's climactic showdown in downtown Atlanta, Cannon rented six tanks, 16 jeeps, and three APCs from the Georgia National Guard.
The tanks cost them $344.50 per day, plus $50 for each driver and an additional $11 per mile after the first 20 miles.
