Snow Removal 101: This is a snow blower. With the snow totals we've seen in the Sierra, this equipment becomes crucial for reopening highways because you have to blow feet of snow as far off the lanes as possible. As you can see, they move at a glacial speed.

Highway 89 around Emerald Bay remains closed this morning, but our crews continue to dig away at it. Downed trees, fallen boulders and debris have blocked the highway in several locations, in addition to the sizeable snow accumulation.
