The Free Speech Movement in Berkeley began on Oct. 1, 1964 when Jack Weinberg was arrested for sitting at a table in Sproul Plaza supporting the Congress of Racial Equality. 3,000 students surrounded the police car. A 32-hour stand-off ensued, people speaking from the car's roof.

Varsity Crew team arrived home to this tumultuous reception after winning Olympic Gold for the United States in Amsterdam. The streets of Berkeley were completely mobbed with people as the Olympic champions drove from the train station to campus.
