On September 11, 2001, Brent Woodall @Cal Class of 1993, died at the World Trade Center. Brent was a tight end on Cal's Citrus Bowl team, pitched in the 1992 College World Series & graduated from Haas Business School. Brent's wife Tracy give birth to their daughter in April 2002.

On Sept. 30, 1945, @Cal 's California Law Review published an article by Pauli Murray, LL.M. 1945, "The Right to Equal Opportunity in Employment." It was the first article by a Black woman ever published in a US Law Review & the first to discuss sex discrimination in employment.

When Carol Greider was a child, dyslexia made it difficult for her to read & spell. Put into remedial classes, she thought she “was stupid.” She was rejected by 11 graduate schools for low GRE scores, but accepted at @Cal . In 2009 she won the Nobel Prize. #DyslexiaAwarenessMonth

Joe Roth, the only @CalFootball player ever to have his jersey retired, was born May 29, 1955. A brilliant quarterback & top NFL prospect, Joe was diagnosed with terminal melanoma during his senior year at @Cal . He played out the season with almost unimaginable courage & grace.

My brother, David Franklin Campbell, 60, of Sebring, Florida, went to be with the Lord at 2:09 p.m. (ET) today. When you read the number of people who died today of COVID in Florida, or nationwide, think of Dave. He was NOT a number. He was my brother. I will miss him every day.

Chang-Lin Tien, beloved @UCBerkeley Chancellor (1990-1997) was born July 24, 1935. An immigrant from China, Tien earned a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Princeton & became a @Cal professor in 1959. He was the first Asian American to lead a major American university.

Joe Roth, Class of 1977, @Cal quarterback and top NFL prospect, died at his apartment in Berkeley on February 19, 1977, after a valiant struggle against melanoma. He had played much of his senior season knowing he was terminally ill. He was 21 years old.

George Dantzig, PhD 1946, was born Nov. 8, 1914. A brilliant mathematician, he is also known for arriving late to class at @Cal in 1939, seeing two famous unsolved statistics questions the professor had written on the board and, thinking they were homework, solving them.

Ed Roberts, @Cal BA 1964, MA 1966, was born January 23, 1939. The first severely disabled student ever admitted to Cal, Roberts led a campaign demanding equal access and civil rights, first at Cal, then nationwide & became known as the "Father of the Independent Living Movement."

The Free Speech Movement in Berkeley began on Oct. 1, 1964 when Jack Weinberg was arrested for sitting at a table in Sproul Plaza supporting the Congress of Racial Equality. 3,000 students surrounded the police car. A 32-hour stand-off ensued, people speaking from the car's roof.

On September 11, 2001, Brent Woodall @Cal Class of 1993, died at the World Trade Center. Brent was a tight end on Cal's Citrus Bowl team, pitched in the 1992 College World Series & graduated from Haas Business School. Brent's wife Tracy give birth to their daughter in April 2002.

Happy Birthday to Chris Pine, Class of 2002. At @Cal , he performed in plays by Euripides & Shakespeare at Zellerbach Hall. His first film role was in Princess Diaries 2 (2004). Pine is best known for playing Captain Kirk in recent Star Trek films and Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman.

Before inexpensive ballpoint pens were developed, students required a steady supply of ink for their fountain pens to take notes in class. From 1925 to the 1950s the ASUC provided free ink, including from this ink fountain outside Stephens Hall (then @Cal 's Student Union).

Gregory Peck, @Cal Class of 1938, was born April 5, 1916. He arrived in Berkeley as a pre-med student, but discovered his love of acting in the drama club. Peck became one of Hollywood's best actors in the 1940s & 1950s, winning an Oscar in 1962 for "To Kill a Mockingbird."

Walter Gordon, BA 1918, JD 1922, born Oct. 10, 1894, was @CalFootball 's first Black player, first All-American & first Black assistant coach (1922-43), State boxing & wrestling champion & Cal's first Black law grad. He became Governor of the Virgin Islands & a federal judge.

On August 30, 1928, the @Cal Varsity Crew team arrived home to this tumultuous reception after winning Olympic Gold for the United States in Amsterdam. The streets of Berkeley were completely mobbed with people as the Olympic champions drove from the train station to campus.
