Unmasked lady next to me on plane.. starts making small talk..
Me: excuse me.. can you not talk to me unmasked on this plane.. I have lupus and we’re in a pandemic
Thanks
She turned her whole body towards the isle 😂🤣😂
Me: thank you so much.. ❤️😴
My mama went to prison when I was 5.. The whole time my daddy told us she was in the hospital. He made sure we visited her every weekend. I have 10 before I realized the hospital was a prison. He said he told us that because he didn’t want us to think less of her. Stand up guy 🤞🏿
Well guys... I’m officially Dr. Coomer and my daddy cried like a baby...
Dr. Cagney Elayna Coomer...
Imagine that.. oh wait we did and look at us now ✊🏿
Dr. Cagney Elayna Coomer
First black woman to receive a PhD in the department of biology at UK.
Just wanted to fully introduce myself. I break barriers.. and this only the beginning ✌🏿
One time we recruited all the women mechanics in our city and spent the day teaching 200+ girls how to change oil, the tires and the spark plugs on cars. We used cars of single mothers to help them get free car maintenance 😁
@NerdsquadI
The Assistant Dean of the Graduate told me I’m the first black woman to get a PhD from the department of Biology at UK.. even though my department doesn’t think that’s an accomplishment. My community is extremely proud. And I’m honored to make them proud. ✊🏿
So the science teacher at an elementary school I used to volunteer at asked the 5th graders to draw a picture of a scientist and one girl drew me!! Y’all see my fish in the background..! I love it!
So my mom is a former drug addict (she’s been clean 20 years).. she had a mini stroke at work a few weeks ago and no one helped her. When she came back to work she asked her desk mate why she didn’t help her. She told her that she thought she had relapsed
#BlackinCMDBio
roll call..!!
My name is Dr. Cagney Coomer. I just received my PhD from the University of Kentucky where I studied retinal development and regeneration.. now I’m in my postdoc at Dartmouth College where I’ll be optimizing techniques for studying neural circuits
@Facetious_Dem
@uche_blackstock
Why would be upset? He was doing the best he could, trying to protect us and make sure we still had a solid relationship with our mother. She made a mistake and he didn’t hold it against her. He held her down until she touched down.. I have nothing but respect for him
@ValerieforCT
Personally I think people get caught up in trying to diversify a place before making sure it’s an inclusive space to bring a diverse group into first. Who wants to work in an environment they don’t feel wanted or welcome.. 😫 blah..
And was high at her desk. So instead of calling 911... as my moms head bobbed up and down... she called HR and told HR they need to look into her drug history and possibly drug test her because she was at work high... 😳😳 her desk mate is white
I am extremely excited and proud to share my first story as PhD..!!
trans-Tango is a powerful genetic approach for revealing, monitoring and manipulating neural circuits!!
Please enjoy and SHARE!!!!

I got a question...
How many publications did you have at the end of your PhD? And how competitive did it make you for a post doc?
Currently: one first author 2018
Second first heading to publication in 2/3 weeks
@EstOdek
Hey!! I’m Cagney Coomer.. I’m a PhD candidate at
@universityofky
in Molecular, Cellular and Dev biology..! Focus retinal development and regeneration.. I’m also the founder of a STEM nonprofit for girls of color called
@NerdsquadI
...!!
Non POC mentors..
When giving advice to your POC trainees… ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND..
We cannot navigate in the world the same way you do…
That’s not a negative towards you.. it’s a fact.. and should always be kept in mind when mentoring us.
Last night was a movie!! No literally.. but also figuratively.. what amazing feeling.. to loved and cherished so richly.. I am beyond honored to be chosen to do life with you. Thank you for making me feel so special😭😭😍😍 I love you beyond words

Idk about other people.. when I was old enough to realize the truth, he didn’t lie to me. He answered my questions and held me when I needed to cry.
When I was 5, I really didn’t need to know my mother was in prison.
It’s BIN week.. lemme get in on the roll call.. Cagney Coomer here.. I’m a postdoc at
@GeiselMed
at Dartmouth College. I’m working on optimizing a genetic based transsynaptic tracing in the zebrafish CNS.

Two years ago today.. I walked into Remsen Hall on my first day as postdoc.. I was terrified.. like what if I’m not good at this.. what if my skills don’t translate.. what if.. so much doubt.. but two years later and I’d say I’m doing pretty good.. cheers to year 3 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
It’s
@BlackInNeuro
week..!! Shout to the founders of black in neuro for their amazing work. My name is Dr. Cagney Coomer. I’m a 1st year post doc at Geisel school of Medicine at Dartmouth College. I study synaptic tracing techniques.!

I think mentoring takes finesse. What worked for one student doesn’t always work for the next. You have to meet your mentee where they are and elevate them from there and honestly it takes growth, self reflection and a great deal of empathy to be a good mentor. 🤷🏾♀️
The tiny human went to school as a scientist today.. she said this her scientist thinking face.. only scientists make this face..
I hope all you brilliant scientists out there got your duck lips together 😂😂😂🥰❤️
Guess whose boss is a recovering alcoholic and firing said desk mate... 🤷🏾♀️
Really never know a person’s story and people should be much kinder because accountability and consequences are new normal friends..
Also don’t ever play with my mama FYT
I am honored to selected and to represent what the HHMI envisions for the future of science.. I want to thank
@marnieeh
for being a dope mentor, for believing in me fiercely, for schooling me, hearing me and seeing me.. it’s up and it’s stuck now 😜
In case you missed my talk.. im headed to
@dartmouth
to work under
@marnieeh
and have new scientific adventures and do new outreach..!! I’m so excited..!!
I wish people didn’t question my commitment to my bench work just bc I do outreach too. I am a dedicated scientist and science communicator while also doing cool ass science outreach. Folks be acting hella funny when I’m doing the work but be front and center when it’s successful
Y’all… My mama full out cried/shouted in the streets when she saw The NY Times ad.. 😭😭😭
She said every battle prepared you for this journey..
She will never understand how full her joy makes my heart..
My plan is to show you that I understand ~ Dear Mama 🤞🏿
Called my undergrad Eve this morning and screamed in the phone.
CONGRATS ON YOUR FIRST PAPER BEING ACCEPTED..!!
She screamed back.
CONGRATS ON YOUR PAPER BEING ACCEPTED..!!
Best moment 😍🤓
#sciencelove
Tomorrow all the fourth graders at Harrison Elementary will receive their TAP IN science kits and experiment manual.. Each kit contains all the materials you need to TAP into your inner scientist. Including a lab coat, beakers, fold scope and lab notebook!
#TAPINPROJECT
Now I haven’t gotten my science into development yet.. but my face is in there!! ❤️✊🏿slinging this science and outreach across the world or whatever 😜😁
The first professor to tell me I can be a scientist... don’t ever let anyone tell you anything negative about community college.. it laid the foundation and supported me every step of the way
I’m so excited to be selected as one of this years TPDA awardees..!! Thank you to
@SfNtweets
for this honor. I can’t wait to share my science and network at my first Sfn conference 😁😁
Yesterday I became the first Dr. in my family
Meanwhile... Breonna Taylor still hasn’t received justice and that’s unacceptable
#JusticeforBreonnaTalyor
Second week of grad school.. a certain professor in the department told me I picked the right PI because I was going to need my hand held as a response to me saying I wasn’t sure what I wanted my thesis project to be yet.. THE SECOND WEEK OF GRAD SCHOOL…
@Ti_Enjoli
!!! I've heard faculty complain about graduate students not being up to date in field. EXCUSE ME? They just started in that lab and you expect them to know everything and start completing experiment for a paper you are trying to push out. 🙄
I’m so excited to announce that I will be keynote speaker at the Bluegrass Community and Technical College’s Women in Science month celebration! Please come and let me talk nerdy to you and share my journey and my cool ass science!
@bluegrassctc
Being the only one in the room is hard as an adult.. I can’t imagine what it’s like at 7… it’s a honor to come hold space with the kid and be representation for her and her class.. we were all smiles today.. specially when I told her class that we were best friends 😁😍🥰
Why in the world would I align myself with a syndrome that completely ignores the fact that the system wasn’t designed for me so of course I don’t fit in.. that’s not my problem.. that’s the systems problem and I’m NOT internalizing that mess 🤷🏾♀️🥴😮💨
Things will never be the same yea
Swear I thought they'd never change
Man my life has been so awesome
Ever since I bloomed out like cherry blossom 😜 Dr. Coomer has been hooded 🤞🏿❤️

Y’all... I have the best family... my mama put together this puzzle, framed it and sent it to me... isn’t it wonderful...
Yes I cried like a baby... duh 🤣😭🤣
Congrats to Cagney Coomer

Today my mama stood in front of a federal judge and got 100% of her rights back, paid off her restitution and closed a chapter from the past. I’m so proud of her. People make mistakes and they should be given the chance to make amends and move forward with their lives.
#BlackinCMDBio
week day 6 is all about that
#Blackinadvocacy
work.!
I started a nonprofit 9 years ago called
@NerdsquadI
.. we mentor, inspire and engage black and brown girls interested in stem.. together with these girls we design and develop culturally relevant stem
@RogersLabUCD
She didn’t apologize but she said she felt bad... which is not the same. I think she should be fired personally... I been calling the main office all day
Last Saturday.. my big brother was hit twice in the back by stray bullets while he walked to a taco truck. I’ve been holding my breath for days bc we didn’t know how bad the damage was. But yesterday he walked to the bathroom and I can finally breathe. Life is crazy 😭
@ImprovNutrition
Was diagnosed 12 years ago. My mom also has it. It’s scary at first but once you learn to listen to your body it’s not as scary. If you ever need to vent, ask questions or whatever feel free to reach out. I remember how I felt when I first found out… 😔🥰
Trainees aren’t one size fits all
So mentoring strategies can’t be one size fits all..
You cannot promote diversity and think you can do things the way you’ve always done them 😂🤣😂
That’s insane..
Liiisssttteeennnn.... WE WORKED SOOO FREAKING HARD FOR THIS PAPER..!! I am extremely proud and honored to have been apart of this teamwork..!!!
@jessdbills
@KaylaTitialii
@_Always_Rebecca
and Laura CONGRATS LADIES..!!! And thank you!!
Our paper is out today! Congratulations to first author

and all the members of the Morris lab whose hard work went into this study! Her9/Hes4 is required for retinal photoreceptor development, maintenance, and survival
Happy Mother’s Day to my daddy... thank you for wearing all the hats and playing both roles... who I am today is because you never give on us.
We love you
