Read the Full Report here: #Land has been used to create an asymmetry of power in the #Northern and #Eastern regions for over three decades, and there is a growing trend of intrusive methods being employed in these regions, triggering #fear amongst local communities. The objective of this report is to shed light on the multifaceted role of the #State and non-state authorities in issues around land ownership, use, and access, and explore how local communities respond to this oppression. It highlights how the State co-opts legislature, Government agencies, the military, and private corporations, creating long-term consequences for communities and for the nation to achieve a successful post-conflict society. CPA recognises a series of key interrelated trends between the multitude of rights infringements, i.e. #ethnonationalism, continued Government authority intervention, #militaryexpansion, and the profit-making objectives of private entities.

Although the law is very clear in terms of what can be provided to former heads of state as entitlements upon retirement, in practice, the law has been interpreted “very freely,” @bfonseka | @TheMorningLK

How do you have a system that works for the people, works for the citizen. And I think, over the years, over the decades, what we’ve seen is some institutions have been prone to pressure interference. @bfonseka | @NewsfirstSL

Many of us have been saying, set up a prosecutor’s office, an independent prosecutor’s office that is purely focused on prosecutions. And that call became louder and louder with the economic crisis where people said, we are now aware that there is so much corruption, economic crimes that have happened that requires people to look into it to see if there’s enough to prosecute. @bfonseka | @NewsfirstSL

Projects that ignore due process harm ecosystems and communities reliant on the land. Weak environmental oversight and exclusion of local voices enable harmful developments without accountability. For sustainable economic growth and environmental preservation, strict adherence to environmental standards and inclusion of local voices in planning are essential.

Protecting civil liberties starts with addressing the misuse of laws like the PTA, ICCPR Act, and other emergency regulations. The abuse of these laws and regulations limits fundamental freedoms. Such draconian laws should be repealed and replaced with a rights-based approach in the criminal justice system.

In times of economic crisis, equality should play a key role in Sri Lanka’s recovery. Many communities struggle to access basic needs like healthcare, education, clean water, shelter, food, and work. Ensuring socio-economic rights and stronger social protections is essential to promote fairness and dignity for all.
