Unfortunately as a socialist and a feminist I had no option but to vote against the Gender Recognition Reform Bill today. I supported it at Stage 1 as like so many others I agree this process should be reformed.
Not unsurprisingly the First Minister when asked about Scotland’s NHS spent most of the answer talking about England. This isn’t serious governance
#FMQs
Regardless of where you stand in this debate there is nothing offensive or provocative about such a scarf. This should not have happened. I will be asking why this was allowed.
I share the concerns of many regarding reports people have been arrested for expressing their views in support of a republic. Everyone has the right to express their opinions peacefully, this sets a dangerous precedent. I will be raising my concerns when Parliament reconvenes.
I will be putting questions to the Presiding Officer regarding the decision to increase limitations on protest outside the Parliament. There is no clear justification for this and I view it as a threat to peaceful democratic expression.
Sadly the way this bill has been forced through by the SNP and Greens will lead to poor legislation and I fear it has damaged women’s rights in Scotland. There was a working compromise available to us, it was not agreed to by the Government.
The Scottish Parliament has had responsibility over some social security benefits for years and yet there is still no functioning IT system.
The SNP wonder why most people don’t want to separate from the rest of the UK? Well it’s things like this that stick in their mind.
However, despite many reasonable attempts by party colleagues and others to amend this bill in order to protect single sex spaces for women and to prevent the law being open to exploitation the Government refused to countenance any fair reform at all.
I have written to
@POScotParl
about the reported removal of a member of the public from the Equalities, Human Rights and Civil Justice Committee today.
750,000 Scots waiting for treatment, the worst ever recorded A&E waiting times in Scotland. The SNP have been in power for 15 years - this is their legacy

It was an honour to serve on the

Health Committee. I will continue to strive to fight health inequalities.
Unfortunately in politics taking a principled position has its consequences. I look forward to helping my party fight against injustice and poverty in other ways
There have been a number of attempts to clarify these issues and yet the Government have repeatedly sought to narrow the debate. That hasn’t helped anyone and now we are left with policies the FM cannot understand.
Does Scotland’s First Minister believe all trans women are women?
Scottish Gov has just implemented an effective ban on trans prisoners who’ve committed sexual & violent crimes against women being moved to a women-only prison.
@itvnews
Utterly heartbreaking hearing the Italian boxer Angela Carini in the mixed zone. Blood on her shorts.
Broke down in tears as she explained that she had never been hit so hard before.
Added that she came her to honour her father, that she was a warrior, but had to stop.
It’s clear following today’s statement that those who had serious concerns about the competence of the
#GRRBill
were correct
As a result we are a year later without any progress, in large part because the Scottish Government refused to listen to women who didn’t agree with them
I will be handing this over to charity. It is completely inappropriate when carers are not even being given the £15 an hour they deserve, not to mention the number of people suffering due to

A shoddy and shameful front page from The Telegraph. There are people dying every hour of every day and some sections of the press are engaging in blatant Islamophobia over what amounts to a very small contribution to a very deserving cause.

Thatcher tore the heart out of Scotland and many other places in order to build an economy so imbalanced that we still see the ripples of her regressive policies today.
I meet constituents regularly who continue to bear the brunt of her ‘greed is good’ mentality.
Never again.
During a cost of living crisis the SNP/Greens have decided to hold yet another debate on independence. People across the country have had enough of this government ignoring the wolf at the door. As you will hear, they were not happy that I and others were pointing this out.
The members of Islington North CLP should have the right to select their candidate for Westminster just as any other CLP should. Blocking
@jeremycorbyn
is unjust and sends the wrong message to the public about our priorities going into a General Election.
I never imagined I would be given this privilege. To represent my community, my region, and my party is an incredible honour and I will not let you down.
I am going to Holyrood to put power back in your hands.

I still cannot understand how MSPs that represent former mining areas could have voted against compensation for the miners that were wrongly convicted. These people were politically targeted and their lives ruined in some cases. A pardon is welcome, but it is not nearly enough.
I used my first ever speech in
@ScotParl
to call for serious action on carers' pay. Alongside others they have kept our country going during this pandemic. We owe them a lot more than a pay rise but it will do a good deal to show our appreciation and it is long overdue

I am sorry to hear reports of Britain First campaigning on the streets of Troon. This is a fascist party who are only here to stir up trouble. I am sure the people of Ayrshire will reject their nonsense resoundingly. There is no place for racism here.
We’ll happily take the investment in South Scotland as long as it provides local jobs with well established standards for workers. We can’t keep turning away serious investment in Scottish tourism. This is short sighted.

I’m at the

In East Ayrshire 27.3% (a 2.9% increase since 2015) of kids are now living in poverty, one of the highest levels across Scotland, whereas in South Ayrshire the rate is 24.8% (a 2.2% increase since 2015). In every single local authority across Scotland the rate has increased.
Let’s focus less on flags and more on the message. Investment, rebuilding our country, and leading the way on vaccinations. On all points the SNP are failing terribly.
I’m pleased to be leading for

Today I asked
@scotgov
why so many young people referred to CAMHS (child and adolescent mental health services) are still rejected three years after a damning report concluded rejected referrals must end. Sadly, as expected, there wasn't much of an answer.
Is this the same Douglas Ross who said abolishing the top rate of tax was right? Until he decided it wasn’t. Who backed Johnson to the hilt, then betrayed him, then backed him…then betrayed him again. Who said Truss was a great PM, then welcomed her resignation the same week?
Today I was proud to vote for the Miners’ Strike (Pardons) (Scotland) Bill. Finally so many miners who were targeted and wrongfully convicted have been exonerated.
A fantastic day for the workers movement and all the families of those affected. It has been unanimously passed.

@AnasSarwar
is correct. Voters are not worried about the date of another referendum, they are worried about their jobs and their children’s future

Many of my constituents want to take the train but it simply is costing them a lot more than driving. We can make all the environmental cases in the world but if ordinary people are out of pocket every single time then then people will continue to drive.

Fascinating watching Andy Burnham continue his attacks on Scotland this morning, clearly calculating that his path to the Labour leadership depends on him being more of an English nationalist than Johnson or Starmer.

In the long run handing over parts of our NHS to the private sector will cost more, lead to a service focused on the bottom line not the patients, and we will struggle to ever get it back.

But this isn’t just about him. We have no confidence in this SNP Government.
I have written to the Chief Exec of

Fairly incredible that Humza Yousaf is Sturgeon’s chosen successor. Only a week or so ago it was looking unlikely he could hang on as Health Secretary

We have a Scottish Government where very little gets done and a First Minister who scoffs at any dissent as being anti-Scotland, that has always been counter productive and has damaged the country. Let’s hope any successor will reflect on those failings

Social care is a key responsibility of a principled society. As a socialist I believe that is best delivered in the public sector by well paid and valued carers. It’s an ideal for now, but one we must work towards without fear of Tory criticism, who never put people before profit
I think if you imagine this is why people in parts of South Scotland want to remain in a union with family, friends, and colleagues across the UK then you need to spend more time in this great part of our country.
Ash Regan wants to "look into" ensuring people in the Borders can watch STV rather than ITV because she believes there may be a correlation between watching ITV Border and voting patterns (ie electing Tories), she tells the SNP's SNP hustings in Dumfries.
