Check out our new paper on the synthesis of spirooxindoles (and a few other azacycles) using an acetylene surrogate. We can also derivative the resulting alkene in a few interesting ways. It was amazing to work with Xavier and Bianca on this project!

@Longlarf I would refer to this as a parallel kinetic resolution. Each enantiomer in this case goes to a unique product.

Who knew the old sodium hydride + methyl iodide could be improved upon! This is a particularly nice alkylation strategy for more sensitive substrates. I love to see methods to improve upon classically "simple" transformations.

Oxygen walking seems pretty sweet to access these C-3 oxygenated pyridines. It's also pretty cool to see the formation of a Dewar-type lactam from the C-2 byproduct. Another banger from the Qin group.

@awhspeed Iā€™m personally a huge fan of any of Heathcockā€™s biomimetic daphniphyllum alkaloids syntheses. Most of the steps arenā€™t too crazy leading up to the cascade and really highlight Heathcockā€™s foresight.

@aplooby28 I'm not sure how good the Wolff rearrangement d.r. would be, but it could a reasonably cheap way to access this compound.
