I started drumming in 1989(or 88?). My best friend & I had no musical skills, we both wanted to sing in our new band but I picked the short straw & lost. So I had to try to drum. Still trying! winning, losing, they’re all just doors you pass through, then you take it from there
I met Steve Albini probably 15 years ago in the UK at ATP, a big festival with a ton of sick bands. An effect pedal of ours had broken and Steve appeared at our door with a little tool kit, announced he was here to fix the pedal and quickly, successfully, went to work
on our first Lightning Bolt US tour in 1997 we played a little wooden stage outside a Church’s Chicken in Kerrville Texas. Two kids showed up and an old guy walked out of the woods and said “I haven’t seen playing like that since Jimi Hendrix”. Then he walked back into the woods
Fugazi ethics made it so Lightning Bolt didn’t have any tshirts to sell for the first 20 years
And now it’s Fugazis fault that I can’t stop making tshirts
Lightning Bolt shows are never easy . if it starts feeling easy I push harder, make it more difficult , louder, faster, more draining. The point is to give everything every time. Music is the delivery system, but the goal is both self discovery and self annihilation
Deerhoof did a bunch of records under the band name “Lightning Bolt”, any of these are the best place to start they really put the regular DH albums to shame
here’s two minutes cut out of the middle of a raggedy Nothing Compares 2 U take . Nothing compares to the power of Sinéad, I’m just riffing on the emotional energy of it . Full 8 messy minutes are up on YouTube and insta. ❤️Rest in a well earned peace Sinéad O’Conner
for the Lightning Bolt fans this is the building we recorded all of Hypermagic Mountain and Earthly Delights in plus the Oblivion Hunter home recordings, that top floor was ours, band zone was in the back. Fire Marshall finally kicked me out in 2016
can people stop calling us a math rock band we’ve got less math than Bob Dylan for Christ’s sake what the fuck we’re a goddamn gym rock band or a rock climbing band, math rock my ass you fucking dumbasses
fucking hell Gabe Serbian from The Locust has passed. We toured with them years ago and Gabe was a fucking beast. Dude could make a blast beat swing while hitting as hard as a truck. Unique. One of the best I’ve ever scene & a good guy. Terrible news. ❤️ to his friends & family
I’ve read a couple reviews of our new record that suggest this is Lightning Bolts last record. I have no idea why. Guys, I had a kid, I didn’t die. My kid showed up 3 years ago, and we still made a record. We’re not done shredding your reality yet , not even close
This fest in Germany wants us to sign a form saying if we break 99 decibels we’ll pay a €10000 fine. My drums with no amplification are 105. Maybe it’s a movie night
about to play our first Lightning Bolt show in a 2+ years. the goal is merely death and rebirth and the multiple levels of ecstasy and entropy in between those two points.
…or really the goal is just to not vomit in my mask

“There’s one kid with a big thing on his head and he wouldn’t stop drumming” — hahaha yup. And he wouldn’t stop drumming for thirty more years you fuckers hahaha . One year later Lightning Bolt is born

May 2, 1993, "an estimated 200 to 300 college students" threw a party in the abandoned railroad tunnel under the East Side of Providence. Here is documentary video (by
@RISD
film students) of the subsequent attempts of police trying to arrest partygoers, & the ensuing riot.
BG came over the other day to survey the scene for a return to jamming , our first reunion after a 16 month pandemic break , and I had to break it to him that I’d rented out his Lightning Bolt bass rig real estate to LEGOCITY
By the end of tonight’s Lightning bolt show I got to the next level . I pushed as hard as I possibly could , and I can push hard. Portals were opened . I’m happy about that
I occasionally get the “why do you hit so hard” question in relation to drumming and broken drumsticks and to that I say why love so hard or cry so hard or run so hard, music is important to me but drumming is a dance and I dance like I mean it
To all the “fans” who stole my sticks off the stage at
@whelanslive
in Dublin last night a special FUCK YOU. you dumbass fucks I use those every night, I NEED those every night, I’m working and those are my TOOLS. i can’t even buy that kind of stick anymore.

I threw a 7 minute plus Pus Wandering up on my Instagram if you’re into that kinda thing , you can get there through my profile link if profile links are a thing you do
Twenty years ago the Station fire killed 100 people in RI during a Great White show. maybe a decade ago Lightning Bolt was talking to a guy working at a drum shop in Minneapolis. When he heard where we were from he went quiet, then said, “I was Great White’s drummer that night”
Lightning Bolt takes returns on all hearing damage such as tinnitus acquired during our shows; mail the ringing to us in an envelope(filter) to the pobox found in LB LPs
music making for me used to be powered by magic, real magic. I would feel it, doors to unknown worlds just popping open all around. The making is still awesome now, but the real magic has become more illusive. I get glimpses through thick paned windows; it’s close, it’s close
the true impetus behind these drum videos is for me to pull out various old ill fitted shirts I find in neglected boxes in my studio and see if I’ll have an allergic reaction to them
There’s a 15 minute version of this on my YouTube —->
prepping for LB tour trying to sweat off 2 years of covid calcification that aged me like 6 years on top of being a parent which has aged me like 10 years over the course of 5 years and what does that add up to I don’t even care which is why we’re definitely not a math rock band
a touching article about Lightning Bolts album Ride the Skies which came out apparently 20 years ago this month via
@stereogum
both joyful and nostalgic to read. I miss being a new & mysterious band, those are two attributes that are hard to improve on
I get so many suggestions on Instagram of drummers doing some little trick for 20 seconds and I’m like, who the fuck cares what 20 second thing somebody memorized? am I supposed to be impressed by your 20 second commitment to rhythm? The only commitment I see is to the algorithm
In light of this Jeff Bezos Amazon news, I’d like to take a minute to say that Lightning Bolt was also founded in 1994, and I too am so rich I can retire to sit on my mound of broken drumsticks, cracked CD cases and torn Tshirts; and dream of space
fffuuck what a tour day. BG started puking at 3am and puked every two hours the whole drive from SF to LA. The 5 is the shittiest drive in the fucking country even without constant puke in a bush breaks . Dude puked all evening but managed to stand up and play the set. True champ
“Band didn’t seem too fazed by it”. I’ve been doing my best to keep people safe at our shows for decades. I don’t see everything. Yes you screaming “your fans are assholes” did put me on high alert. But a couple bros being dicks in a room of over 500 isn’t “our fans are assholes”
the band didn’t even seem too fazed by it until i tapped
@CHIRPENDALE
on the arm to tell him this dude was being aggressive. thankfully he called this person out cuz i insisted they do something and good thing other folks backed me up.
the energy it takes to travel for hours, carry in a half ton of equipment, play drums as mercilessly as I can for an hour, hug a room full of people and then load all the shit out is like a nap on a calm lake compared to the energy it takes to be a dad. that shit is relentless
the slogan while on the Oops tour was “oops I went on this tour”. A lot of the characters had a few too many needs at times. Gabe though, he just came to fucking rock. In retrospect, like many intense tours, right when you get home you’re like; That fucking ruled. And it did
day one of a tour is weird. I can’t remember why we play the music we play. then we play & it’s purpose washes over me; it’s intense physicality. It’s cleansing power. & then I know why for the rest of the tour. But right before that first show, it’s like, wtf am i doing here
our son Rohan was originally going to be named Pharaoh after Pharaoh Sanders, the musical titan . We ended up keeping the Raoh or Roh in the name and shuffling it around. Mr Sanders ascended to the next level today, I’m going to put on Thembi and let him wash over and through
I lost all my money in crypto but not in the traditional sense I’ve just been wrapping my dollar bills around old bones and tossing them into a deep deep open grave in an ancient cemetery in hopes that the spirits will gift me magical powers. it’s not working
when I was 19 I reached out to Joe Biden multiple times. Crickets. I sent hundreds of crickets, thousands of crickets, millions and billions and trillions of crickets. All I heard was silence. I can only assume he killed the crickets. They’re so loud, they’re just so loud
Meet the new iPad Pro: the thinnest product we’ve ever created, the most advanced display we’ve ever produced, with the incredible power of the M4 chip. Just imagine all the things it’ll be used to create.
fuck we need to get into the studio ASAP to cover this new hit Lightning Bolt song somebody randomly posted on our
@AppleMusic
page . Yeah that’s WHAT WE GON, DO -
Any band with less than 3 members feels like a gimmick to me. Instead of having someone play 3 instruments at once, or worse yet running tracks, just get another person ...
