A very grim day at Cardiff University. 400 jobs to go. Whole departments (including modern languages, nursing, music, religion, ancient history) to be axed.

We could be entering a period where unemployment is the most pressing economic problem. Its costs are likely to outweigh those of higher inflation. Will we see a clamour for a furlough-type response from govt?

The Telegraph reveals Rachel Thieves and her senior civil servant husband are making £74K a year by renting out their two properties. Hard to know why she hates landlords. Thieves lives rent free in Downing Street and between them the couple earn in their day jobs over £200,000 a year. On her becoming Chancellor their 4-bed home in South London was rented out for £3,200 a month and husband was already renting out a two-bed flat in central London which he had since 2011 for £3,000 a month. All going rather well for the Reeves family. Not going badly for the bloke next door. Shame about the rest of us.
