"'It took each and every
@bronxdefenders
worker to make this contract possible,' said Babatunde Aremu, Chapter Chair of BxD Union."

On October 20, 2023, an overwhelming majority of The Bronx Defenders Union - UAW Local 2325 voted in favor of releasing the following statement in support of Palestinians.

We did it. We officially ratified our first contract w/
@BronxDefenders
by 165-36 votes & 79% union membership participation!
This moment carries extra significance for us as our organization’s founding in 1997 undermined
@alaa2325
bargaining efforts. That chapter is now CLOSED.
For 23 yrs, BXD has provided legal services to low income Bronx residents via a holistic defense approach. Today, BXD Staff have organized to form a union to ensure the continued effectiveness of that approach. We call on BXD management to recognize our Union

📢Press Release: The Bronx Defenders Union Announces Unlimited Unfair Labor Practice Strike Beginning Week of July 22, 2024 📢
🔗 Read the press release in full at
📷:
@MichaelLetwin
We’ll share more later, but, as a preview, we secured:
✅ 8-10% salary increases
✅ A 2-year contract term with the right to strike for wages after 1 year in line with
@alaa2325
sectoral bargaining
✅ A fair, flexible telecommuting policy
✅ A free speech provision (2/3)
Why have we authorized an unlimited strike beginning July 22nd? To win a fair contract: a contract that ensures we can effectively defend the people of the Bronx. Our demands address high attrition by providing for fair pay, a 1-year term, and sustainable working conditions.
The
@BronxDefenders
management is proposing an inflexible in-office policy...but our office is falling apart. BxD’s workers deserve better, and so do the people we defend. That's why we're holding a strike authorization vote: to redefine our working conditions.
The Bronx Defenders Union - UAW Local 2325 heeds the call of Palestinian trade unions (
@WorkersinPales1
) to end all complicity w/ Israeli occupation.
We do not consent!
📢 Our contract has been ratified by our membership!
Today, with 92% participation, 91% of voting members opted to ratify our 2024-26 contract with a 1-year salary reopener.
This contract is the result of the collective effort of all of our members. We're ready for 2025 & 2026!
As immigration attorneys, advocates, & social workers who represent & work with people incarcerated by ICE at the Hudson County Jail, we oppose the extension of the
@HudCoTweet
contract with ICE & demand
@TomDeGise
rescind the contract immediately.

On July 17, after seventeen hours of grueling negotiations, The Bronx Defenders management and collective bargaining committee reached a tentative agreement.
We saw historic wins in BxD Union’s second contract negotiations, including: (🧵1/)
The BxD CBC would like to thank our union siblings for the trust they placed in us through this process, our amazing
@alaa2325
organizers, and the community whose support bolstered our resolve. We couldn’t have done it without you all. Solidarity forever. Stay tuned—more to come!
🚨🚨BxD Union needs your help!🚨🚨
🔎Can you help us find these missing
@BronxDefenders
executives?
🤔They’ve been absent from almost every bargaining session since March, slowing down negotiations.
🗓️We bargain again on Mon. 6/10. Check back in then to see who shows up!
The
@bronxdefenders
is proposing a rigid hybrid work policy that would even require permission to work from home after spending the day at Rikers. We asked parents & caregivers how this change would affect their families. Their answers were clear: they will have to leave BxD.
👀The lowest-paid workers at
@BronxDefenders
earn $52,343 annually—almost $17,000 less than a living wage for NYC. Meanwhile, in 2022, BxD’s Executive Director compensation was $339,051.
🪧Join BxD Union tomorrow for our final practice picket before our strike deadline of Monday, July 22nd! The picket will take place during bargaining. Let's make sure BxD Management can hear us!
🗓️ Wednesday, July 17
⏰ 1 p.m.
📍 161st & Courtlandt
Yesterday, 100+ of our members attended our first open bargaining session. All of our missing execs showed up—two even stayed the whole time! But they didn’t show up with a salary counterproposal or revised hybrid work policy. Tick tock, mgmt. ⏰ 06/30 is rapidly approaching….
With 93% participation, 93% of our members authorized our Bargaining Committee to call for a strike if necessary. Today, we became the first of the alternate providers formed after '94 to authorize a strike in 30 years, since
@LASattysunited
went on strike under Guiliani.
A fair contract will allow
@BronxDefenders
to retain staff, leading to better representation for the people of the Bronx. Yet instead of coming to the table with reasonable offers, Management is prioritizing making plans that will draw out a strike. 🧵(1/4)
✊ In solidarity, community members have organized this hardship fund for BxD workers, which will make grants to address hardship caused by loss of income during any strike.

Please share widely!
🗓️ Mark your calendars! We're holding two practice pickets before our strike launches on July 22nd:
🪧Weds. 7/10, 1pm: Practice picket
🪧Weds. 7/17, 1pm: Practice picket
🪧Mon. 7/22, All day: Strike kickoff picket
Join us at 161st & Courtlandt and call on BxD to bargain fairly!
👀👀Did you know…
🔴BxD pays its workers less than other offices for the same work?
🔴And mgmt is proposing keeping salaries lower than other NYC PD offices for the coming year?
To invest in the Bx, BxD must invest in its workers. That's why we need a fair contract now!
Thanks to all who came through for our first practice picket yesterday! We hope to see y'all again next week for our final practice picket before our strike is set to start.
⏰ Tick tock...
On 7/22, BxD Union is set to go out on an Unfair Labor Practice strike, protesting the numerous ULPs committed by

☑️ Engaging in bad faith bargaining
☑️ Unilaterally changing employment terms & conditions
☑️ Retaliation
ONE YEAR ‼️
BxD delegates at the
@alaa2325
sectoral bargaining convention. A one year contract is a key demand in our ongoing contract negotiations, so we’ll align with our ALAA siblings whose contracts expire in 2025 and our salaries don’t fall behind. Solidarity forever ❤️🔥✊
Btw we changed our logo! Workshopped by BxD union members and our amazing

📰Our fight for a fair contract has been featured in the press since we announced the results of our strike authorization vote earlier this month. Our members have made it clear: we don't want to strike, but we will.
All the articles are linked at
Over the last 2 years, 60% of our membership left
@BronxDefenders
. Attrition this high harms the people we defend, the people of the Bronx, and BxD as a whole. That's why we're fighting for a fair contract.
We know the Bronx deserves better. Why doesn't management agree?
⏳ Our contract expires June 30th, and
@BronxDefenders
management has failed to recognize who really makes BxD run, who really defends the Bronx, and who really cares about the mission of The Bronx Defenders. 🧵(1/3)
⏰The clock's ticking. Our contract expires 6/30 &
@BronxDefenders
has refused to bargain in good faith, proposing salaries lower than any other PD office in NYC and attempting to roll back existing benefits.
📢So join BxD Union Weds. 6/12 for a picket to demand a fair contract!
While
@bronxdefenders
office is falling apart, Management continues to insist on an inflexible in-person policy. The Union has offered a comprehensive deal, including a reasonable telecommuting policy. It’s up to Management what happens next.
⏰ Tick tock...
We also call on our employer
@BronxDefenders
, which claims to be committed to "radically transforming" the "justice system," to end its silence regarding this recent wave of violent arrests of protesters, which even peer organizations have condemned. (2/2)
We were going to live tweet, but mgmt said they wouldn’t bargain with us today if we did! Pretty wild considering we’re 20 days away from contract expiration. Maybe if they don’t want their offensive proposals broadcasted, they should make us better offers. More updates to come.
On July 9, the Joint Council of
@alaa2325
approved a resolution in support of BxD Union workers, calling on ALAA members to honor work-to-rule, advocate to refuse to take struck work, & more. Solidarity forever! ✊❤️🔥
On Friday, BxD staff received an "important update on bargaining" from Management, which mischaracterized their offers and engagement with negotiations.
BxD union siblings!🚨🚨As our contract expiration date approaches, we’ve got several events coming up—check out the calendar here! Looking forward to seeing y’all at an upcoming strike training and at the lunchtime picket! 🪧
"Up until the last minute, management...has not really been taking seriously the fact that the contract was going to expire...It’s forcing us into a position where as much as we don’t want to go on strike...we may need to." Read more @
📣 TODAY! Join us on the corner of 161 and Courtlandt Avenue from 1-2 PM to demand that BxD management bargain fairly and in good faith. Solidarity forever. See you there! ❤️🔥
Three of our Bargaining Committee members—all Bronx natives, representing three different practice areas and roles—appeared on
@PDefenselessPod
to discuss bargaining with
@BronxDefenders
and why we are ready to strike. Give it a listen here:
🚨 BARGAINING UPDATE 🚨 Management came to the table today (after promising a “substantially more equitable salary proposal”) with an offer of a whopping .5% increase from their last offer—still making us the lowest paid PD office in the city by thousands.

✊Solidarity with our comrades
@cmsunion
, whose contract expired the same day as ours! Join them for 2 lunchtime pickets next week as they demand livable wages and a one-year contract!
Our membership has made it very clear: Management cannot intimidate us. Management cannot continue to give us the bare minimum. We are ready to strike.

Instead of focusing on making BxD's crumbling office a safe, sanitary place to work, Management is busy drafting policies that push out parents and caregivers. That's why, this week, we're voting YES in our strike authorization vote!
200 people who refuse to stand by while The Bronx Defenders management offers the worst salary and benefits package in the city (compared to their public defense counterparts).📉 🧵 3/
🚨 New Fundraising Page for Strike Hardship Fund!
Community members who've organized a hardship fund for BxD workers launched a new fundraising page:
With our strike set to begin in just over a week, your solidarity is more important than ever!
Solidarity with our pals at
@ABetterNYLAG
in their fight against management’s oppressive free speech policies in their office. The more they try to silence us, the louder we’ll become!
Today, members took it one step further by filing an Unfair Labor Practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board. As it reads in the statement; “We are committed to fighting this policy until it is retracted in full.” We will not be silenced. 🍉
“The new contract was only the second ever negotiated by the relatively new union—and Espada said members learned a lot from the months of contentious back-and-forth. ‘We’re prepared now more than ever,’ she said.” Read more @

🧵In April of this year, over 7,000 UAW members won a record contract at Daimler Truck that included 25% wage increases, job security, and—for the first time ever—profit sharing and cost-of-living adjustments. Perhaps most importantly, the deal ended wage tiers that had divided
The Office of Court Administration's decision to force Public Defenders & Clients to return to in-person appearances for non-emergency criminal court matters is reckless & dangerous. These matters can easily be handled virtually. Our labor won't be used to support OCA's decision!
Seems like a lot, right? Especially those consultant fees! We compared BxD's spending on consultants to that of LAS and BDS. In 2023:
✔ LAS spent 2% of its expenses on professional services
✔ BDS spent 4% on the same
❓ BxD spent 8% of its expenses on outside consultants (3/5)
We checked BxD's 2023 tax filings and audited financial statements, which showed BxD had the funding to pay:
💰 $3.1 million in total compensation for 15 officers & directors
💰 $4.6 million on "outside consultants" (2/5)
This is not the client-centered holistic defense model BxD claims to have innovated.
We know the Bronx deserves better. Why doesn't Management agree? (4/4)
💰Additional step increases for employees impacted by incarceration, deportation, and family policing systems as well as employees who demonstrate fluency in another language
💰Minimum 3% cost of living adjustment
(🧵3/)
Bargaining comm. put in a request for info about BxD’s finances weeks ago that has been met w/ silence. Mgmt can’t claim they have a wildly different financial situation than other providers and refuse to prove it.
Their explanation so far? “Our budget is what our budget is.”
Last night at the
