@colinbmwhite @KessarisN @ESOTtransplant #ESOTchat As for anyone on the transplant list, individual characteristics will impact on which kidneys offers are suitable and how quickly they are transplanted. In the UK, previous donors will not take priority ahead of patients who are more difficult to transplant.

@colinbmwhite @TheOrganOgress #ESOTchat yes- there tends to be because of the lack of proximity between donor and recipient and it is important be sure that people are appropriately supported if they do not have the usual feedback from the recipient. This may be controversial.

@TheOrganOgress #ESOTchat it varies. In my view it should be when and by whom is most appropriate. It is an integral part of donor assessment but may or may not include a mental health professional, depending upon the individual

@KessarisN #ESOTchat both have a right of autonomy so you could have a discussion with the recipient about the right for the donor to decide to donate and for the recipient to choose not to receive…at some point they will obviously have to reconcile differences

@TheOrganOgress #ESOTchat If the donor has started assessment, support the donor to withdraw and agree how they wish to manage it with their recipient. It is better to say that they are ‘unsuitable’ rather than make up a medical reason in case they wish to donate at a later date

@colinbmwhite @KessarisN @ESOTtransplant No- I think that both can and should be supported to ensure that patients have a range of choices and more people can have the transplant they need at the time that is right for them.#ESOTchat

@KessarisN @ESOTtransplant 4.#ESOTchat It needn’t but it can do. Recipients may make different choices based on availability of organs and sparing their loved ones rather than purely on outcomes. Clinicians may also have different conversations with patients and their families in this context

@KessarisN @ESOTtransplant #ESOTchat I would donate my kidney because the outcomes for the person I love is likely to be better for them and they can plan when they have their transplant. They may avoid dialysis
