“massaging a pre-styled block theme is impossible”
Why is this impossible? Block themes don’t prevent you from creating a bespoke design. In fact, they make design far more accessible because you can do it within the editor, using patterns as a starting point. I can’t speak for
Jamie does a great job of breaking down an otherwise confusing aspect of homepage vs blog display. Still figuring out the best way to tackle this in an elegant way with Ollie!

Right now, we're dedicating a great deal of time contributing content to social media sites. We fill it with content, it goes through algorithms and filters and reaches *some* of our audience.
Our content becomes ephemeral and locked in a system outside of our control.
OpenPress is a design concept that uses WordPress as a decentralized community platform. Your content, coming from your website, connected to your community.
OpenPress turns your site into a micro publishing platform that connects to other community sites.
Currently, it's easy to look at patterns as a simple design feature, one that you might even opt out of.
But patterns are about to get really interesting, and they're going to be a definitive game-changer for WordPress site building.
I'm sure you know about the slash command (using / to add blocks quickly), but did you know about the [[ shortcut to add an internal link?
Simply type [[ and a pop-up will appear where you can quickly select a page and automatically generate and insert a link into your content.
So much knowledge being dropped in this thread from

, by WordPress contributor Carolina Nymark, is another great resource for those looking to dig a little deeper and explore some advanced use cases for blocks and block themes.
Adoption of blocks and full-site editing has been relatively slow considering how large the WordPress ecosystem is.
But from my talks with WordPress creators and agencies, most people are just waiting for the dust to settle.
More here:
One of the flagship features of WordPress’s full-site editing is Global Styles, a settings and style engine powered by a theme.json file.
Although it's still early, theme.json is going to be a complete game changer for WordPress styles and performance.
From my experience interviewing WordPress creators and agency folks, most people are simply waiting for the dust to settle.
These transitions take time, money, resources, and a whole lotta patience to pull off. It’s a lot to ask on top of running a business.
Despite getting fly-over treatment from the wider web community, WordPress has achieved historic growth, powering a massive slice of the web's day-to-day operations.

Yeah, sure. The name isn’t settled at this juncture. It would have to go through due diligence if we started breaking ground on the project.
I chose OpenPress as a nod to the open web, open source, open standards, open data. Social is a part of it, but openness is paramount.

Thanks for your thoughts! This will be aimed largely at users, not agencies. Maybe it will evolve to support a more advanced onboarding, but for now, I’m more interested in driving adoption for average users!
@FloydHartford
Hey Floyd! Do you mean in the editor? If so, I don’t have anything in the theme to hide those. I’m hoping that improvement comes to core this year.
