Lauren Taras expected to spend her Saturday night at a friend’s house, but instead she found herself fending off hundreds of people from her already-flipped-and-destroyed car. Taras' car was one of a handful that were flipped after a party on Chittenden Avenue turned into a riot.
So I about 20 DMs about this rig. Lol
It’s a snorricam rig, but they modified it with a swivel to do a 180 degree turn. The camera is most likely a Red Komoto for weight. There’s a fill light and monitor on top. A motor for the first AC to pull focus. That’s my Ted talk lol
I didn’t know i wanted to be a filmmaker until 2010.
2011 i was rejected from 3 film schools and accepted to 1 which was SCAD
2013 i moved to LA.
2014 graduated SCAD
2014-2020 camera assistant
2021 went full time as a DP
2023 signed to an agency
2024 part time college professor
Ernest Dickerson name needs to be next to spike in this thread. It’s on the cinematographer more than the director on coming up with a way to execute the shot.
Yesterday we had almost every great Black Cinematographers, Camera Assistants, Gaffers, elec, Grips that’s based on LA from every generation in one room in
@SipandSonder
in Inglewood. History was made!
@samshotit
@maddox_dp
2 newer DPs recently hit me up about my prepro process. So I figured I share some of my process publicly. After I receive the creative deck from the director or Agency. I usually make a pdf of my own i call techbooks. To dive into camera and lighting needs with references.
Beyoncé is absolutely the standard for how artist should be professional and take their craft seriously. I’ll never forget during my camera assistant days, a certain rapper was 6 hours late to set. The DP Jackson Hunt who shot all the visuals for Beyoncé’s self titled album
Beyonce is the standard for the artist. Not the festival.
The artist should rehearse.
The artist should be on time.
The artist should give the best show possible.
I Need filmmakers to talk more about their set clothes. Personally I’ve seen my set clothes be converted to more hiking clothes, multi-climate clothes, and cargos.
Just a reminder the in 1967 the Black Panther Party protested at California State Capital with guns. No shots fired, no one injured or hurt. 2 months later a Republican lead Bill was passed that changed the open carry law in California. This Bill was signed by Gov. Ronald Reagan
So.. I will be teaching “intro to cinematography” at Loyola Marymount University this spring. One day a week for 4 hours. This will be a test to see how I manage still being a full time DP and part time professor
Being a freelance filmmaker is a crazy life of streaks. When shit is up, it’s way up. So much work you turning shit down. But shit is down, man it’s down as fuck. Then comes those jobs, you said you were done with or too good for circling back. And your standards change lol
I have a 6 camera shoot next week. 😅 I legit had to make an excel sheet for my camera dept. 16 people! My largest camera dept ever. 5 cam ops, 5 1st ACs, 5 2nd ACs, and a DIT. A legit roster 😂. Also this job is forcing me to enhance my prepro process
10 years in LA, has lead me to incredible moments:
A commercial in Vancouver, Working on Lemonade, Camera operating for Hype Williams, and a commercial Kauai. Just some of the highlights on this journey
Random but if I share some of my Cinematography Decks when I am up for a jobs: my visual understanding of the creative vision. My visual references. And technical suggestions, would yall want to see something like that?
One my mentors Malik Sayeed shot this film. One key story he shared was
The 1st AD asked spike how much film they wanted to dedicate to Ray shooting just in case he misses and spike said he won’t miss so we’re good. Ray Allen never missed a shot on camera unless he was told to.
I think on Monday I’m going to a thread on some of my lighting set ups. Walk you through my prepro processes and break down some frames of the final product. Which one should i do?
If you’re in LA, we’re having a meet up at Sip & Sonder for Black Camera people and techs: Cinematographers, Camera Assistants, Gaffers and Grips. At 1130am today
With a possible 3 way strike happening this summer with WGA, SAG, and DGA. This about to be this best summer ever to expand your network by simply pulling up to one of the picket lines and supporting the cause. Some folks contacts about to make big leaps!
So you want to shoot more creative visuals? Follow the production companies of your favorite music videos or commercials. Companies like pretty bird, freenjoy or love song. Then follow the producers listed to get on their radar.
My first Semester as a college professor is in the books. I learned a lot. I had some really talented students. I appreciate LMU giving me the opportunity.
@gentrifighter
📷 flicked me up in the first photo
The HBO documentary, “Black Art: In the Absence of Light is a good film about Black art for anyone who hasn’t seen it. I’m definitely inspired by all the great Black artists, both past and contemporary.
More unreleased gems. This was an hour long, take Verite style with single source light from above light shot on the Ronin 2 with Alexa mini 35 mm lens super speeds
This cinematography deck was for a feature film that never when into production. The plan was to shoot the entire film in black and white. So i leaned into my personal photography and a film installation for my references

Not to be dramatic but it’s crazy how few music videos are shot by Black DPs currently. Like really crazy because i know some cats that’s nice and should be getting booked for music visuals
One of my favorite things about coming to LA was I immediately saw my power with putting my niggas on. Once I got hired on Glee to Camera PA. I got my boys PA jobs on Glee. I got a call for a Beyonce shoot, the next day I call my bro and tell him to come on!
We as black people need those flowers because we get so lost on being humble at times. Hesitant to speak on our wins because we don’t want to come off as bragging. Those flowers from friends/peers remind you it’s ok to celebrate your wins
Last night i attended We Direct Music Videos Vol. 2 of the Director series featuring Hiro Murai. I thoroughly enjoyed this event. Watching music videos on a movie screen hit way different! It restored the feeling a lot for me.
Calvin Klein’s ad campaign with pgLang and then with Terence Nance have both been truly incredible.
Makes me wonder what kinfolk is over in their marketing department.
OK, I’m going to end the week with Sharing acinematography deck on a multicam (3 cameras) shoot for Netflix strong black lead the series is title “love that for us” s/o to the creative director
@createdby_kara
Hello my name is Domo Jones and I am cinematographer. I just finished revamping my website. I am looking to expand with indie feature world and further grow in the commercial/branded visual space. I also shoot documentaries, fashion films and experimental
Went on a rant about how artists should work as hard as her. He point out that while shooting those visuals for that album she would come to set for 16-18 hrs after doing a concert while touring Europe.
For My filmmakers that shoot on 16mm or 35mm i got a wild story for y’all I was out of town last year on a shoot & I didn’t have a changing tent So i made a makeshift one out of Heavy Duty trash bags and blacking out the house The film came out perfect
@ValDaGrain
was there
For the new balance x footlocker shoot. I was finally able to use the Xenotech Britelite 4K Xenon. I bounced it off a CRLS reflector for both the key and ambient light. I became a big fan of the Xenon from years on set with Malik Sayeed.
American Fiction is a really great film! The cinematography and camera blocking 🤌🏾. Last night i had the honor of sharing the theatrical premiere with DP Cristina Dunlap, some of our camera peers and her friends. I feel so inspired being a part of that moment for her
I constantly say it, Friday should be a film looked at heavy in cinema study! Every character moment was significant. We know every big or small characters lines. And very few locations. Yet the film holds your attention the entire time
I’m reading Ice Cube and DJ Pooh’s script for Friday (1995).
It’s a great read because (1) it’s extremely well written, and (2) it’s fascinating to see what was in the film but not on the page.
For example, Cube and Tucker’s iconic “DAMN!!!!” was here just as
“Aw…man.”
Treat every person on set with respect and value. From the Director to the PAs. The film industry is small. People talk and people don’t forget how you made them feel on set.
Lately my bachelor’s Degree in AutoCAD has become relevant in my film career. Tapping back in my CAD skills to make lighting diagrams or block out a shot has been extremely helpful with my prepro work flow
This deck was for a short film I shot in 2022. The budget was super tiny. Because my personal portfolio didn’t work for references. I used references from movies and Photography I liked.
Some of my favorite screengrabs from the teaser for
@Jidenna
new album

dropping 2/24.
Alexa mini with a anamorphic 44-440mm. I used mirrors and ultra bounce to light the subjects
