Ooookay!! I'm a little late for my 1 year update (5 months late), but here we go! ONE YEAR!! I went out with friends to celebrate and take some photos on the Trans Pride Crosswalk :)
As for actual changes:
Someone shared this on the Kitchener Subreddit. A man in a wheelchair had to get off his chair and use his body to push snow away so that he'd be able to board his bus. Disgusting that we refuse to prevent this.

This scares me. This makes me want to hide and stop being in politics and protect myself.
THIS is why we have Pride. This is why we NEED Pride. It lets me know that I am loved and that the community is on my side, and *that* empowers me not to back down and keep fighting
The attack in a Gender Studies class at
@UWaterloo
is heart-wrenching and chilling.
Students, professors and staff deserve to feel safe and protected.
My thoughts are with those impacted and my gratitude is with the first responders.
I'm disappointed, but not surprised. These systems don't want change, and I presented that. I will continue to fight for that change. Congrats to
@debbiechapman1
on her win, see you in four years (and frequently in between)!
I screamed in excitement when I saw this!! Seeing someone like me in this campaign was genuinely SO exciting. I almost teared up describing it to my wife!
Shame on those responding to progress with hate. Love wins!
I am SO happy to announce that I have been approved as an applicant to seek the ONDP's Kitchener Centre Nomination!
I'm excited to finally get started!!
@marianne_eloise
@DHinrio
I think they were both great, but Ken's writing is what got him the nom. I don't think either were more dedicated or committed than the other, but Ken was just so funny in a big "in your face" way (not to mention the song) that he got more attention. He was just more memeable!
Yesterday marked my 2nd month of being on Estrogen! After 14 months of being ignored by doctors, pushed around waitlists, and constantly fighting for myself, I FINALLY started HRT! 🎉🎉🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️🎉🎉
I'm going to document some of the changes in this 🧵
Honoured to have been chosen as Chair for the
@CityKitchener
Environmental and Climate Change committee! I'm optimistic about what we'll be able to accomplish and advocate for :)
Aaand the news is out! I've applied to one of the WRDSB's empty school board positions! On Wednesday, starting at 5pm, all invited applicants will do a 5-minute presentation to the Board. Then they'll vote!
I've been invited to present after my application was in the top 10 😁
Someone emailed me, asking if I support the Blueprint for Canada platform.
I thanked them for the email and said "No, of course I don't. You know I'm trans, right?" 😂
This news is absolutely heartbreaking. Fred probably saved my life when I was in highschool. He taught me my disability wasn't a glass ceiling, just a different staircase. He made school so much more enjoyable and taught with heart and compassion. We are worse off without him.
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Trustee Fred Meissner. As a Trustee, he advocated passionately for inclusive, accessible and safe classrooms and schools.
To honour his exceptional contributions, flags across the WRDSB will be flown at half-mast.
Extremely honoured to announce that I will be joining
@our_SPECTRUM
's board of directors!! I'm so excited to have this opportunity and am looking forward to continuing my advocacy with them!
Tip to organizations trying to use inclusive language for Women's Day: Try not to say "women and women identifying". It brings a subtle implication that trans women only "identify" as a woman.
I don't identify as a woman, I AM a woman! 😊
I'm going to be taking a short break from being "Brooklin Wallis™️" and just be Brooklin for a little while. The Gender Studies attack accelerated my burnout by about 50000% and I need to use what energy I have finding a job that will let me continue doing this work!
Police are investigating and a letter was issued by Eastwood Collegiate Institute yesterday after a Pride flag was reportedly burned, trampled, and thrown at a group of 2SLGBTQ+ students. The same students also allegedly had rocks thrown at them as they boarded their bus.
CW: Anxiety, assault
I've been having trouble going out to public events ever since the June attack at UW. I've been panicking right before meetings, or events where I was to speak at or help run, because being a public figure means I, or my loved ones, can be targeted.
Just a heads up for y'all; if Kitcher city council decides to have an election for ward 10, I'll be running. I'll have a volunteer form up tomorrow, as well as a lawn sign form!
Thank you so much for voting for me! Nearly 1000 people voted for change; for safer roads, less car dependency, and a housing policy that makes sense.
I won't be giving up on these fights. We need these changes more than ever, and I will keep pushing even if I didn't win.
Some graffiti recently appeared on the building that radicalized me. A school that's been empty for (well over) 20 years.
Why? Because the church next door needs parking spots. 🧵
This landlord is renoviciting all tenants who are paying less than market rates in TWO buildings. Conveniently, the renovations won't seem to affect those who are paying market rates 🤔🤔🤔
Join us on Sunday to show him that we won't take this profiteering sitting down!
Forcibly outting students will just keep kids in the closet longer, or in some cases, will result in an extremely preventable death by suicide.
Parents don't have the right to make their kids scared to be themselves at school.
I'll absolutely continue my work in this community. I won't stop fighting to make our Region better.
These systems are like rock and we are like water; with enough time, we can make canyons.
"But feminist organizations all across Canada, every major feminist organization in this country, recognizes that there is no gender equity without trans women."
“It's not about a universal understanding of womanhood, it's about dismantling the structures of violence and inequity that harm all of us," said Johnstone.
This is why places need renoviction laws; you should be guaranteed temp. shelter and and first refusal at your current rent, and that benefit shouldn't only be given to tenants who put themselves on the line like this!
Proud to announce I have a Red light on the Campaign Life Coalition's website now 😉
If "Anti free speech" means "people have the right to privately seek medical attention" then i guess it applies 🤷♀️
"even calling you trans seems to me a little bit dehumanizing"
You only think that because of your own biases against us.
I am SO. PROUD. to be trans.
When I think about how far I've come, I am filled with JOY. What's dehumanizing about that?
LET'S GOOOOOO
I'm very happy to see the decision! The Judge is absolutely correct, the Region has NOT done enough to morally justify eviction. We need to step up and house these people!
In today's decision, "Justice Valente ruled the region’s bylaw relating to conduct on regionally-owned properties violates unsheltered residents’ rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms to life, security and liberty of the person."
I have not taken much of a position on whether I will be voting Green or NDP this By-election. This is due to me wanting to avoid a conflict of interest; if the NDP wins, as the runner up for Ward 9, it's possible I am appointed City Councillor.
Hi! I'm going through some really hard stuff at the moment, and have been a little withdrawn.
It will likely be a while before I'm back at full capacity, so please bare with me as I spend some time on myself. 💕
This article is essentially a hit-piece on the encampment. Phrasing everything like the unhoused are the problem and that this $80k a month bill is what they've asked for... While complaining that they're blocking a

Had a wonderful time at Take Back the Night! Thank you to Land Back,

, and everyone else who helped with this event! I will always fight for a person's right to be safe, regardless of their job or outfit.
I don't think that most Canadians struggling to buy a home are helped AT ALL by a way to save an extra $8,000 a year, tax free. We need better wages, pharmacare, and a lower cost of living to be able to save anything at all, let alone an extra $8k on-top of an RRSP.
For many, the dream of homeownership feels like it’s moving further out of reach.
That’s why today, we are launching the new Tax-free First Home Savings Account, to help young Canadians and first-time home buyers save up to $40,000 – tax-free!

I strongly disagree with Julia on a lot of things, but she's right that this system is completely falling apart, and that

and
@fordnation
are responsible for it.
Dear

and our entire Provincial Government.
I've written you this video essay—recorded while my child underwent surgery—only after 36 hours of sleep deprivation and social maneuvering to get our healthcare system to pay attention to my daughter's
Just delegated in favour of removing the highway ramps on Lancaster and adding a AAA rated pedestrian lane along Lancaster. I'll be tweeting some more thoughts as the meeting goes on.
Me at the candidate's meeting: I live across the street from Ward 9, spend a lot of time here, and Chapman's voting record is poor on housing
The Record, today: Wallis doesn’t live in the ward, but said she is running in Ward 9 “because of the incumbent’s voting record.”
🙄
Thank you to my volunteer team. Did you know my team consisted of 6 people?
I knocked on ~5000 doors, almost entirely singlehandedly.
I put out ~230 lawn signs and handed out thousands of postcards. I'm SO proud about that sign number!!
Made three different delegations in the last nine days! I'll be posting the videos in the coming days, but for quick reference, here's what they were about:
A lot of the talk about the Lancaster ramp removal hinges on the misguided assumption that roads are the best way for people to move around.
We can hit our growth targets EASILY, while still removing the ramps - we just need to realize that too many cars slow us down.

"[the driver is] charged with [...] causing death while operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated"

Thank you for reading this, if you did. I hope to slowly push my comfort zone back to where it was; I'm judging at the Waterloo Rib Fest this weekend! And I feel excited and not at all uncomfortable about it!
But it'll take time, so be gracious with me. Thanks ❤️💙💜
Acknowledging the fact that the bike grid isn't finished yet, and then still questioning whether or not it's worth it seems... Pointed, to say the least.
I'll be joining CUPE tomorrow, starting at 2 until ~5! The action taken yoday by the Province is a breakdown of a fundamental right that we can't allow to be weakened.
20% is a BLOW though, wow. Nearly 10% less than last year. I don't know what made the difference, maybe the sign law?
I do know this: Municipal elections are too difficult to get into. Over ~30 people are too many platforms to try to identify!
Like I said above, I'll keep this 🧵 updated as I notice changes.
Thanks for reading, especially if you're not trans! We need to make gender affirming care and HRT less scary, and by reading this you've helped make it less "arcane"
Thanks again, and I'll see you next time! 😊
Join us on Thursday for a

@debbiechapman1
!
I hope to see you there!

I am SO upset that this is how the vote ended up. It's infuriating that most of those who are voting to keep the ramps open are the ones who benefit from being able to drive through our community, when those who actually LIVE here are stuck with car-dependant hell.
We're moving into a recorded vote. Those wanting the ramps to close: Redman, Deutschmann, Erb, Huinink, James, Williams, Wolf
Those who want it to stay open: Craig, Foxton, Harris, Liggett, Noack, Solanen, Shantz, Vrbanovic
That's a tie vote so it loses (excuse me while I cry!)
Hey
@_MikeRamsay
, are these the type of people you feel comfortable having a "Followed by" next to? Coming into a thread where I'm telling stories of personal experiences of transphobia and just... being transphobic and rude?
Same question to
@CrisBairosFern
.
"Every call for trans women to be barred from women’s washrooms, every “just asking questions” column about whether youth should have access to gender-affirming care, every claim that gender studies courses are indoctrinating youth, every piece of legislation banning drag(cont)
I wrote about how the Waterloo attack felt inevitable, how every anti-queer + -trans talking points, no matter how "centrist," contributes to a culture where anti-LGBT violence feels increasingly permissible + how activism and education can prevent hate
@JulieSLalonde
Something I wasn't fully prepared for about transitioning was that people are way more annoyed when I stand up for myself. I get way more pushback now than when I presented as a man! It's something I knew about but wasn't ready for the actual experience of!
To see "trans" as a negative descriptor, or to feel like it brings a certain "dehumanization" is a you problem. I see it as an intensely positive, life giving part of me.
Removing that descriptor is what feels dehumanizing to me. It's literally ignoring a part of my humanity.
Maybe spending $10B on a highway to "reduce traffic" (it won't) on the 401 would've been better spent on housing and public transit? Or the $1B you gave back for licence plate registration? Or the $1B in penalties you forgave the 407 for?
Ontario is currently being underfunded $490 million by the federal government for housing and homelessness supports.
We need our municipal partners to stand with us and urge the feds to pay us our fair share, so we can help deliver critical services to our most vulnerable.
@votestretch
and I have organized a Women's Meet-and-greet for the whole region! EVERYONE (Yes, everyone!) is invited, please feel free to come along and meet some awesome ladies!
Tonight
@our_SPECTRUM
will be hosting a Transgender Day of Remembrance vigil on Zoom. I'll be speaking (along with a few other amazing folks) a little about what it means to me.
The All Candidates meeting went so well tonight, excluding the problematic decorum of Robson. Thank you all so much for coming, and a recording will be available in the coming days!
