@Kapur_AK @TheSGEM @CAEP_Docs It's weekly in our adult EDs. Current admits & consults/beds: RUH 46/36, SPH 36/34, and SCH 8/0 (it's closed). JPCH is a peds ED. So we have 84 admits & 6 consults in the 70 open adult ED beds in Saskatoon... This is why we see patients in hallways and waiting rooms.

@Kapur_AK @TheSGEM @CAEP_Docs Just know that it can get so much worse. We regularly have more inpatients/consults than beds in Saskatoon. Currently have 30 admitted and 16 consulted patients in our 36 bed ED with 39 ED patients waiting or being seen by em physicians in -10 beds. 236% capacity. This is common.

@JMeddings This has changed with PGME expansion - particularly in Ontario. We will be at 1.6 spots/Canadian graduate within the next few years.

@AOgieglo The number of residency positions is increasing much faster than Canadian medical graduates (ratio in Ontario will soon be 1.6 spots/CMG). This is going to be much less of an issue for those qualified for residency or practice eligible assessments moving forward.

My term as interim Associate Dean of PGME at @tmu_medicine wraps up today after 16 months - and 16 accredited residency programs! It's been a whirlwind working with @TChanMD and a spectacular group of people. Look forward to contributing further from afar!

@AOgieglo Those reading, please be kind to the ED staff who are working. We (both physicians and nurses) are short staffed, burnt out, and doing everything we can to care for patients in a very challenging environment.

The emergency physician shortage that @CAEP_Docs predicted a decade ago is beginning to hit hard - particularly in western Canada. As the work environment worsens, physicians are cutting back and working elsewhere. Staffing is becoming a huge challenge. Stay safe out there.
