This is the most painful story I've ever written. Calli was a tremendous person and a damn good journalist.
Always enjoyed working alongside her. She represented this area so well.
My heart goes out to her family.
Man 2003-2008 was a great time to be a basketball fan in Metro Detroit:
- Pistons win '04 title, six straight ECFs
- Shock win '03, '06, '08 titles
- Saw The Palace's address change from 2 to 3 to 4 to 5 to 6 Championship Drive
On this day, 17 years ago, (September 16, 2003) Coach Bill Laimbeer and the Detroit Shock won their first WNBA title in front of a sell-out crowd of 22,076.

1. Pistons win emotional game
2. Drummond goes 8-0 vs KAT
3. Taj gets ejected
4. Kelser calls out 97.1
5. Fans pulling up old tweets
Me trying to process all of this:
Fortunate to announce that it's my first day at
@thetimesherald
! I'll be covering prep sports in the Blue Water Area. Very grateful for this opportunity and excited to get to work!
#DetroitBasketball
and
#FearTheDeer
have met up four times in the NBA playoffs:
2006: Pistons win 4-1
2004: Pistons win 4-1
1989: Pistons win 4-0
1976: Pistons win 2-1
I don't think people realize how well Luke Kennard shot the ball last season.
- Spot up: 1.278 PPP, ranked in the 96th percentile.
- Catch and shoot: 1.352 PPP, ranked in the 95th percentile.
- 3-point jumpers: 1.266 PPP, ranked in the 90th percentile, per
@SynergySST
.
From 2000-01 to 2006-07, Ben Wallace:
-12.6 RPG, 2.7 BPG, and 1.6 SPG
- 4x DPOY
- 5x All-NBA
- 6x All-Defensive
- 2x rebounding champ
- Led the NBA in rebounds (13.0) and blocks (3.5) in 2001-02.
- 2004 NBA champion
The last time the
#Pistons
had the No. 1 pick in 1970...
- The draft was held in March
- 239 players were selected (record)
- They played at Cobo
- Fred Zollner still owned the team
- Troy Weaver was 1
I can mention that Andre Drummond led the league in rebounding (again), tripled his assist average, nearly doubled his FT%, was an All Star (again)...
And a certain Detroit radio host would still rather have ALEX LEN??? Is this what Detroit sports fans have become?
I'll always remember Reggie Jackson's first game (as a Piston) at The Palace. I believe it was a Sunday afternoon, and he was so amped for the moment that he got sick on the bench. Would love to see him win a ring.
LeBron James has missed the playoffs twice in his career (2004, 2005). In both years, the
#Pistons
made the NBA Finals. Now, I'm not saying history repeats itself...BUT YOU HAVE TO WONDER 👀
I don't know who needs to hear this, but: the
#Pistons
and their RWB color scheme date back to the franchise's inception in 1941. The club predates the NBA itself. Fred Zollner (the Pistons' founder and original owner) brokered the 1949 NBL and BAA merger in his Fort Wayne home.
Tom Gores has owned the Pistons for 8 years, and not once have they truly "blown it up." And they've had stretches far worse than this. I doubt he'd sign off on any sort of fire sale now.
This is going to sound corny, but whatever: I'll never forget this play. For a brief moment, I felt like a kid again watching my favorite team. No pessimism. No looking ahead. No doubts. Man that night was fun.
A moment of silence was held before the game for Calli Newberry, a Croswell native and local sports journalist who died earlier this month.
Every player has her initials written on their uniform.
The result shouldn't diminish another spectacular performance from Tyler Jamison, in a career that was full of them.
Impossible to overstate the impact he's had on the PHN program and community. An all-time great player, but an even better person.
Huskies lose a tough one 77-80 against Dakota.
T. Jamison 46 pts (6 3’s), 8 reb, 5 assts
A. Jamison 15 pts 5 assts
D. Kasparian 6 pts
C. Harju 5 pts
J. Clark 3 pts
K. Cantrell 2 pts
21-4 and couldn’t be more proud of this group.
Beat writers aren't paid to "believe" in the teams they cover. They're paid to report, write and inform the public. Rod, Vince and James are some of the best at what they do. If you can't see that, then you don't understand the profession.
Joining 7 Mile Dre should be:
- Gratiot Galloway
- Grand Boulevard Kennard
- Jon "Jefferson Avenue" Leuer
- Midtown Bruce Brown
- Wayne "County" Ellington
Why the
#Pistons
should win the Draft Lottery:
- Stan Van Gundy didn't tank
- Fan interest is minimal
- Rule changes in 2004-05
- Phantom foul on Laimbeer
- Please?
"He comes to the rink before anyone is even there. Before anyone's car has even started up."
For PH Northern goalie Logan Sheffer, meticulous preparation has fueled his dominant play:
For the second time in less than a month, Tyler Jamison broke Port Huron Northern's single-game scoring record.
He finished with 59 points and 20 rebounds in a win over Cousino on Tuesday:
FINAL: Marysville 61, Lake Fenton 51
For the first time in program history, the Vikings are regional champions.
Marysville:
Kaitlyn Cain 22 pts
Kara Miller 14 pts
Maddy Smith 12 pts
"My daughters are young. They love coming to the rink now because they want to watch Becca play."
Becca Larson is PH Northern's first female hockey player. And she's making an impact on and off the ice:
Port Huron Northern's Tyler Jamison was named to the AP All-State first team for boys basketball earlier this month.
More on that as well as other area players who were recognized:
Pistons fans: Look at this series as an opportunity for Bruce Brown and Luke Kennard to grow. Sweep or not, these are valuable minutes for young players.
Here's how Jamison scored his 17 points in the second quarter:
- Putback
- Dunk off a steal
- Alley-oop
- Putback
- Catch-and-shoot 3
- Pull-up jumper
- Transition layup
- Dunk off a steal
The NBA eliminated hand checking before the 2004-05 season (which is true), to make it difficult for a team like the 2003-04 Pistons to win a title moving forward (my conspiracy theory).
"He's one of a kind."
After leading three different teams to district titles this season, Jake Townsend puts the finishing touches on a storied career:
