All-Star Jimmy Butler participated in Minnesota's practice, a session that included him verbally challenging teammates, coaches and front office, league sources told ESPN. Butler was vociferous and emotional at times, targeting Thibodeau/Layden/Towns/Wiggins. Story soon on ESPN.
Cade Cunningham out-duels MVP candidate Joel Embiid in leading the league-worst Pistons to a win over the 76ers. Pretty good for the third-best rookie in the NBA, amirite?
I don't know if it means anything — we knew Cade Cunningham had great leadership qualities — but the fact that he, the 20 y/o rookie, was the only Piston trying to calm Stew down says a lot about this roster and more about Cade's future as its alpha.
Tek shot 53% on corner 3s last year.
Tobias shot 40% on corner 3s last year.
THJ shot shot 39% on corner 3s last year.
Ausar Thompson shot the highest percentage of corner 3s for the Pistons last season, and he made 23% of 'em.
Saw some "is this rock bottom?" talk regarding the Pistons. They're there. Since 2021, they have the worst win percentage in major American pro sports, by a lot:
1. Pistons .248
2. Bears .267
3. Nationals .393
4. Blackhawks .395
Cade Cunningham assisted on or scored 15 of the Pistons last 19 points in the final two minutes of the fourth + OT in their 113-110 win over the Hawks.
What. A. Stud.
I don't need the Pistons to make a splash. I just need them to sign two human beings who can shoot 3s at an above average clip. That's not asking much.
I love Jalen Brunson — mostly because I love every Villanova guy in the NBA — but a Pistons' lineup with Brunson, Cade, Bey, Jabari Smith and Stew would be undermanned athletically every time they hit the floor together. That would be problematic.
The Pistons could trade for Dorian Finney-Smith and Andre Drummond right now, give up very little in long-term value, and be tangibly better. Just normal bad. Not historically bad. That's how thin the line is.
Bobi Klintman led all draft picks in 3P% at the LVSL on 6 attempts per game, tied for 8th in assists per game + tied for 4th in rebounds per game.
If he's in the rotation on opening night, whose minutes does that impact most?
I've often said the Pistons had the least on-court swagger and persona in the NBA under Troy Weaver. Maybe that was a reflection of the GM, but they were bad AND boring af.
Guys like Malik Beasley, however, are automatic increasers of vibes:
Rodney Purvis (
@Gpurvooo
) came to Lakeland looking for an NBA chance. He got one with Orlando.
Two strong weeks have turned into a 2-year contract with the Magic.
I love Isaiah Stewart — I really do — but he's not getting any taller nor is he getting any more bouncy. Pistons need to figure out how to stretch his game to the 3-point line or he's destined to be a low-ceiling player.
It's a fake stat, I know, but Cade Cunningham and Killian Hayes combined for 21 potential assists against the Rockets. They finished with 6 real assists. Just goes to show that both are finding teammates for good looks.
Pistons are as close to a perfect tank thus far as we could hope for:
- lose most games, but always competitive to the bitter end
- the few good young players are playing + doing good stuff
- young FA acquisition blossoming into star despite losses
You're not allowed to be irate about the Pistons right now if you didn't suffer through those John Kuester teams in like 2010. That shit was the wooooooorst.
Pistons fans when the team recklessly spends in the opening hours of free agency: "you stupid idiots."
Pistons fans when they don't: "you stupid idiots."
I'm trying my best to keep expectations fair for Jalen Duren this season, but dude was the best center in the AAC and should have been a HS senior. That's still nuts.
All the Pistons need to do is win 19 more games this season for Troy Weaver to stave off Stu Jackson as the worst GM to ever lead an NBA team for 4+ years. Jackson went 78-300 leading the expansion Vancouver Grizzlies while Weaver is 62-185 in his "restoration" of the Pistons.
I like Jaden Ivey. I'd like to keep him around. I also have said a million times on here that the Pistons were eventually going to have to break some eggs to make an omelette — which means trade one of their core four.
The last Pistons playoff game against a team that was not the Cavaliers: Game 6 of the 2008 ECF against the Celtics. After 11 years, that will finally change next week.
Here's a (not) fun fact: Cade Cunningham has never played alongside Jaden Ivey AND Jalen Duren in the same NBA game. Feel like that would be good. Idk.
Tony Bradley and Dwayne Bacon did it last season. Now Corey Sanders, after signing with an agent, hopes to be the next young player from Polk taken in the NBA Draft.
McKeel Academy made it their mission to win the 5A-8 title this season.
Senior Marquan Brinson was chasing more; he was chasing his half-brother, Dwayne Bacon.
Now, both have helped the Wildcats win district titles.
The NBA stepped in and put Jerry Colangelo in the Philly front office when they started 2-21 during Sam Hinkie's last season in charge. Just throwing it out there.
"I'm told after the game last night, Cade Cunningham addressed the team, he's been addressing the team more the last couple of weeks."
@ShamsCharania
on Cade Cunningham and possible trades for the Pistons.
📺:
I don't actually think Miami and Alabama will play for the title -- though it would go like that 2013 game. I kind of want to see Auburn upset Alabama and just throw the entire thing into chaos.
Lot of people this season told me Isaiah Stewart wouldn't see time for anybody outside a bad team like the Pistons. Every team wants an Isaiah Stewart. That's why he's valuable.
I'm a Marcus Sasser guy in a vacuum, but I'm basically penciling him in as a fifth guard in any potential Pistons rotation. Just don't see where he fits on a still-messy roster. I think he's awesome on a good team, though.
You can't go around punching people obviously, but quit clutching your pearls, man. We are the same fans who adore a team that was once literally nicknamed THE BAD BOYS! lol
Saddiq Bey is shooting almost exclusively threes for Atlanta these days because Trae and Dejounte have zero patience for him to do his iso-ball midrange shit down there.
This is interesting. I noticed that NBA LockerVision lists three jerseys for the Pistons, but is missing their second alternate -- the "City" jerseys. The first time they're scheduled to wear that *new* jersey?
November 5 against Brooklyn in Detroit.
IMO, this is the result of a fanbase whose younger/newer generation has never experienced what it's like to be a good, functioning franchise. Patience is hard when you don't know what good is/improvement is linear, so when guys aren't stars quick they "suck."
I’ve been a Pistons fan for 13+ years.
Isaiah Stewart and Killian Hayes are the first players I’ve ever witnessed other Pistons fans hate getting better and have more fun seeing them struggle and have bad games. Ass backwards.
Surprised Minnesota went with Jarrett Culver over Coby White. You can never have too many long wings, though. How long till Culver is better than Wiggins? A year?
Feels like I was in the minority on this, but I thought Trey Lyles was a nice piece. He'll help the Kings. Same with White Donte. Sacto low-key got a good haul for Bagley with those two + the expiring Jackson deal.
It's weird that all the commentary around the Tobias Harris signing frames him as being this me-first player who just wants to show how he can score. I've watched him for like a decade and have never thought of him as a selfish, gimme-the-ball-and-get-the-hell-out-of-my-way guy.
Nickell Robey-Coleman's mother, Maxine Robey, died in 2010. He signed a $16 million contract with
@RamsNFL
with her on his mind back home in Frostproof today.
This Pistons fanbase is so diluted by tanking that many don't even see the value in a win. Tonight is the kind of effort, even in a tanking season, where you want them to win because they would have earned it.
When it comes to trading for stars, the Pistons actually did pretty well with Blake Griffin. Admittedly, he's no PG/Kawhi/Brow, but they gave up one good player and one first round pick to get him, essentially.
It's kind of becoming a trend that when things go bad for Mel Tucker's MSU, they go REALLY bad. Hasn't happened a lot, but these dudes TILT easy sometimes.
Seeing Braxton Key in person tonight was fun. Dude plays hard, knows how to play D, doesn't try too much outside his skillset on O. He's good enough to keep around and see what happens as a reserve prospect this summer for sure.
