Questioning the respect that players at the U18C ice hockey level have for referees nowadays after tonight. It doesn't matter what sport you play as a youth. You should be taught to respect the officials in your games. I referee higher levels of hockey. But U18C is an easy skate for me and $58 for the efforts. But tonight was a weird one. 1 player from light team holds a player from dark team. Dark team players shoves light player, then trips light player after. Light team was up 4-0 in the 3rd period with 12 mins left. So I decided to call both players, but light team was getting a powerplay out of it. The light player acts like they did nothing wrong and is shocked they are getting a penalty. As they are 20 feet from penalty box, I knew the player was pissed. So I simply say "Hey! Calm down, your team is getting a powerplay!" Normally, that should shut any angry hockey player up in that situation. Well, not this kid. Gets into the penalty box as I'm reporting the calls to the scorekeeper, and slams the penalty box door shut. In my head I think "Are you fucking serious bro?" I then blow my whistle and tell the kid "You're done! Go home!" He then waves his arms in the air, takes one step on to the ice, looks me in the eyes and says "Fuck you!" Meanwhile all I'm thinking is "Dude, you originally just had to sit for 2 minutes, while your team was on the powerplay, and you're already winning 4-0. Like what the fuck yo?" 🤦‍♂️ Not going to say what I called. But it makes you wonder about how some parents raise their children nowadays... Not saying I made this call, but Abuse of Official penalties are taken very seriously. I could essentially get the player suspended for multiple games in this exact situation.
