I’m talking about applied math here. The biggest reason to go to grad school was to be surrounded by people at the cutting edge. But now, the most interesting applications of math seem to be happening outside universities—probably because universities have become too risk-averse, which has been worrying me for a while. I would be lying to myself if I didn’t admit that one reason I wanted to attend grad school was precisely because it’s difficult. You could even think of it as creating a kind of technical moat for yourself. But given the recent math IMO benchmarks coming out of AI labs, it seems risky to assume traditional education will remain the best way to learn and apply knowledge. I’m also very sympathetic to the idea that social capital is about to rebalance in a way that lets the “word people” regain some footing. And doesn’t that say something about the future—where being a polymath might be more valuable than having a hyper-focused expertise in just a few technical areas?
