Be very picky about who you play with, and try to find out if any new names are known for trolling or haven't battled at all. Usually if they approach as turbo bratty and demanding to start without any discussions first, that means they just want a milking.

There are variants that make the game depend more on number values like health, etc. Off the top of my head, I'd think of something tied to a points system.

Yeah it's mostly that. I've had people shocked to see I treat them well after a session. When, as a sub, all you've seen of dominant play is stuff like this, you perceive it as normal. Meaning they've never met someone being nice to them.
