@SCH890 this is a meteorologist's first response, and exactly what I told Ryan when he first proposed it to me. Days 1-3 will mirror what you and I want when using WSSI as input, since that product accounts for elevation.

@mchesterfield26 1 is done immeasurably often and results in a "it was wrong by this much" answer, or a consumer's biased approach like "it's always wrong" 2—this USES WSSI's impact based forecast to produce probabilities of REACHING those impacts based on guidance (ensemble & otherwise).

@RoncaHohn I think it will verify similarly to SPC outlooks with hits/misses, even with the greater dependency on sfc instead of low-mid level profile. Your question is pointed to if we expand this to have specific outlooks like "fzra risk, blizzard risk" which I think will suffer more, yes

@Jaxon_WX this more closely parallels the existing WSSI (winter storm severity index) from the WPC, talking about impacts in particular rather than probability of meeting impact thresholds

@amarkowitzWX @ryanhallyall it's definitely rudimentary for now, and I don't actually know what the criteria are for the risk levels but I imagine days 1-3 parallel the severity presented in the WSSI product. Days 4-7 will be more basic, probably only relying on a specific measured amount of winter prcp

Some of the best video of a Japan waterspout I've ever seen, coming onshore in the Fukui prefecture from the Sea of Japan. Can see the cloud structure of the base of the storm!

@Rob_Mahar07 @ryanhallyall Strong winds can cause electrical infrastructure to spark. Where there's none of that, there's a chance of it happening naturally with dry brush friction caused by those strong winds

@NickKrasz_Wx While the profile doesn't support it there in the western peninsula, you can have convective snow showers from cumuli clouds dropping anywhere from small to big flakes easily in the mid 40s °F. I've personally observed large flakes at 47 °F!

@ChrisMartzWX This post wasn't so popular with your audience was it? It's absolutely correct, and yet people don't seem to want to listen.
