The United States is Alberta's biggest trading partner, not just for oil, but across a wide array of goods and industries. Following the announcement of the 30-day tariff reprieve, @awlegge spoke with @CBCNews about the devastating effect tariffs could have in Alberta if a solution is not found: "Adam Legge, president of the Business Council of Alberta, said while a lower tariff on energy exports was preferable to the 25 per cent levy, it would still pose a challenge to Alberta. And, though much of the conversation in the province in recent days has revolved around impacts of the tariffs on the energy industry, Alberta's farms, factories and plants would also be in trouble if disagreements continue. Businesses in the province that are large exporters to the U.S., including those in the agricultural, manufacturing and petrochemical sectors, would still be hit with 'crippling' 25 per cent tariffs." The Business Council of Alberta is pleased to see that Canada has negotiated a 30-day delay in the implementation of U.S. tariffs. This is good news for hundreds of thousands of Canadian families who will sleep a little easier, at least for a few nights. But the work isnât over. Free trade must remain the priority, and Canada cannot let off the gas on improving our own internal issues like interprovincial trade, infrastructure approvals, and investment conditions. BCA's latest EconMinute is here!: Young Canadians Are Leaving HospitalityâWhere Are They Going? For decades, it was common for young people to work in restaurants, cafes, and fast-food chains. These hospitality jobs were often their first venture into the working world. But things are changing, and there are nearly 90,000 fewer jobs among 15-24 year olds compared to just five years earlier. BCA's latest EconMinute dives into the employment rate of various age demographics and analyzes economic factors and industry trends to identify what is causing fewer and fewer young people in Canada to be employed. Alberta business council working overtime in Washington as tariffs loom: BCA President @awlegge joined @GlobalCalgary's morning show to break down his meetings in Washington D.C. with U.S. partners during President Trump's inauguration, and to re-emphasize that BCA wants to see Canada take "a measured approach" and not "a knee-jerk reaction" to any impending tariffs that may be implemented. #abpoli #cdnpoli #TRUMP

The Council raised concerns about disruptions in critical economic infrastructure, labour training funding, and the federal approach to US Trade negotiation. Our messages to the minister: Plan A is a diplomatic approach to protect free trade; address the known irritants of the Trump administration; any retaliation must be done thoughtfully and without disproportionate damage to any region or industry; and Canada needs to take this as a wake-up call to do better domestically.

BCA's latest EconMinute is here!: Canadiansâ wages are stunted by low productivityâeven for the most highly educated We often hear about how Canada is falling behind the U.S. on things like economic growth and productivity. But what does this mean for the typical Canadian? Based on the latest data, Canadians at all levels of education earn on average less than Americans with the same qualifications. This week's EconMinute dives into the factors that help explain this divergence in incomes, and what Canadians could do to start earning as much as their American neighbours. Adam Legge joined CBC/Radio-Canada's West of Centre podcast to talk tariffs and a trade war with the United States, where he highlighted that retaliatory tariffs isn't the 'Trump' card some may think it is: "It would harm affordability in Canada. It would result in some inflationary outcomes, and we're all trying to get the overnight rate for the Bank of Canada to go even lower, as opposed to pausing or going back up because of inflation. So we just don't have the heft that would deliver a blow that they would sit up and take notice." Full episode: #abpoli #cdnpoli #TrumpTariffs #WestofCentre

Speaking with Cindy Tran at Edmonton Journal, BCA President Adam Legge emphasized that not only Canadians, but many U.S. businesses and consumers, oppose the idea of restrictive tariffs and the damaging effects they would have on both sides of the border: "Legge was in Washington, D.C., for Trumpâs inauguration and spoke with U.S. stakeholders to highlight the potential for severe economic impacts including job losses and a decline in GDP if the tariffs were imposed, which would have a 'devastating' impact. He said a strategic approach is necessary to preserve trade relations and agreed with Smith saying diplomacy is necessary â not retaliatory tariffs."
